^Do^ I want a dog? And if so, what sort?

DS2 is nearly three. I am home most of the time. I quite miss having a dog.

Pros:

  • company, particularly for running
  • kids would love one
  • I really miss having a dog

Cons:

  • we do travel, what would we do with the dog then?
  • dogs not welcome in playgrounds etc
  • faff of walking, picking up poo, etc etc

And then of course, I don't know what sort of dog to get ... I don't want purebred, and I waver between big (good at running) and small (portable, less poo) ...

One thing I would say if your planning to rehome is make sure you talk to the person who has been looking after the dog you like.

That way you can be sure you will both be suited.

When dh and I were looking for a dog, we visited the RSPCA first and they insisted that we had a minimum 6ft fence???!
This was 6 years ago so it maybe different now.

Nbg · 30/08/2007 12:46

Oh and my 2 dogs are on my profile too if you want a look

twinsetandpearls · 30/08/2007 12:47

I ignored the purebred comment - your dog is lovely by the way CD- obviously not as lovely as mine but still lovely.

CountessDracula · 30/08/2007 12:47

We went for a ridgeback for a number of reasons, I guess you can't generalise about mixed breed dogs though can you?

eg ridgebacks are quiet round teh house, good with kids, unhassly, don't need hours and hours of walking etc

CountessDracula · 30/08/2007 12:48

oh nbg I LOVE beagles
sadly not appropriate where we live

If we ever move to the cuntry I would love one

twinsetandpearls · 30/08/2007 12:48

oooh a beagle!

NotQuiteCockney · 30/08/2007 12:48

Hounds seem like a real hassle. I'm tempted by either something lurcherish or terrierish.

ah
ridgebacks are hounds and the least hassley dogs ever I reckon

She sleeps 20 hours a day
no howling
no barking
very cuddly
talks a lot

NotQuiteCockney · 30/08/2007 12:49

Our garden is tiny, anyway, wouldn't be hard to supervise a dog in it.

Yes country very much appropriate for Beagles as we have found out
They are wanderers/Houdinis too!

NotQuiteCockney · 30/08/2007 12:50

Ridgebacks seem less houndy than, say, Vizulas or Weimariners ...

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 30/08/2007 12:51

Vizslas are not hounds they are gundogs as are Weimaraners

Nbg · 30/08/2007 12:52

I love your dog CD.
I have heard Weimeramas are very Obidient dogs.

What about a Greyhound. You can rehome ex race dogs.

NotQuiteCockney · 30/08/2007 12:53

Ah, right, I'm obviously using the wrong terms. Gundogs seem quite hard to manage, very active, needing a lot of exercise. What category are bulldogs etc? (I'd love a bulldog, or bulldog cross, or anything in that line, but doubt DH would go for it ...)

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 30/08/2007 12:53

Yes, ex-race greyhound would be an option. I find them a bit funny-looking, though - I'd worry I'd accidentally sit on it and break it!

Nbg · 30/08/2007 12:54

lol!

They are very lovely dogs though. The ones I have met have been so loyal and loving.

CountessDracula · 30/08/2007 12:54

groups here m'dear!

I know at least 3 very naughty weimaraners!!

DoubleBluff · 30/08/2007 12:55

Dogs smell and so do their houses.

CountessDracula · 30/08/2007 12:55

Greyhounds are fantastic town dogs
Really ideal

twinsetandpearls · 30/08/2007 12:55

Weimeramas are good dogs in the right hands, we have one up the road that has not een trained and is allowed to run riot and he is a disaster waiting to happen - I have reported it many a time to the RSPCA.

Nbg · 30/08/2007 12:55

ahhhh Twinset

Tortington · 30/08/2007 12:56

IMO purebreeds are rubbish.

there.

fuckinell.

NotQuiteCockney · 30/08/2007 12:56

A neighbour has a lovely weimariner, really really well-behaved. They do exist, I know it.

My parents' redbone was horrible, though.
