DS has had a hamster bought for him (we pre approved)
It’s a dwarf hamster but after googling I’ve realised there are different types.
Can anyone identify from these pics and any general advice please Smile

Russian dwarf is most likely. Roborovski is smaller I think

FelicityBeedle · 17/06/2020 15:47

Looks like a Russian dwarf, which is essentially the mongrel of dwarf hamsters.
Just so you know, hamsters need a cage at least 50x80cm in size. This used to be the RSPCA advice but they changed it due to pressure from pet shops. He could also do with a wheel of 20cm diameter, very cheap on Amazon. Dwarves are difficult to tame as a rule, and getting a large cage and wheel will make a massive difference

Also he’s adorable Grin

It’s a lovely Syrian

JonHammIsMyJamm · 17/06/2020 15:54

Syrians are much friendlier and less bitey ime. Hope he is just a baby Syrian, for your sake! YY, please get him a nice big cage with lots of interesting things in it.

Sonichu · 17/06/2020 15:57

Syrian.

FrostyGirl66 · 17/06/2020 15:59

Definitely a Syrian, judging by the size and coat pattern. Dwarfs don't grow that big.

dementedpixie · 17/06/2020 16:01

A Syrian isn't a dwarf hamster. Make sure your cage is big enough

dementedpixie · 17/06/2020 16:04

Do Russian dwarf hamsters usually have a stripe down their back?

FrostyGirl66 · 17/06/2020 16:05

No it's not a dwarf hamster. It's a Syrian.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/06/2020 16:28

He's a Syrian.

Mum2beSept2020 · 17/06/2020 16:37

That’s a Syrian hamster not a dwarf hamster

Soubriquet · 17/06/2020 16:40

Yeah that isn’t a dwarf hamster, it’s a Syrian which means it will grow to the full size of a hamster.

It will need a bigger cage than the fun type you have.

nettytree · 17/06/2020 16:44

Ikea detolf cabinet makes a great home. Just use it on its side and change the door for a mesh top.

Sorry pressed post too soon.
Shes actually tiny, I think it’s just the angle I’ve taken the photos, I was trying to get right up close, she was bought from PAH and was advised she’s a dwarf breed (and they then recommended a dwarf cage as she’d be able to get out of a barred cage, although we will get a bigger cage as she gets a bit bigger)
She’s really happy to be handled so far, and seems to be adjusting to our sleep patterns as she was awake a fair bit today.

She’s lovely and we are all besotted Smile

She fits in the little blue pot that’s in the first pic with room to spare around her just to give an idea of how tiny she is

OP posts:
Eaudeunaturale · 17/06/2020 18:23

Ps I don’t mind if she’s a Syrian or a dwarf breed, we planned on getting a bigger cage In time anyway, I was more asking so I could gauge her traits etc, this is our first hamster so don’t want to miss something important Smile

How old is Hammy? They all start small.

YummyVeggie · 17/06/2020 18:43

The shape of the nose makes her look like a Russian dwarf to me!

Emmagen · 17/06/2020 18:54

The colouring does make her look quite like a Syrian but I'd say she looks like she could be a Russian with unusual colouring. That's still not a complete answer as there are different types of Russian but that doesn't really matter. The other options are Chinese or Roboroski, she looks too big for a robo and they tend to be a nightmare to handle as they are truly tiny and insanely fast, she really doesn't look like a Chinese either, they tend to have pointier faces and longer tails (not that I can see the tail)

I always had Russian hamsters growing up. If well handled they are lovely little things!

Eaudeunaturale · 17/06/2020 19:27

She is approximately 9 weeks, I guess we shall see in time whether she is a Dwarf or a Syrian but thank you for whittling it down to likely a Russian if she is a dwarf type.
I never thought I’d be a lover of small pets but she is really lovely

BettyOBarley · 17/06/2020 19:36

We just got a Syrian last week and it looks very similar. How long have you had her? Did you start picking her up straight away? Ours is very jumpy and so we've just left her alone so far apart from offering treats. I don't want to scare her.

Eaudeunaturale · 17/06/2020 19:41

She is approx 9 weeks, we’ve had her for a few days.
She has been very happy to be handled so far, we held her from the minute we had her, just let her crawl over our arms and hands. I warned DS not to wake her as she might nip.
I read that some hamsters have a bad time if not split up from others in store Sad
