What am I going to do about a chicken that keeps in coming in through the cat flap?!

DaisyMOO · 03/09/2007 15:13

Will I have to get a new magnetic cat flap?! Any chicken-training ideas?

(Must admit that it was very handy at lunchtime because it pecked up all of the mess the kids had made under the table )

Awww, it just wants love - make it a little nest in the lounge

filthymindedvixen · 03/09/2007 16:13

I'm sorry for your troubles...really I am but I am PMSL at this thread...and the image of you waiting, armed with photos of foxes to shout ''RRRAAAAA!'' in an Alpha-Chichen styleee

Slubberdegullion · 03/09/2007 16:14

Flamebatfink, therein lies the road to chicken chaos.

We let dd2 climg into bed with us 2 weeks ago for 'love'. I returned her to bed 14 times last night.

No Daisy, you need to keep strong. Get your ds on board. He could flap a tarpaulin and shout RAAAhH you could flash fox photos and squrt lemon and shout RAAAH. And draw menacing faces on some eggs. That might work.

FlameBatfink · 03/09/2007 16:19

Stop returnin her to her bed - much lower figures tomorrow

Little chicken nappy to stop the sh*t on floor situation, nice little fluffy cuddles in the evening.

I tell ya, will be a heart warming disney film within the next 12 months

Slubberdegullion · 03/09/2007 16:20

OK, have you a lap top. Position by cat flap. When chicken puts head through press play

here.

Freaked me out.

DaisyMOO · 03/09/2007 16:21

Do you stock any chicken nappies Flame?

I used to have a Starbunz duck nappy, but sold it recently. Only have a cow one left now, and not sure if it would fit.

Gimme her measurements and I can play with a sewing machine

FlameBatfink · 03/09/2007 16:24

pmsl!!!!

Slubberdegullion · 03/09/2007 16:25

OH my dear Lord. I really have seen it all now. Chicken nappies. hahahahah

Eve · 03/09/2007 16:25

wring its neck and stuff it...

FlameBatfink · 03/09/2007 16:31

Do you think I should start stocking them...?

tortoiseSHELL · 03/09/2007 16:36

oh good lord. A chicken nappy.

Surely the next logical step is a chicken changing mat - how do you get it to lie down and hold its legs in the air? And can you use regular baby wipes?

Rofl @ the link! Not convinced my chooks are going to be overly keen!

FlameBatfink · 03/09/2007 16:39

Only if you use one of those babywipe warmer things

tortoiseSHELL · 03/09/2007 16:40

And and and - the egg must land in the diaper as well - the chicken would be wandering round with the egg poking out through the cloth - would look like the most ENORMOUS poo!

Slubberdegullion · 03/09/2007 16:45

DaisyMOO, forget RAAAAAAAAA. It's not gonna work.

Have done some research for you and you need to sound like this

Fox Song.

It's going to be difficult to pull off, but I think will ultimately aide the Flashing Fox Photos.

Now you just need to get some fox urine in a bottle to spray at it.

DaisyMOO · 03/09/2007 16:47

Right, will get practising

I am loving this thread so badly I just had to post rather than lurk.

Trespassing poultry - as problems go, it's unique

I'm just sorry I can't be of use, this is entirely outwith my realm of experience

theslownorris · 03/09/2007 16:51

I've got no idea what to do about the chicken but I just found amusing that while I was reading this a Bernard Matthews ad was flashing away to the right!!

tortoiseSHELL · 03/09/2007 16:57

You could get one of these

PrincessGoodLife · 03/09/2007 17:02

loud noise at regular intervals from inside the kitchen to put her off?

annoying moving things hanging from the catflap?

another catflap elsewhere for the cat, inaccessible to chicken? possibly higher up, assuming chicken's wings are clipped?

tighten hinges on catflap so it's more difficult for chicken to push it open?

problem is of course that some of these could stop the cat too...

Slubberdegullion · 03/09/2007 19:18

Update please Daisy. Or are you having tea with your chickens atm?

DaisyMOO · 03/09/2007 19:38

Yes, the chicken did come in during dinner I've tried playing the fox song at it loudly, I've tried singing the fox song myself and also making aggressive chicken noises (or what I think are aggressive chicken noises anyway) but the most successful thing has been spraying water at them (dh's idea). They run off sharpish when we do that but they return before too long.

I think part of the problem is that they are quite stupid and keep forgetting that we will squirt them if they come in! Anyway, they're tucked up on their perches now so we've got a bit of privacy We're going away for the weekend in a few weeks and we usually have someone in to feed the cats and they just come in and out as usual. Not sure what we're going to do if we haven't managed to instil some self-restraint into them by then. Could do with a copy of 'How to talk so chickens will listen'
