So gorgeous - just wondered whether they were as lovely as I think ?

They can be. They aren't hypoallerginic though, so don't get one for that. Some are, but the majority aren't.

binker · 03/06/2007 12:05

I'd love a whippet - labradoodles might have hair that sheds and dh is paranoid about fluff

Not too bothered about shedding hair - not after one for that reason - just think they look so utterly adorable - like teddy dogs ! dh used to have a lab - and I was hoping to get something a tad smaller and cuter !

Jigglypuff is a fab name for a labradoodle !

someone once said on here why dilute the intelligence of a poodle with the daftness of a lab

rather my feeling about them

Dogsby · 03/06/2007 14:08

oi enid

elastamum · 03/06/2007 14:14

We have a lovely golden labradoodle. She is 7 months old and an absolute star. she is great with kids, really friendly. They do tend to be bigger than labs and they do need a lot of exercise so dont get one unless you like to walk a lot. Ours is wooly and doesnt shed, but you cant guarentee that as they are all different

elastamum · 03/06/2007 14:14

I think they are as smart as a poodle but calmer. And as greedy as a lab

scatterbrain · 03/06/2007 14:17

Ooooh - bigger than labs !!! I was hoping for smaller than ! Have seen mention on websites of minidoodles - maybe that's what I need !

Hmmm - have never known an actual poodle Enid - but dh's lab was a complete buffoon - so you may be right there !

Bit shocked that labradoodle puppies are going to £750 - which is a lot for what is essentially a mutt !

I am very shallow - I just like the way the look - and the fact that they are good with kids and friendly ! cannot bear yappy dogs !

I have a black labradoodle and he is very woolly. He hardly sheds and when he does it comes out in little clumps rather than airborne hairs, it doesn't stick to clothes or furniture. He is hypo-allergenic. He does have some labrador tendencies (scavenging) but is totally adorable and everyone who meets him falls in love with him (apart from my MIL, but that doesn't count).

He's gentle and brilliant with the kids and takes whatever they put him through with good spirits. He's always ready to play and will happily exercise as much as we allow him to, so can cope equally with a small amount as much as a really long walk (it varies each day). He sleeps a lot during the day, he loves playing and cuddles. He's about the same height as a labrador but slimmer. The size can vary depending on the parentage and whether or not they are F1 (first generation labrador x standard poodle) ours was bred from a 5th generation labradoodle father and a labrador mother. He is very healthy, and we've had no problems with him on that front at all. You can get them in all colours and with different coat types & different sizes if bred from smaller poodles so there is a doodle to suit everyone. Check out different breeders and find one that you feel comfortable with. We got ours from here

There are also more poodle crossbreeds gaining in popularity if you're not keen on the labrador part, you could look at spoodles (spaniel x poodle) and goldendoodles (golden retriever x poodle) etc.

Hope that helps.

"5th generation labradoodle father"

hahahahahaha

sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 18:34

I saw a labradoodle at the vets once, I fell in love with it [aww]

scatterbrain · 03/06/2007 18:45

They are just gorgeous aren't they ? Like live teddys ! I am a bit worried about how different they all turn out though - I would like a shortish, solid one with fat legs with curly longish fur ! Not that I'm picky or anything - and obviously personality paramount ! i did say I was shallow !

OP posts:
elibelly · 03/06/2007 19:12

Oi PPH what's so funny about that?? It just means that my dog's dad is the great great grandson of a labradoodle bred to a labradoodle rather than labrador bred to poodle.

Scatterbrain - they all have tons of personality, lots of mischief, you won't be lacking that if you get a doodle. As for being shallow in seeking certain characteristics, dogs have been bred for centuries to achieve a certain look or temprament, so why not.

elibelly · 03/06/2007 19:15

Scatterbrain, have you looked at Wheaten Terriers, they might fit the bill of what you're looking for as well.

scatterbrain · 03/06/2007 19:52

oooh thanks - they are lovely too elibelly - I hadn't seen them before ! I am not very knowledgable on the dog front !

Only problem with that is that it says they don't like cats - will attack if a cat moves suddenly ! And I have two old lazy mogs !

OP posts:
dinny · 03/06/2007 19:53

they're so expensive - can't believe a god could cost so much!

dinny · 03/06/2007 19:54

lol, obv I meant dog - what a typo!

scatterbrain · 03/06/2007 19:57

I know and they're not even pedigrees - Kennel Club doesn't recognise them as they are cross breeds !! They are being called designer dogs apparently - and I think breeders are making a pretty packet out of it !

Scatterbrain muses on whether there is room for puppy farm at new house !!

OP posts:
dinny · 03/06/2007 19:58

dh just said 'let's start breeding labradoodles!"

bananabump · 03/06/2007 20:00

I hadn't seen one so did a google image search and aaaw, they're adorable!

Teddy dog!

BettySpaghetti · 03/06/2007 20:01

Graham Norton has apparently got a Labradoodle -in fact he might be looking for a home for it as I read today that it apparently chewed some of his kitchen cupboards causing thousands of pounds of damage.

elibelly · 03/06/2007 20:28

The breeder we got ours from is totally committed and completely decent. She breeds the dogs in her home, she socialises all her puppies with cats and children & other dogs, she also takes them out in the car to get them used to that before their trip to their new home. She's careful not to overbreed and you get to meet the mum and the dad of your pup when you pick it up, which is quite rare.

Sadly, it has become quite trendy to get a doodle or other funky crossbreed. We got ours partly for the allergy issues and partly for the temperament.

As for Graham Norton's dog, it was probably bored, I suspect GN doesn't have much time to spend with his dog considering the work schedule he must have. He's got an F1 labrador/standard poodle cross and it's a really big one apparently.

Otter · 03/06/2007 20:29

dp rates labradoodle not usually a good earner for a vet btw hatrick!
