Ideas on breeds please

I am looking to get a dog very soon and would like an idea on a breed. My ds is allergic to the shedding variety of dog so am looking at getting a dog that needs clipping/non-shedder/low shedder etc. I am at home most of day or out walking (am a dog walker!) so that isn't a problem. Also need a breed that is good with children (ds is 3 yrs). Also should I go for a bitch or dog? I have heard mixed thoughts on which works best with children. Am in south of england so if anyone knows of any good breeders that would be great too.

Many thanks

BB

Also - don't forget there's no such thing as a true non-shedder. All dogs are going to lose some hair, but some lose much less than others.

Breeds to consider could be - soft coated wheaten terrier, norfolk terrier, standard poodle or tibetan terrier (don't be put off by the long hair... keep them clipped and they look far more charming IMO!) - possibly avoid the wirehaired hunt/point/retrieve breeds as the can require an awful lot of commitment... rescue rates on these breeds are really high.

hi, can i just ask a question, as my ds2 is also allergic to dogs. With your ds what are his symptoms?

i tink it's dogbreedinfo.com that has a list of lesser allergenic breeds btw.

Wow, only just seen that this thread has extended. Will take a look at that link - thanks Speccy and Cheeryface.

Have been enquirying about Border Terriers, but are looking to get the puppy in August/September so have a little time yet to do the research.

His reactions are his ezcema getting worse and wheezing. He gets like this around Retrievers/Labradors and a King Charles Cavalier.

One part of my house is all hard floors and that is a large area (2 rooms) which leads out into the garden so the dog will remain in this area and not going upstairs which should alleviate any further symptons even in a low shedder. Tibetan Terrier sounds interesting too.

Right, let's check this link....

Right then girls - I did it! I have just met "Ralph" (my ds chose the name) and he is coming to us on the 11th August. He is a border terrier and delightful.

Right - what now. What should I do to prepare? When do I register with vets etc?

Thanks for your help by the way!

Awww thats lovely.
Border Terriers are lovely.

I would register with the vets the day you get him and the same with pet insurance as they will insure him straight away usually.

Do you know what food he is eating? If so, buy some ready, water bowl, food bowl, collar and name tag. Also maybe make an appt when you register him with the vets to have him chipped.

Also a bed so that he knows where his place is to sleep.

Depending on how you want to do toilet training, puppy pads, spray to encourage him to go outside, poop scoop and lead.

HTH.

Okay, that's great thanks. She has told me the name of the food that she will be giving him but I can't remember, but she is giving me some to bring back with me.

He will be just over 8 weeks when we get him.

I run my own dog walking business so walking isn't an issue.

I am deffo going to get a crate so would love the reccomendation if poss.

I am still struggling with my ds and toilet training (wees fine, but poos terrible) so this could be an interesting and challenging time!

I have Pet Business Insurance already for my business, but does anyone have any recommendations for pet insurance on a domestic scale?

He is off to puppy training classes soon after his first injection so hopefully get him socialised quite well, plus it means I actually get out for one evening a week!

We got our crate from Pets at Home and paid top whack.
My BIL has 4 dogs and they bought a crate from a seller on ebay for half the price and its really good.

I would look there first.

Thanks Speccy. That's great. I did ask about a bit of bedding etc. but she didn't seem to understand about that, just told me to have lots of things to play/chew on! However he is one of the last to go as can't get down to him any earlier (he'll be nearly nine weeks) so may be able to get a bit of bedding. My old childminder used a ticking clock and a hot water bottle for her pup so will try that too.

He will be in the kitchen and dining room so I may not even hear him from my bedroom unless I put the baby monitor up, (I don't live in a big house, just an old one with thick walls!!!) should I do the monitor thing, or just leave it and sleep in ignorance????

P.s. I was cr*p with sleep etc with my ds (he still crawls into bed with me at a bout 5 in the morning) so feel like I am doing it all over again and want to get it right this time! Having said that am about to post about my ds's behaviour in the behaviour subject. Had a terrible day.

Thanks again Speccy . It looks like I am going to be haunted by baby monitors for a while!

I will follow what you said about the t-shirt and toy and hope this will be okay. Am probably going to get two cages as I need another one for my job (dog walker) so that would be very useful.

Thanks again, currently looking after a poorly Westie who has hurt his foot, but still needs company so am leaving now for a cuddle

Okay I have spent the last 10 days panicing about whether I have done the right thing! Have a question

I run my own business (dog walking) and for the first week of the puppy being here I will be out for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon (the rest of the time will be at home). I have managed to keep the first 3 days clear so will be at home all the time but after that I do have to go out. Will this be okay with a puppy?

I have a wire crate which will be Ralphies sleeping space and stair gates on the room that he will be in so he will be as safe as possible, but I am worried about the effect these few hours will have on him being on his own. What do others think? Obviously once injections and lead walking training/socialisation have happened he will be out with me all the time. I am just worried about those first few weeks. What are your thoughts/feelings on this?

I've got a 5mth old toller puppy, and I had the first week off with him , then returned to work part time (he comes to work with me alot so is only occaisionally at home for the odd morning when I've got meetings) I put him in his crate when I leave him, with water, chew toys. blanket etc. I first did this for just a few minutes while I was still in the house, but out of his sight, and gradually built it up, I would've thought this would be fine for your pup too, just make sure he gets used to being in the crate and gradually build it up, my pup often whines for the first couple of minutes but I've filmed him several times and he quickly settles, the neightbours don't hear him either. I know he's safe and he sleeps while he's in it. He loves his crate and often goes in it to rest when I'm at home too.
