^Do^ I want a dog? And if so, what sort?

DS2 is nearly three. I am home most of the time. I quite miss having a dog.

Pros:

  • company, particularly for running
  • kids would love one
  • I really miss having a dog

Cons:

  • we do travel, what would we do with the dog then?
  • dogs not welcome in playgrounds etc
  • faff of walking, picking up poo, etc etc

And then of course, I don't know what sort of dog to get ... I don't want purebred, and I waver between big (good at running) and small (portable, less poo) ...

You want a wolfdog? Are you mad???????
Of course they would say it's safe! But that's not what I've heard about them. Yes they look great, but I think you'd be better off with the greyhound.

Look Here for well qualified information on your wolfdogs.

Ripeberry · 31/08/2007 17:26

For somebody who "arses" around you do come up with good info.
I was only looking into getting a wolf looking dog and they did mention the breeder in N.Somerset quite a lot.
Maybe it will be a Greyhound but it would have to Love cats.. i.e not want to chase them.
Thanks again

In Canada, pit bulls are legal. Wolves, or wolf crosses, kept as pets, are not. Says enough for me.

Of course, any moron with some sort of Alsatian or Husky type cross always says it's part wolf.

NQC, you're back! How was it?

No, you don't want a dog.

NotQuiteCockney · 31/08/2007 19:11

It was very very busy, but good. I did waterskiing. And hiking, and running, and canoeing and kayaking.

Oh, and we got shipwrecked, and went up in a helicopter, and saw a battle, and lots of street luge (of course!).

Oh.

I stayed here, and er, did not very much.

NotQuiteCockney · 31/08/2007 21:19

I thought you came to London and met up with people?

I'm off to Amsterdam next weekend. On my own. First weekend off since having DS1! Looking forward to it, a bit ...

Oh yes! I did. and HC came here for a bit. It just seemed a bit tame compared to helicopters and things.

FrannyandZooey · 31/08/2007 22:39

What you going to do in Amsterdam? and with whom?

absandme · 31/08/2007 22:45

Where are you staying in Amsterdam, I haven't been there since dd born... can't wait to go back but think we need a cheaper hotel! I'm hoping for a decent recommendation, love the continental breakfasts there but also like a bit of bacon, any suggestions?

As for dog staffordshire bull terriors ..... yeah theres loadsa bad press about them but if you look into it they are fantastic with children, really good to train (as long as you are consistent and reading puppy books helps! but this goes with any breed).

Staffys, they are small enough to sit on your knee (just!) and hard enough to go for a walk with!!!

NotQuiteCockney · 01/09/2007 11:26

I'm going to Amsterdam on my own! I quite like going places on my own, and god knows it's been ages. I'm just going to have a look around - there are about 5 billion European cities I've not been to, and it's about time I started visiting them.

I'm staying somewhere pretty central, I don't think my hotel will be great, tbh, I sorted it all out this week, and it was very stressful and fraught, and basically I've got somewhere that a) has room b) isn't hated by everyone on tripadvisor c) isn't a dorm d) isn't £300/night. I wanted to be near the Vondelpark, for running, but maybe I'll just walk and bike for exercise? Not sure.

I plan to start taking a weekend away every 6 months or something, we'll see. DH doesn't actually go off on holidays on his own, but he does sometimes end up away for a weekend by accident, iyswim. He's getting one in the US this fall.

Oh, and I love staffies and other muscle dogs, but don't think DH would go for one. Also, are they good at running? I do need either a dog that will run some (10km? Maybe?) or that I could easily carry.

Actually, my old terrier was ideal, he was very leggy, very fast, faster than most dogs that weren't whippets or greyhounds or whatever, but he was tiny and weighed nothing. He was a bit strange.

I know a couple of Staffies who go out running with their owners. And then there are the opposite spectrum Staffies that refuse to budge and like to spend all day sunbathing/chewing a log.

Some do, some don't. They will generally follow you anywhere though, for any distance, despite blisters on their paws. My Staff hiked up Snowdon with me one year - slept for ages afterwards though! They are not generally known for their athleticism - they are known for stamina.

If you are doing 10k you sound like a contender for a collie/cross.

winestein · 01/09/2007 21:25

Have re-added a photo of him on his way up Snowdon. Note the lack athletic-look!

lapsedrunner · 09/09/2007 20:32

You need one of these www.irishterriers.com/, just the right height for running and great with children.
