Found our cat dead in her bed this morning- kittens 5 weeks

Had the awful experience of finding my beloved cat dead on her bed this morning. She was 2, no health issues, and behaving normally yesterday evening. She has 5 kittens, approx 5/6 weeks old. I'm devastated and will have to break the news to my children tonight... She was really my eldest daughter's cat, and got her (daughter) through recent surgery and radiotherapy for an aggressive brain tumour, so it will be exceptionally difficult for her to take in. I'm also worried about the kittens --will they be ok on kitten food/cat milk? They started weaning last week but were still feeding from mum.
Any thoughts/advice very welcome!

How are the kittens today OP?

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 10/10/2019 12:29

OP, I'm aware Royal Canin isn't the best food out there but when I rescued dcat I was out of options and she ate the Royal Canin Mother and Babycat mousse very well. www.royalcanin.com/us/cats/products/retail-products/mother-and-babycat-canned-cat-food/amp

We bathed them in the sink until they got too old and angry, they still had a bit of a yellow tinge to them but they are all cleaning themselves and are fine now

Teensruletheroost · 11/10/2019 10:02

Hope all is going well OP?

diege · 11/10/2019 14:29

They're doing well thank you, and all but the two were keeping have their forever homes arranged for a few weeks time! They are, however, still quite poor at cleaning themselves and I've resorted to the kitchen tap as cotton wool and water wasn't cutting it! 🤣
I've ordered a nice book of photos of Matilda (mum) for the children too 😊

Glad they are doing well Smile

Just catching up with this. Your poor children OP and poor you, you’ve been through so much.

The kittens are all adorable and look like they are thriving. The litter looks very much like the one we got our first two rescue cats from, we chose the ginger and the tortie!

Our vet neutered that pair at 5 months as they were brother and sister. With our new boy we’ve been told to wait until he’s closer to 6 months (he’s booked in for a week before) as he’s an only!

Fleetheart · 12/10/2019 16:09

What lovely kittens, thanks for the pics, glad they are thriving.

catyrosetom2 · 12/10/2019 16:27

Aw such gorgeous kittens. Glad they are doing well. But so sorry about your Dcat Matilda.

HerRoyalFattyness · 12/10/2019 16:37

Awwww I'm sorry about Matilda, but also wanted to say how cute they are!

caringcarer · 13/10/2019 21:20

Cat mousse is good for weaning. Mix 2 teaspoonfuls with kitten milk and mush it up until like a thick gruel. They can lap at it and it will create firmer stools too.

CatPunsFreakMeowt · 13/10/2019 21:29

Is it a good idea for you to keep two when you can’t even afford an autopsy for your cat? If she has died from heart disease the answer is YES the kittens have probably inherited it too, so could easily end up needing medication to avoid the same fate. My cat with heart disease has had medical bills running into the thousands.

Will you be neutering these ones before they get pregnant/ breed with another cat?

We are overrun with unwanted cats in this country already, thousands stuck in rescue centres.

Hi @CatPunsFreakMeowt

Odfo with your patronising comments. Have you thought about being nice at all?

Don’t be ridiculous! You are showing yourself up to be goody, ignorant and up your own arse. PLease fottfsof and then fo some more. And then hide this thread as OP clearly annoys you.

Hmm Biscuit
CatPunsFreakMeowt · 13/10/2019 21:44

Ignorant? If the OPs cat has died from heart disease (likely) then it IS a genetic condition that the kittens will be affected by. This is why it’s never a good idea to breed from any random cat/ pet. If the OP can’t fund an autopsy for her cat how do you expect her to fund thousands of pounds towards treatment for heart disease in 2x cats? The magic money tree? Hmm

RoomR0613 · 13/10/2019 21:45

Have you even read all of the OPs messages Cat? The mother cat had been booked in for neutering but it coincided with the OP's daughters brain tumour diagnosis and slipped down the priority list?

The OP is also widowed with young children, is it really a surprise that her finances might not run to a cat autopsy? She's keeping two out of the 5 kittens, hardly the actions of a financially driven backyard breeder.

Exactly my point about it being questionable to keep two kittens who are likely to need costly medical treatment.

RoomR0613 · 13/10/2019 21:49

Presumably pet insurances pays for treating sick animals.

It probably doesn't pay for autopsies

Someone can financially factor monthly pet insurance costs into their budget, they probably can't shell out hundreds of pounds for an autopsy.

CatPunsFreakMeowt · 13/10/2019 21:51

The cat was two years old, I’m sure there has been an opportunity in that space of time for her to be taken to the vet and neutered.

CatPunsFreakMeowt · 13/10/2019 21:52

Well I hope the OP does take out pet insurance for these kittens as they’re likely to cost her a fortune down the line.

Basil90 · 13/10/2019 21:54

So so sorry OP Flowers

AltheaVestr1t · 13/10/2019 21:54

I have literally never heard of anyone forking out for a cat autopsy, that’s ridiculous.
