Cat castration [shock] any advice?!

bossybritches · 21/11/2007 07:01

My two male cats are being "done" on Saturday (11 mnths old & big) Both my dogs were quite spaced out & wobbly after they were done but basically stayed in their beds & 24 hours later were fine, if a bit subdued ( naturally) for a few days. I have a big cage we can use.

Just wondered if anyone with cats had any tips on this?

Thanks!

Hiya,
My eldest cat was castrated last year. They kept him at the vets for a couple of hours after the op to ensure that he had recovered and then I brought him home. He hated the journey (even though it was only down the road) but he was himself by the end of the day. There are no stitches to worry about and the cats won't need any of those daft plastic collars so apart from them being a tad peed off about being taken to the vets and travelling in the nasty cage you shouldn't have any proplems with them.
If your cats do seem a bit down afterwards just give them lots of love and a few treats and they will bounce back.
I would take them in separate cages though as they get really irritable and worried in the cages and could start fighting with each other

Indoors overnight for one night at least post op, nice beds for them to curl up in if they feel like it. Light diet for a couple of days - a bit or fresh cooked chicken or white fish perhaps. Basically let them do their own thing and they will probably surprise you by how well they are the day after.
They do sometimes have the buster collars afterwards though - depends upon the cat and their wish to lick really. If they are licky cats then they may still need to wear them even though the boys will not have any external sutures present. Most of them do not need them however.

we really had no problems when we had ours done. The licked a bit but I think the soreness prob puts them off, and they did bounce back really quickly. Just so long as they have somewhere quiet to sleep it off when they get home they will be fine.

mine is being done on fri, so this is interesting

lou33 · 21/11/2007 10:06

i do wonder if he will be traumatised by having no balls to lick tho

he will hate me i assume

NomDePlume · 21/11/2007 10:35

I had my kitten (23wks) done last Friday. He was in for 4 hours and was a bit wobbly on his feet after the GA but otherwise he has made a brilliant recovery.

TigerFeet · 21/11/2007 10:47

My cat recovered from his really quickly. In fact he escaped from his box on the way home and was running around inside the car

His temperament was much better after the snip, he was getting nasty but he is a wonderful moggy now.

lou33 · 21/11/2007 10:48

see my cat is a real sweetheart, he is very gentle, i worry he will hold it against me afterwards lolo

bossybritches · 21/11/2007 10:54

Aww thanks everyone. They are both such lovely (not-so) little things, very affectionate & quite independant, so will HATE being confined indoors. Thy have a litter tray for ngiht times after a few accidents but only use it for a pee if desperate & NEVER to poo. I did think about putting some earth in instead of litter or would that confuse them?

PK-oops never thought of that! It's a huge cage (small dog size) as I deliberately got a big one to bring them home in & live in whilst they got used to us & the dogs. Should still be big enough for them to both lie down comfortably....however I can see them evicting the dogs from their beds & claming squatters rights as they usually do.

Lou33 we can compare post-op notes!!

Does your boy smell of tom-cats now? Ours have justed started being wiffy- not sure if that really goes away?

My cat was 'done' about a month ago. He was fine when I picked him up, not sleepy or wobbly. He took to his bed though, for couple of hours, and then started tearing around the house like a maniac. After an hour of this he then started attacking his water bowl, splashing water everywhere with his paw. He got soaked, water all up the fridge, all over the floor . I was concerned as I thought maybe he was in pain, and the odd behaviour was a result of this. Once I'd cleaned it all up and refilled his bowl we had another splashing session, then he slept all night and has been back to normal ever since.

I think all cats will react differently. The vet said that I should watch out for "swelling and discharge" but we thankfully had none of either.

lou33 · 21/11/2007 11:04

he doesnt, but then he has always gone to the loo outside not in a tray, although the other night i locked him in too early and didnt hear him wanting to go out, so he peed on the kitchen floor which really whiffed

lou33 · 23/11/2007 09:20

well i just dropped him to the vet

what a pain getting him in his basket!

bossybritches · 23/11/2007 09:24

They just KNOW don't they little buggers?!!

We have to have both of ours starved frorm 10 tonight & in by nine tomorrow. They usually get fed first thing so I'll probably be down there at 8 as they'll be wowing & starving hungry!!

Let us know how he got on!

OP posts:
lou33 · 23/11/2007 09:27

mine wasnt allowed any food from 8pm , and had to be kept in overnight

no water from about 7.45 this morning

little bugger knows what that pet carrier is for now and was doing his utmost to get out

i had to chuck a towel and a nearby jumper (one of mine ) over him and rugby tackle him into the bag

bossybritches · 23/11/2007 12:00

Gawd that'll be me tomorrow!

i had my male cat (and female) cat done and i personally think they recover quicker than dogs (had one of my male dogs done too!). i do not even think my cat had to wear a collar thing that looks like a lamo shade! it was that or him spraying all overthe house! though he still tries it on with my female neutered cat!

lou33 · 23/11/2007 14:33

no i havent heard anything, i should call them really

lou33 · 23/11/2007 14:36

he's up and about, no collar, leaving his wound alone, collecting him at 5.20

lou33 · 23/11/2007 17:47

well, he started trying to rub against dd2 , through the carrier ,when he saw her in the vet, and when we got home he sprang out of it and tried to get out to the garden lol

he doesnt seem to be in any pain but then he has had painkillers and antibiotics

he has wolfed down some of the food they gave me, and seems fine, tho i have told the kids to leave him alone

he has to stay in til at least tomorrow afternoon, and he has no lampshade round his head, they will only do that if he licks the wound too often

but he seems right as rain really

bossybritches · 23/11/2007 18:56
