Have just got a staff pup,,,,,,,

Can anyone offer any advice about training this breed and all other puppy related things?

The pup is a 11 week old bitch, very cute, looks like a cow (the colour).

Just wondering if anyone has a staff who could give me some pointers?

TIA

temperament,, agressive towards other animals but good with children

I wouldn't buy one.

I wouldn't want a dog that is recommended to be "always kept on leesh when out in a public place".

no way.

but I guess that I and the writer of that artacle are ignorant as well then.

I already have the puppy and i am not going to take her back just because you think it is irresponsible tbh.

I started this thread to ask anyone else who has this breed to give me some pointers, i would NOT risk my kids in any way and take offense at what you have said actually.

This thread wasn't started to have people come on here and put me down for getting her is was to get some advice.

I did look into information about the breed before getting her, and as i said i know quite a few people who have staffs with kids i didn't go into this blind actually.

the staffy that attacked my dog was socialized with other dogs. was brilliant with kids. was a lovely natured dog.

The attack on my dog was unprovoked.

My dog was on a lead and in harnass and the staffy came hurtling across the street and latched on to her throat.

The experience was terrifying both for me and my dog and I am not afraid of dogs.

Luckily my dh was there and he bashed the staff over the head with his laptop to get it off my dog. it did not want to let go.

since then I have heard numerous things about staffies that are agressive towards other dogs. maybe not towards children but other dogs definitely.

what happens if the staff goes for another child's dog and other child comes between them. other child will be bitten.

This is a public forum. people are entitled to post their views on any subject on any thread. and if people feel strongly that staffies do not make good pets then they are entitled to say so.

Reputation preceeds them, no way would I have a Staffie if I had children...Infact I wouldn't have a Staffie full stop!...Not a family pet imo.

I hope we don't have a "Our lovely Staffie turned on our toddler" thread!

pucca · 13/03/2007 15:18

MM...Yes we bought a crate for her the other day which she quite happily goes in for some peace i also have 2 cats which she is also very used to already.

MM...Yeh think you right, but i wanted advice from people who had experience with owning a staff themselves.

Have added a pic on my profile of her for you to see.

Thanks again for all your help.

she is very sweet, and very good natured too, infact me hardly know we have her atm, i know that is likely to change when she gets more confident lol, and decides to chew everything in sight.

I do have experience with staffs, I was attacked by one as I have stated.

Your thread title doesn't state that you are asking for advice, it just says "Have just got a staff pup" so I thought this was for anybody with experience of these dogs, I didn't realise it was only for those who actually like the dogs.

I don't think my arguments have been unreasonable. I put forward my opinion. An opinion you can either take or leave. But yes, perhaps you had better make it obvious in your next thread title that you only want biased opinions.

Good luck with your puppy.

WE had a staff bitch pippa from 3 mths old ds was 3 when we got her.
Gorgeous dog, well trained, we did obedience from small puppy with her and showed her as well.
one day out in the park ds then 7 was swinging on a tyre. Pippa was tied to the swing frame while I pushed him
She went for his bum under the tyre and took chunks out of his bum requiring 17 stitches

Never ever had shown ANY signs of anything
We had her put down, it gutted us.
I'm loathe to trust any dog as I thought I knew that dog inside out.
I think it's a salient message for any owner of any dog, you can never ever 100% be sure.

your puppy is gorgeous just be 100% aware when she is around your kids, I could not pull pippa off my ds when she did go for him...

Look pucca, we are not trying to piss on your fire, just giving you all sides so that you can make your own mind up and hopefully always be on the watch with your own dog.

Our advice is well meant.

pucca · 13/03/2007 16:59

Rhubarb...I don't want biased opinions! i was wanted advice on the breed as i have already stated but using comments like you have so far doesn't make me feel you are trying to be helpful tbh

Suit yourself.

I didn't realise pit bulls and staffs were the same . One of ds school friends has a staff and she is lovely. When I took my dog to puppy training there was a staff there and I had a go with training him. He was great. He picked up the training really easily.

A spaniel at our local shops got ripped apart by one off a lead with no owner in sight. It took three men to get it off.One of the men needed stitches and the dog nearly died. This has frightened me and I am scared of walking my dog now. Thank god the spaniel was attacked at the shops with lots of people about.

Do they really have to be kept on a lead always? If so I didn't know that.
