Help with our puppys actual breed name...

Mummybear147 · 14/05/2020 16:07

Hi all,
we have just recently got a puppy and although we know the breeds of her parents, I'm not sure what I refer to our new puppys breed as and if there is a proper term for her mixed breed 😂 so her mum is a pug x Boston terrier and her dad is a French bulldog....so what does that make our pup
I know you get french buggs..but she also has abit of boston in her too....I've just been referring to her with calls to the vets ect as a french bulldog cross..bit then I have to go into explaining her breed composition fully... I wanted to know the actual name if there was one to make things clearer...if anyone can help me.
Thanks.

@Clymene they sound wonderful. Boston terriers are one of my all time favourite breeds and are great with responsible breeding and often able to give birth naturally to Boston terrier puppies but however sturdy the individual, their skulls and hips are always going to be dainty in comparison to French bulldogs same with pugs they are a totally different size in relation to the huge Frenchie heads.

My dog is beautiful @midnightstar66 Smile as his his mum. He's fast as a greyhound and can jump about 2.5 metres from a standing start. He is absolutely fantastic but I spent a very long time finding a good breeder because I know all the problems brachy dogs can have.

His farts would wake the dead though Grin

Thank you for the clarification that she has no specific name as some dogs do and is just a mixed breed/mongrel...which is all I wanted to know to begin with.
thank you to all that can just answer a question simply without any added self ri righteous judgemental scoldings to another person.
Jeez 👍😂

Honestly, the fact you didn’t know that already and actually needed to ask here is deeply concerning.

20 years ago this dog would have been given away free or just a couple of ££s . These days most dogs are given a name and and a hefty price tag . Hopefully you didn't pay too much for the dog.

TinySleepThief · 14/05/2020 20:46

You mean thank you to all those who pointed out how unwell you dog is likely to get and whom seem to care more than you do about the shitty life of medical conditions your poor dogs going to have.

Mummybear147 · 14/05/2020 20:54

I suggest some deep breaths and maybe a glass of wine. She isnt your dog so you do not need to worry or get het up about it. Thank you for your input once again. Lovely group of people.

You do have a shit hot insurance policy though, right?

Considering the likely high price you aid for her, and the health problems associated with the mix of breeds, a very good policy is essential.

bloodywhitecat · 14/05/2020 20:59

I've got an English Springer/Kerry Blue terrier cross AKA a shitbag

LizzieMacQueen · 14/05/2020 21:14

OP you should have softened your question with a photo ....

Clymene · 14/05/2020 21:16

As you can see, I have a brachy dog. You need to get lifetime insurance.

Your dog is more likely than most to have breathing issues and problems with luxating patellas. Both of these are massively expensive to fix so however much some of these posts sting, the ones about insurance should be heeded.

Sonichu · 14/05/2020 21:27

What did you think the dog was going to be called OP? Didn't you ask the "breeder"?

chunkyrun · 15/05/2020 07:50

Spend the day breathing through a Ribena straw

sashh · 15/05/2020 08:19

Yes there's no official breed name, even the more established crosses which have been going for generations like labradoodles haven't got 'official' kennel club recognition yet.

That's because Labradoodles are not a breed, they never can be as long as one parent is one breed and the other parent a different breed.

You can only have a 'breed' when both parents are of that breed.

Obviously back in the mists of time there will have been a cross breed eg Goldern retievers and Irish setters have a common ancester and were bread into distinct gun dogs.

This why jack Russels were around for 200 years before becoming a KC registed breed in the last decade.

OP

Your dog is a mongrel.

I get quite angry about these 'breeders' who tell people lies about their dogs. Aquaintence has a 'cockerpoo' which isn't. The 'breeder' told her cockaspoos will be a registered breed in 40 years.

She also intends to 'breed' him.
I'm working on that one.

Just about every breed has some health problems, but it seems there are fewer with dogs bread to be working dogs rather than dogs bread purely for theur looks.

OP

I'm sure you love your dog and I'm sure he is lovely, I hope he doesn't develop health issues.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 15/05/2020 09:27

Yes, @sashh. The working versions of breeds which have been been bred for generations for health and vigour are usually much hardier than their ‘show type’ counterparts which have been bred over many generations to look a certain way. I believe there are lots of show breeders who are interested in improving the health of their particular breeds but it will take many generations and lots of work before we see any improvement and it’s doubtful whether some breeds can be saved as they’ve been so overbred Sad

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 15/05/2020 10:17

The reason we're getting 'het up' about other peoples' dogs is because we see so many dogs living unhappy, unhealthy lives with ignorant owners who just want a squashy-faced fashion item, and actually know very little about how to care for dogs with particular needs and health risks.
So yes, dog welfare in general does tend to get people het up.

KitchenConfidential · 15/05/2020 10:52

She isnt your dog so you do not need to worry or get het up about it.

Yes how dare we get upset about dogs being exploited and bred for money with no concern for their health and well-being.

NatureWalk · 15/05/2020 10:57

I don't get this naming crossbreeds thing. My parents have had lurchers (any sighthiund crossed with another breed) for years I was looking online for a dog the other day and saw someone selling whipperdoodles which apparently is a whippet x poodle, it made me laugh.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 15/05/2020 10:57

Maybe the comments on this thread came too late for you, OP but perhaps they’ll give someone who is thinking about a brachy breed or a brachy mix pause for thought. Perhaps they didn’t realise the issues these dogs have and the extra care that needs to be taken when breeding and owning these dogs? Perhaps it’ll prompt them to do more reading and choose a more ethical breeder or perhaps they’ll choose another breed entirely?

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 15/05/2020 10:57

A fool and their money @Mummybear147

Hoppinggreen · 16/05/2020 11:08

Yes, I only care about my own dog
People crossing breeds in a way more likely to cause serious health issues doesn't bother me in the slightest
People breeding irresponsibly to make money doesn't bother me
What happens to bitches when they are no longer useful doesn't bother me
Dogs kept in awful conditions to be bred from doesn't bother me
dogs suffering awful short lives due to deformity or genetic issues doesn't bother me
Or maybe all those things do bother me because I'm a decent human being who loves dogs?
And if you think you got a hard time on here OP try moving your post to The Doghouse.

midnightstar66 · 19/05/2020 21:19

@TheDogsMother I had to come back to this thread as today I met 2 jack- shit puppies. Absolutely adorable despite the name 🤣

TheDogsMother · 19/05/2020 21:26

@midnightstar66 🤣. I've met one as well and it was a real sweetheart. When the owner told me what cross it was I wanted to laugh but I don't think it had ever dawned on him. I had a Jack Russell and can safely say he was a Jack Shit at times.

midnightstar66 · 19/05/2020 21:43

This guy didn't seem like a jack shit at all 😆 very mild mannered and a bit scared of my more outgoing not even 12 week definitely jack shit pure Jack Russell (the other was in a carrier as he cba to walk 😍) . I'd never even heard of them til this thread and it made my day when I met the little guys today.

Sitdowncupoftea · 21/08/2020 01:01

Any cross of two breeds is a crossbreed.
