We have a rule in this house that the kids must not open the front door as the dog will bolt out. Dd2 just opened the front door, the dog got out and ran after a dog of the same breed, the lady walking the dog kept running further away from me, and I had to shout at her to stop running, so I could catch my dog, but my dog then bit her dog on the back not a big bit, didn;t break the skin but sort of grab the skin IYKWIM I just don't know if I can trust him now... We know he doesn't like other dogs and we dont have other dogs here for that reason, he is fine with our cats and us..

get rid of him.

VeryBigCake · 20/06/2007 18:34
Wink
VeryBigCake · 20/06/2007 18:39

firstly big sis, a well trained dog shouldnt bolt out of the door. i know you do love your dog (even if i dont lol) but dont want to see you upset. he needs more training, especially regarding the front door and bolt.

and can you trust him? i dont know.

NoodleStroodle · 20/06/2007 18:40

Get that posh dog trainig lady in - she looks fab.
I think it is a question of training - what sort of pooch is he?

sparklygothkat · 20/06/2007 18:42

staff, I know, i know, people are going to rip me to pieces..

Just sounds like he needs some dog training lessons tbh. They are quite pricey but a complete necessity if he is acting up.

I wouldn't trust any dog for what it's worth and I have one of my own and am a vet nurse so do love them with all my heart.

sparklygothkat · 20/06/2007 18:48

More training I can handle that, was worried that people would tell me to him put to sleep

£15 for 8 sessions dog training where we are. £5 for insurance for a year. I need to take our dog again, he's not good with other dogs

NoodleStroodle · 20/06/2007 18:50

Nooo - you need to give the mutt a chance but you need to think what if had run into the road and caused an accident etc etc

Chloe55 · 20/06/2007 18:51

Some people are quick to judge, sounds like he got excited when he ran out of the house, if he wanted to hurt the dog he bit then he would have ragged it to death being a staffie! He was probably just over-playing as he doesn't know his limits but obviously you can't risk him over-playing with the kids so def invest in training.

Ours is a staffy x collie x lab. So going after other dogs makes sense

AbRoller · 20/06/2007 19:07

I love Staffies have two of them and if your dog wanted to kill that other dog I'm sure he could have due to his physical makeup. No way would I have him put to sleep for that.

I think the reason the poor staffies get such a bad name is because of the idiots that fight them but even the ones that are pets have the potential to be dangerous with anyone, family included.

Personally, I would never take the chance of letting either of my dogs in the house when dd around unless I can supervise 100% (not busy with making dinner or on MN) because I think at the end of the day (apart from getting dark!) dogs are dogs and will never be domesticated to the degree of earning 100% trust to 'behave', 'play fare' or not get pissed off and react if provoked by an unsuspecting child.

AbRoller · 20/06/2007 19:11

oops, meant 'play fair'

magnolia1 · 20/06/2007 19:23

Oh hun

Ok firstly his breed has NOTHING to with it and anyone who knew abnything about dogs would know that (including unbiased vets!!)

The reason there are so many staffies in resue centres is because they are brought up incorrectly and then dumped when they don't behave

How far was the staffy from your house? Not an excuse at all but he would have been in protective mode when leaving the house.

So proper training is needed and preferably with an adpt trainer. They can come to your home and go out with you, they will also further down the line arrange stooge dogs (if they get as far as helping overcome his dislike to other dogs)
The only problem is they cost quite a bit. Is he insured? If so then your vet could arrange this and you may be covered on the insurance.

Chloe55 is right if he had wanted to attack he would have. What it sounds like he was doing was warning this dog and although it's not a good sign it certainly doesn't mean he is a vicious beast that needs getting rid of

{{{Hugs}}} to you I know how much you love him.
With proper training and expert help he could become a much nicer behaved dog around ather dogs. xxxx

Haribosmum · 21/06/2007 07:38

Hi. We used to have a dog (BC) who would go for other dogs (especially bigger dogs or dog he wouldn't have stood a chance against if they'd had a go back LOL). He was 100% prefect with DS1 though. Obviously he was always supervised but he could lie on him and alsorts and the dog would just lie there and walk away when he'd had enough. I agree with everyone else, he just needs more training. How old is your dog? Sometimes (like in our case) the dog is just so used to going after other dogs it's really hard to get them out of the habit. (But not impossible) We found the older our dog got the less he would go after other dogs. Maybe he realised he was an old crock and wouldn't win a fight!? Don't give up hope. TBH the other lady was stupid for running which didn't help the situation.
