Found our cat dead in her bed this morning- kittens 5 weeks

Had the awful experience of finding my beloved cat dead on her bed this morning. She was 2, no health issues, and behaving normally yesterday evening. She has 5 kittens, approx 5/6 weeks old. I'm devastated and will have to break the news to my children tonight... She was really my eldest daughter's cat, and got her (daughter) through recent surgery and radiotherapy for an aggressive brain tumour, so it will be exceptionally difficult for her to take in. I'm also worried about the kittens --will they be ok on kitten food/cat milk? They started weaning last week but were still feeding from mum.
Any thoughts/advice very welcome!

Thing is though cat theres a time and a place to be right, and then there are times where it's right to recognise that despite your opinion on something it's really unpleasant to kick people when they are already down.

CatPunsFreakMeowt · 13/10/2019 22:01

Althea I didn’t suggest an autopsy. Another poster did and the OP replied that she couldn’t afford it. That’s my issue. They cost less than £200.

Room I’m not trying to be right, and certainly not kicking anyone when they’re down. Having experienced heart disease in my own cat I’m very concerned how the OP would meet these costs. Also, I’d challenge anyone here to do some time in their local rescue centre and still muster up some pleasure at yet another unneeded litter of kittens.

diege I'm so sorry about your cat, how horrible for you all.
The kittens look totally adorable and you're obviously doing a great job with them.

CatPuns stop with the inappropriate lecturing. Op is an experienced cat owner who has had some terrible times recently.

Diege what a time you and your family are having Thanks the kittens are beautiful, so glad you're keeping two.

Thank you for all of your supportive comments! All (but the two) have families lined up to take them and the two we are keeping are thriving.
Very surprised to read the rather tactless comments from Catpuns....You can sleep easy knowing that I have pet insurance, but thanks for your heartfelt concern for my bereaved children after the suicide of their dad and my very poorly daughter. The cats got her through the diagnosis and while yes, in an ideal world things would have been different, we're muddling through as well as we can.

That’s lovely to hear and see. The black one is sooo fluffy!

diege · 26/10/2019 17:21

Teens, the black one was named 'Fluffa' by one of the children until a friend pointed out the rather unsavoury role of a 'Fluffa' in the porn industry 😩😩😩 He's 'Bobby' now!

Thank you Labaz, but both kittens are now onto solid food and no health or other issues to report!

Very odd Mum cat died unexpectedly. Mother cat may have had worms, unrealised. Been anaemic & kittens taken her iron reserves. Having fleas encourages worms & robs cats of precious iron & other vitamins. If having worms Mother cat being extra hungry over past wks., meowing may have been mistaken by you as her showing awareness of extra feed needs carrying kittens, is pos. Kittens Now will need worming (can buy drops in small bottle)& flea prevention.
