How often does your dog poo ?!

silversparkler · 02/11/2007 10:30

Our (nearly 2 yr old) collie tends to have a poo about 4 or 5 or even 6 times a day. He only has one meal in the evening, so it just seems so excessive! He hardly has any treats (2 or 3 biscuits when we leave him but that is not every day) and has dry 'complete' dog food. We give him the recommended amount, we even weighed it to make sure. Our previous dog just poo-ed twice a day.
Is he normal??!

wow it sounds alot, has he always been this, um, frequent? does he seem well in all other respects - active, good appetite, healthy weight?

Ilovenutella · 02/11/2007 10:38

sounds a lot - but how much are you feeding him as the recommended amounts on food bags are often too much... We have a large dog who has half can of meat and half can of biscuits morning & evening and he does 3 poos a day......

ska · 02/11/2007 10:39

2 times aday. have you aksed the vet about it? seems a lot to me

silversparkler · 02/11/2007 10:46

He has always been like this, though obviously when he was having more meals per day when he was younger, we thought that was normal.
He is super fit, healthy weight, glossy coat. Just wondered if other dogs were similar, just as humans have different patterns (!).

My dog used to poo for england - if its not nasty poo (ok all poo is nasty but you know what I mean) then I wouldn't worry.

My friend came to stay with her two mutts this summer and after two days she poo-picked the garden and found 21 poos.

coby · 02/11/2007 10:47

When money was tight and I put my two onto a cheaper feed it would increase their pooing frequency but quite a bit. Considering one was a Great Dane and the other Great Dane x Ridgeback this was a bit of a problem .

It wasn't a problem with all cheaper dry foods, just some of them. I put it down to the foods being bulked up with fillers etc.

Not suggessting you feed your pooch cheap food but maybe a gradual change to a different brand might help. If not I'd maybe ask the vet as sometimes this problem can be down to behavioural issues.

ExplosiveScienceT · 02/11/2007 10:47

Cocker spaniel - twice a day.

silversparkler · 02/11/2007 10:56

Thanks for all comments (hope noone is still eating breakfast!!)
We give him Tesco/Asda dry complete food as that is what he was eating when we got him from the farm. I used to feed my previous dog vitalin, mixed with some tin or meat/fish. So I was never totally happy just giving him the same old, same old, every day. He wolfs it down so doesn't seem to care!
Maybe slowly trying different brands may help. Could experiment!

Look at the fibre content of the food. The higher the figure the more they poo. Hunt for different diets with less fibre.

Threadworm · 02/11/2007 12:21

That does seem excessive. I'd change the food.
(Just to lower the tone even further, my dog had an embarassing bottom situation this morning, due to having eaten Ds's sock last night. Sock-remains made partial exit, and needed human assistance to make it all the way out. Dog completely mortified.)

GoodGollyMissMolly · 02/11/2007 14:30

Both of mine tend to go about 4 times a day each (Dh has a lot of scooping to do , I told him the the MW said I'm not alowed to poop a scoop while pg or bf )

Both of mine now have two meals a day and a carrot each (They love raw carrots ) they are both healthy.
I suppose as humans are all different, so are our pets!!

MaryBleedinPopPopBANGins · 02/11/2007 14:34

My Cairn Terrier is on a good quality dry dogfood (either Eukanuba or Hills Science) and she poos 4 or 5 times a day too. Nothing yucky about them though and she's in perfect health so I don't worry.

I'm just grateful that they're smaller than the ones my lab used to do!

Just like humans, some are more prolific pooers than others.

Ilovenutella · 02/11/2007 17:35

goodgolly - my dog loves carrots too - salivates madly when I am peeling them in the kitchen!

Threadworm - never had a sock episode but have had 'dangleberries' where dog absolutely frets - it's hysterical (apart from the cleaning up bit!)

tigerschick · 02/11/2007 17:56

We have 2 collies, one is 6 mo and the other is nearly 3. Like yours they have one meal in the evening. They both 'go' about 4-5 times a day. That's a lot of scooping!
They are both fit and well in every sense so I'm not at all worried.

silversparkler · 03/11/2007 18:01

May be a collie thing then!
Threadworm....that sock episode.....hilarious!!!!

My dog loves root veggies too. Thought it was just her. She went crazy when I was peeling veg for a stew last night. She also likes melon, rinds and all.

She has three meals a day plus a bonio at bedtime and poos 2 or three times a day.

(By three meals a day, I mean I split the appropriate amount for her size, age and breed between three meals, not that my dog is a big fat knacker. Obv.)

hippipoPANDBANGami · 03/11/2007 18:26

Cocker Spaniel, twice a day - morning and afternoon.

Dh makes balloon models in his spare time, modelling balloons are long and thin, and every now and then one half hangs out of dogs bum and needs to be pulled out! Cue dog running in circles trying to get to that long dangling thing behind him [extremely grim emoticon]

silversparkler · 03/11/2007 18:29

LOL Hippi!!!

Ours is another champion dumper - several a day. Given up counting exactly. Always has. I think in part it may be down to individual constitution - his father didn't make nearly so much mess.

Wonder if the odd taste thing is significant - he loves raw carrots as well. I don't routinely give them to him, but he does like them. And will beg for melon rinds too.
Mind you the only thing he has refused so far is raw onion.

But what about tissues? I can't leave tissues boxes in range or he eats them too - the tissues I mean. And will have a go at bits of paper in general.
I never did tell dh about the fiver he poohed out. It had obviously been left where it shouldn't have been and got snaffled.

And no, I didn't retrieve it......

hippipoPANDBANGami · 03/11/2007 21:32

Dill (our dog) has also done the tissue thing. When he was a pup I once sat in horror as he devoured a fat slug [shudder], and he used to have a liking for dd's colouring pencils (only the coloured inside, he would strip off the wooden outer and discard it), that resulted in very interesting poo - all the colours of the rainbow, for several days

I have noticed that the number of poo's done varies with what he is fed. Currently he is on a good quality dried food, this results in two firm poos a day. But for a while he was on an equally good quality tinned food which caused 3 or 4 poos a day of sloppier consistency.

pointydog · 03/11/2007 21:45

what a fantastic thread title!

haychee · 03/11/2007 21:47

Mine has eaten 30 balloons! Very colourful for the next couple of days!

4 times a day approx.

MALO · 03/11/2007 21:53

My two dogs have a home cooked diet - fish/chicken/fresh veg/rice/pasta/boiled egg with a dog vitamin tablet and they poo once a day.

I have to cook them a home diet because the eldest (12yrs old) has never been able to stomach dog food/biscuits (gives her diarrhoea) and the younger dog has the same diet just to make life easier.

When I first got the younger dog she was eating dog food and she'd poo up to 6 times a day - it was considered normal by the vet.

tillykins · 03/11/2007 21:54

border collie x labrador here and she goes once or twice a day
Sainsburys complete is very very good - she is pretty picky but she does like that (and the cat likes their own brand too)
She once had string hanging out of her bum and was running round the garden in a right tizz
DH finally got her, and with a bit of kitchen roll, grabbed the string - which just kept coming

MALO · 03/11/2007 21:57

tilly - your dog was lucky to pass that string without damaging her insides!
