CAT PEOPLE some questions

nailpolish · 03/10/2007 15:36

we got a new kittne on monday

13 weeks old

she is toilet trained - we were told

is it normal for a kitten in a new house to do poo/wee outside of her litter tray?

she has done all these in litter tray apart from first ever wee in the house and a poo just now in the corner (shes done 3 poos in the litter tray previous to this)

how do i deal with this?

thanks

cats are hardly any work - you just have to feed them occasionally and de-flea and de-worm them once in a while.

The only problem with having cats that I have found is getting someone prepared to look after them if we went away (my cats were never prepared to go to a cattery - they ran away rather than willingly got in the carry box!)

daisy

siberian cats are non-allergy
they dont have the that causes allergies

its a fact!

tell dh!

ooohhhh sweet, I want one

We live near a fairly busy road (with a tempting wood over the other side) and that's how our Bruce met his downfall

DumbledoresGirl · 03/10/2007 17:26

I haven't got to grips with the de-fleaing/worming yet

Our cats are almost total outdoor animals (it is not unusual for me not to see at least one of them for over 24 hours in the summer) so you would think they were the type to pick up fleas but there has been nothing yet.

They need their annual jabs soon though so I guess I will have to ask the vet again what it is I am supposed to be doing for them. I keep forgetting

DumbledoresGirl · 03/10/2007 17:28

LOL my children have just seen the picture of those Siberian kittens and said "Can we adopt them?"

geekgirl · 03/10/2007 17:29

np - it's a myth (Siberians being non-allergenic)

I have a cat allergy and am unfortunately just as allergic to Siberians as to other cats

mozzybear · 03/10/2007 17:37

Keep up to date with the flea treatments. We had a major problem with our (sadly no longer with us) cat last summer. I knew it had got bad when I lay in bed and I could see a flea jumping along the bed. Cat went to VET and we got some furnising spray. Not ideal when 6m pg!!

Am getting kitten too in a few weeks. Never had a kitten before, only fully grown cat so will probably be doing the same!

nailpolish · 03/10/2007 18:14

are you sure geekgirl? thats a shame
sorry daisy if i mislead you

I've just looked at a few sites and according to what I've read siberians are less likely to cause an allergic reaction as they produce less dander due to oilier skins.

As DHs allergy is mild he will hopefully be OK. I've emailed a breeder who has a ginger and white male available.

geekgirl · 04/10/2007 08:11

100% sure (having tried it first hand and getting to drive 80 miles back home with a puffy face and weeping eyes as a result ) - I was really hoping it would be fine, too.

geekgirl · 04/10/2007 08:13

but dander isn't produced by the skin - dander is the dried saliva.

Make completely sure your dh tries out an adult Siberian - you need to test it with a cat that is grooming itself, not a kitten. Kittens don't groom themselves that much yet.

mustsleep · 04/10/2007 08:31

we have just recently got a kitten too and although thankfully she was really good about the litter tray before we got her i read a load of stuff that might be useful

it said things like find out the kind of litter she had before

make sure it's always clean

they don;t like to be watched when they go

if they go on the floor to wipe it up with something that doesn;t have ammonia in it as that smell is similar to urine and they will go back to that spot again

if they do miss the tray to pick them up and just say no in a stern voice

etc hth

although full of kitten toilet training ideas dd keeps peeing on her pillow

mustsleep · 04/10/2007 08:35

sorry can i ask what you people that are allergic to cats use

my sister is serioulsey allergic to our kitten and she comes round most weekends and leaves with really swollen eyes and a streaming nose - not that this stops her from sitting with the cat on her knee

mummyhill · 04/10/2007 09:00

I use an antihistamine called zirtec. It works well for me although I don't need it at home only if I visit a house with multiple cats or a strange cat iyswim. I seem to be immune to my own cat now.

nailpolish · 04/10/2007 09:08

apparently siberian cats dont have the same protein in their fur/skin/whatever
you must be ultra sensitive, geekgirl, thats such a shame
i hope you are lucky daisy!

mustsleep - thanks for the tips. i am trying to discourage dds to stop following kitten around - they are probably putting her off her poo!

she did one in tray this morning (good girl!) she came and informed me at 530am

geekgirl · 04/10/2007 09:08

I use clarityn and also eye drops/nasal spray

like mummyhill though it really varies - some cats are worse than others (the Siberian was really bad, whereas I am quite ok with my friend's moggie)

nailpolish · 05/10/2007 09:21

came downstairs to 2 poos on hte carpet this morning in the same spot as last ones

yesterday afternoon i caught her squatting to do a poo in this spot - but she has most of her poos and all her wees in the litter tray

should i get the GET OFF spray

i have sprayed the area with lemon juice, apparently that helps?

i cant really section her off to a specific area, its not practical

OP posts:
Whizzz · 05/10/2007 16:40

Our cat did poo outside her tray when we had changed brands of cat litter. As soon as we went back to the original, no problems !

nailpolish · 05/10/2007 16:41

i bought the same kind they were using at the cat shelter

its wierd cos its not every poo - maybe every third poo

OP posts:
nailpolish · 05/10/2007 16:42
