Looks like we have to sell our puppy :(

We got her at the beginning of the summer at a time when my husband worked mainly from home. Our circumstances are now changed, so looks like we have to sell her. I think we've considered all possibilities of holding onto her. But in case there is an angle that I have overlooked, I am appealing to mum's net... We've asked family and friends to look after her during the week and holidays (I work in a college, term-time only so am free in holidays), but no-one is able to take on the long term commitment. We tried 'borrow-my-doggy' - but that would be a bit patchy, unreliable, not fair on her and stressful for us. So we've found a buyer and met up with them... Assuming they are interested, she will spend a final weekend with us, then on Sunday it will be goodbye! Any last minute ideas before we take the plunge?? Or since a sale is looking likely, I would like to know if anyone has been through this before. My 12 year old will be especially upset - does anyone have any inspirational words that will help us through this difficult time?

I'd be willing to bet all my worldly goods that the reason she can't go back to the breeder is because the OP bought her off some skanker on gumtree, (and probably paid a ridiculous amount).

I can't be the only person who is almost 100% sure this puppy did not come from a 'reputable' breeder.

quite an emotive subject clearly OP.

Return the dog to the breeder if you aren't willing to pay for doggy daycare services

This poor poor animal. It has been taken from its mother and brothers and sisters in the litter to come to your home and bond with you and learn to love you like her own new family and now you want to sell her and she will be so confused and scared.

Like others have said: dog walker or doggy daycare. But quite frankly you don't sound like the type of family who should be owning a dog, so best to give it back to the breeder.

SURELY you must have known your husband would no longer be working from home in a few months time? This can't have happened from one day to the next.

FFS Angry
I guess the OP wont be back.
DH came home with a 4 month old unwanted Christmas puppy many years ago. She was a right little mutt. I really didn't want her as we were no kids, working full time, lots of holidays, always out etc.
Anyway, she died 18 years later, after we had 2 kids and she made 2 overseas moves with us. Still holds the fondest place in our hearts.
Hang your head in shame OP

Return the dog, please do not sell. Please!

Didn't your breeder advise you what to do if you didn't want or couldn't have the puppy anymore?

Few things on here upset me but omg that poor pup.
I'm sure you're not listening to anything on here but for goodness sake op!!!!!
If you really can't honour the commitment you made to that dog, and you did make a commitment then return to the breeder.
Don't ever , under any circumstances ever get a pet again, you're really not up to it.

Maybe if pup is returned to breeder, then OP won't get any money, unlike selling to a random she just met. Hmm

If you were a stay at home parent and suddenly had to go to work , would you have your children adopted because you could no longer be at home to care for them etc ? Of course not ! You'd find a childminder or after school club - same thing applies to a dog.

Hi there everyone,

Whilst we know this is a sensitive issue and is upsetting for a lot of Mumsnetters, please remember that anything unnecessarily nasty isn't really what Mumsnet is about. You're more than welcome to disagree with OP but anything MNHQ feels is not in the spirit will be deleted.

Can you not afford a doggy day care? Or the very least a dog walker? When I was about 16 I used to take my Mums neighbours dog for a walk at lunch time and eared £5 a walk I was so happy with the money and her dog got a good walk at a cheap rate... any young neighbours? I would NOT sell a dog, you do not know anything about these people, they could be lying about who they are. Poor dog

Hi OP. I actually work from home and my dog is in the house at the same time. To be honest, he pootles around and barely interacts with me. He goes and sits in another room and then just walks around the house when he gets a bit bored. My son takes him out for a walk when he comes home from school and he is perfectly fine and happy.
My point is that your dog will probably be fine for part of the day alone at home and you could just plan for a dog sitter to pop him out for a cuddle a half-hour walk until you get home. I don't really see the need to get rid of it. My dog sitter also has him if we go on holiday. He absolutely adores her (probably because her rules are far more lax than mine). Is a dog sitter not a possibility?

Just one example of someone whose prepared to see their dog go off to some random as long as they're coughing up the money...

Actually, sorry for diversion, but I see that the gumtree poster above is selling other dogs when I click on their other adverts. Angry

You pay for a walker or daycare.
You don't sell it. If you must rehome go through breeder or a charity if (as I suspect) the pup is from a puppy farmer.

Why would they have 3 dogs of the same age and be selling them all? Or selling any of them come to that.

That poor dog on Gumtree Sad Look at her little face. Weird they are selling two cockerpoos also, given what the lab advert said.

Fab, another dog bought on a whim & now the novelty has worn off. Another dog that will likely end up in the hands of somebody less than savoury so that some money can be clawed back.

If you have never seen what happens to dogs bought & sold without due diligence, believe me it is haunting. Dogs are not accessories to be chucked away when they no longer fit ffs. Where you got the dog from will be very telling!

Either send her back to the breeder or get in touch with a rescue to vet potential homes.
