Royal Python has escaped!

Belvedeer · 04/01/2021 10:00

My daughter’s royal python escaped on New Year’s Eve and is still missing. I followed tips online to search room by room and then sealing the door off if she’s not in there but can’t find her anywhere! I’ve literally ransacked the place, every piece of clothing has been removed and checked even the hanging clothes, every drawer has been removed, I even pulled the fridge freezer out and took the plinths off in the kitchen! We’ve left her viv door open with a mouse inside, tried leaving a hot water bottle with hide on the top next to a mouse at night but still no sign. Does anyone have any other tips of what we can do? I have a distraught 8 year old on my hands!

And it’s very unlikely a ball python would leave the house during winter, they don’t like the cold and will stay where it’s warm.

Lovemusic33 · 05/01/2021 12:54

Guessing OP's snake is about this size so hardly capable of eating a child.

@Lovemusic33 I'm picturing a reptile (honestly, I'm picturing pascal from tangled) chasing a postie down the street hahahaha!!!!

BeyondThunderdome · 05/01/2021 12:59

From best guess, OPs python is about this big at the most. Not likely to eat cats, never mind people.

BoobyBetty22 · 05/01/2021 13:01

Against the law because I don’t think it’s right to keep them in tanks
Not do I think it’s right to keep rodents locked up in tanks - nothing to do with if they are dangerous or not

BeyondThunderdome · 05/01/2021 13:02

Love, she is beautiful! 😍

@BeyondThunderdome

Love, she is beautiful! 😍
He’s my shy boy, he only comes out for dd, I don’t think he likes me, I have another that’s much bigger but still not fully grown, he’s really friendly and asks to come out to play. They are great pets for kids they really are, both of mine handle them but neither of them will handle the evil hamster 😂
OohImBlindedByTheLights · 05/01/2021 13:06

@BoobyBetty22 so should it be against the law to keep rabbits and guinea pigs in hutches, horses in fields, cats indoors, birds in cages, Chickens (free range) in wide open pens? Hmm

Lovemusic33 · 05/01/2021 13:09

This ones my favourite, loves being handled. Hoping to use him as a therapy animal for children with sn's (when covid has gone). We have several other weird pets too, its a bit like a zoo here at the moment but they help the dad's with lockdown and calming them for homeschooling.

What a beautiful snake is this yours?

Our pastel is a little smaller than that and she’s only just moved up to an xl mouse so a child might be a bit too big for her just yet Grin

Well this thread has gone in a direction I wasn’t expecting, I don’t think I’ll be able to look at a rat again without thinking about it with a chick hat and wondering whether it’s had a blow dry Smile.

She is our first snake after being nagged by the 8 year old for a reptile, I didn’t want live feed so we opted for a snake. Ive never minded them but my partner hated them but even he was warming to her. They are great pets, very low maintenance and royal pythons are pretty docile by nature so very unlikely to attack anyone. She still hasn’t turned up so we’re all quite sad, this thread has really cheered me up!

Will let you know when we find her, hoping it’s not in 6 months time!

She’s exactly that size also with very similar markings but she’s a pastel het ghost so a bit paler. You have a beautiful snake!

Horse penis sleeve? What the merry heck?

SoupDragon · 05/01/2021 13:19

Oh dear god... this thread just keeps giving!

Blow dried rat, chick hats, a rogue tortoise penis, excitable horse... 😂😂😂

BeyondThunderdome · 05/01/2021 13:19

Thank you bel, she's a bit bigger now though. She's my third royal but the first that my kids are helping with, which makes me very nervous! 😬

This is her now...

Love, he is gorgeous too! My first female used to have patterns up her sides that were so identical to one another that they looked like rows of skulls. Don't think I have any decent pictures though - before the days of camera phones 😄

We also have two ackie monitor lizards. They need live feeding, so we have a colony of roaches that are technically our "pets" too 😂😂

Hahaha, the thread that keeps on giving.

I'd pay good money to watch a gecko chasing my postman Grin

Fckingfuming · 05/01/2021 13:38

@Sexnotgender I've not tried the chick/rat hat combo. I did think about a rat wearing a chick cape/costume though, jeez it's all sounding a bit 'Silence of the lambs'Grin

Love the snakes on here, it's true about the adults not being big enough to kill you, so don't worry!

For anyone who has a phobia (if you can stomach watching on a screen) and wants to desensitise to snakes, watch Chris Hardwicks channel on Youtube. He wears one of his snakes 'Bobby' the royal/ball python around his neck when hes talking about his ballsGrin. He's the loveliest, most placid snake you'll see. I watched his channel (and lots of others) many times before going into the hobby with my 5 pythons!

This is Coco, who thinks shes above any delicacies offeredConfused

We ended up having to get a viv lock for our corn snake who is an amazing escape artist. The first time she escaped we found her coiled up under DD2's pillows on her bed.

Hope you find the snake soon.

ChristingleAlltheWay · 05/01/2021 14:08

My corn escaped a couple of months ago as the glass door of the viv fell in overnight. She obviously had a great time exploring the house if my cat's behavior was anything to go by (both me and DP saw her intently watching something in different rooms but assumed she'd brought in a mouse until we realized the snake was loose)! We finally heard get in the bedroom that evening having knocked something off the bookcase and I managed to retrieve her. Viv now firmly glued together so we can't have a repeat performance.

Don't think anyone has mentioned the bottle trick yet (assuming she's still small enough to get into a bottle): put a mouse in an empty bottle and leave next to a wall. The idea is that she'll go in, easy the mouse then be too big to get back out. Good luck!

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 05/01/2021 14:23

Oh, THATs a good idea, Christingle!

How do you get them out the bottle, though?

Put it in the viv and wait til they are thin enough to get out again? Like Winnie the Pooh?

ArtichokeAardvark · 05/01/2021 14:29

I really wanted this thread to be about a snake on the loose in Buckingham Palace... had visions of a python guarding the Crown Jewels Grin

kitkat463 · 05/01/2021 14:47

Be careful of your radiator temperatures. Our Royal escaped by pressing the glass hard again the vivarium lock so it cracked, then slid the door open ( we watched her slide door open at a later date hence we know how she did it!) she went between the coils of the radiator and got burnt! Ps you said you were off to get a heat mat, apologies if I'm wrong but did that mean you dunt have a great mat in the viv? Pythons need a heat source at one end of their enclosure in u. K( apologies if you know this but just in case anyone else reading is thinking they don't need heat)

FraggleShingleBellRock · 05/01/2021 14:55

@GwendolineWindowlene

The sleeve is to collect the semen. Depending on how high tech the facility is, sometimes they have a fake horse with a Vaginal style opening to collect semen is then sold on . Sometimes at ridiculously high prices If the horse has a good race record of very desirable traits.

I attach photos for your perusal.

And as we are doing photos here are some of mine from years ago. They are mostly royal pythons of various Types but the very skinny string like snakes with giant heads are egg eating snakes. I used to breed them all. The snake with me is a really good sized female royal and at the top end of the scale for size and weight.

Wardrobes123 · 05/01/2021 15:20

I think this has become my new favourite thread! i don't own a snake but am now very curious about it and I love the posts of @FraggleShingleBellRock - so knowledgeable, even if it is in a slightly morbid way
