we got a new kittne on monday

13 weeks old

she is toilet trained - we were told

is it normal for a kitten in a new house to do poo/wee outside of her litter tray?

she has done all these in litter tray apart from first ever wee in the house and a poo just now in the corner (shes done 3 poos in the litter tray previous to this)

how do i deal with this?

thanks

is it because uyou aren't changing the litter often enough. She can still smell the 'old' poo so doesn't want to use the same spot again ??

nailpolish · 05/10/2007 16:46

sigh
im trying really hard to keep it clean and fresh. its a full time job just now though! i dont know where its all coming from! is 6 poos a day normal?
i cant wiat til january when she can go outside

seems a lot of poos to me nailpolish. My cats have only ever done two a day.

Can you phone the shelter for their advice?

It is probably down to stress although it is hard to get them to stop once they have started. It's odd that she only does it sometimes.

What sort of litter are you using by the way? I always found the wooden pellet stuff to be the nicest smelling, but it does tend to get trailed over the house

nailpolish · 05/10/2007 16:47

they were using tesco premium wood based at the shelter so i bought that
i dont like it much though, it turns to porridge with the wee

ill maybe give it a few more days and see if she settles

it's the most environmentally friendly stuff out there.

The clumping stuff, like catsan is good but it's eco credentials are suspect.

nailpolish · 05/10/2007 17:09

what do yo do with it daisy? can it go on the compost heap?

OP posts:

I used to flush it away as I lived in a flat with no garden. I think it will be OK on the compost heap if you make sure you get all the cat poo out , but I'm not a compost expert.....maybe ask on the gardening threads.

We put our gerbils used sawdust in our compost bin, but gerbil poo is less nasty than cat poo.

Hi

Sorry if this is repeating stuff.

Our annoying cat did the same thing. She would poo over the edge of the tray, but wee in the tray. We were using catsan litter and I changed it to Sainsbury's own (which is a smaller grain) and problem 1 solved - all poo now in litter tray.

Problem 2 - smelly poos - only feed dry food to minimise smell.

Problem 3 - Hate the litter tray. Randomly left it outside one evening and got up in the morning and she was waiting at the door to go out. This was a week ago. I decided to see what would happen if I took it away and lo and behold she just started to go outside.

Good Luck. Cat's are crazed.
