Probably Pucca. Our DD (who was 4 on last day of Feb and is average height) started off on a 11.2 sec a and in April switched to a 12.0 Dartmoor. Anything else and she'd have been "over-horsed".

Depends on what you want to do with it but if you want to take her to little shows, gymkhanas etc best to be in proportion.

Plenty of 12hh and less available and you can always trade up when she gets bigger and stronger and starts wanting to do first ridden.

Hello! all

I had another lesson on Saturday, but didn't get to canter. I was really looking forward to it as well. I have another lesson booked for this Thursday morning (which just happens to be my birthday). I am also having a lesson on Saturday morning, my children both ride at the same time in this lesson. Then Saturday evening as a special birthday pressie to myself, I am going on a hack for a bbq/pub ride - really looking forward to this .

Even better news... it looks like I might be buying my pony earlier than had planned. Initially I said 4-5 years, but I am going to be 36 this week, and why wait another few years, I need to live life now. I know this might sound a little impatient, but given the fact that a) I am going to be doing the course from September & b) my pony will be kept with 2 others that a lady owns in my village on her land. She has many, many years experience and she is willing to lend a hand and I shall be helping her with her horses too. I have an equine vet only 6 miles away.

I have made enquiries about a 4yr old Skewbald Cob Gelding 14.2hh - he looks gorgeous and has the same name as my son - i am sure it is destiny. In the process of arranging to meet, get the vetting done etc etc.

Was it dimpled thighs who had a stint breeding racehorses?

Loshad · 13/06/2007 12:24

I thought dimpledthighs bred some good winners nonono
mummmywilliams = keep us posted, potential pony sounds lovely

Rodeo · 13/06/2007 18:40

Quick post while kids have there tea
Pixel, that sounds really nice - if I'm ever in that area I'll give it a visit! LOL at ds's secret trotting signal
Pucca, my ds (5) is 3ft 6 too and rides a 11.2 which is perfect for him, dd (7) rides a 12.2 and he suits her well too (I have small children!) I suppose it depends what you both want to do, ds is happy to be led around on a lead rein so I suppose the 12.2 would do for him too
Mummywilliams - Wow! Good on you! I'd be a bit wary of getting a youngster though as a first horse, sorry for the negativity but I'd advise you to get something a bit more experienced, the last thing you need is something knocking your new found confidence. I'll butt out now Enjoy your pub ride!
Anyway, time to clear up....

pucca · 13/06/2007 18:43

Thanks guys!

We went and dd tried him out, he is such a lovely gentle pony, maybe a little big but so placid i am quite happy for her to ride him, dd is totally in love! lol

manuka · 14/06/2007 19:16

Hello! We went to Filey a few days ago when it was lovely and hot and dd (11 months) had her FIRST PONY RIDE on the beach!!!! She rode a little shetland named Tilly which was most amusing as dd is called Tali! Tilly and Tali ahh! She looked so cute and she was very excited!
I was very pleased to see that all the ponies on the beach had comfy tack and were well watered etc. Otherwise I would have kicked off big stylee!
At what age can little dd start riding lessons?
Can't wait to see her in little johdpurs and a little hat!!

pucca · 14/06/2007 21:26

Ok, sorry to be a pain

I am a bit clueless actually, but wanted to also ask another question lol.

When i was younger, i was into horses, i haven't been on one at all for about 10 years though and basically what i wanted to ask now, i have put on a fair bit of weight the last couple of years with having my dc (which i am struggling to shift) but at size 20, i am too fat/heavy to ride?

I know it seems a really stupid question, but would love to ride again but don't want to give the horse a damn heart attack!! pmsl.

Bamzooki · 14/06/2007 21:42

Manuka - most of the stables that I asked the
question of started the littlies at 4yo. Some of them quoted Insurance as being the rule maker on that, but haven't bothered to check it out. Dd started at 6, and coped fine at that age with 30 min lessons.
Depends how soon you want to start feeling like you need to set up a direct debit to the yard I guess....

pucca · 14/06/2007 22:01

Manuka...Our local riding school start lessons at 3 YO, my dd started at this age, she is now 3.6 yo and is doing fab! can easily cope with 20 min lesson...prices steep though, i pay £15 for 20 mins.

HTH

manuka · 15/06/2007 15:53

Bloody hell thats not cheap!! Dh will complain! but I think the sooner the better and its a jolly healthy outdoor activity! Tali girl in johdpurs!!!! Can't wait!! She had a ride on my friend's alsation the other day!! She loved it! good job the dog's a big softie.

Pucca, I can't imagine you'll be too heavy at all. Most 6 foot plus men probably weigh more than you and ride horses. There are big cobs and Irish draughts that wouldn't even notice you were on board!
Its most annoying the whole weight gain thing isn't it? I was looking at my newish johds and I can't even get my legs in them now!!! Seriously thinking about going on How To Look Good Naked!!!

Bamzooki · 15/06/2007 17:26

Manuka - the price does vary - my dd's lessons are now one hour (she's 9.5) and I pay £15 for that as a group lesson - but smallish group.

pucca - agree with manuka re riding and weight - it's just about finding an appropriate horse. Also have jodphur fitting challenges since ds was born. I lost over 3st after dd, and was determined not to put it all back on during pregnancy, but did.
Have some lovely Harry Hall jods that just sit and laugh at me right now.......

MrsWho · 15/06/2007 19:54

£10 an hour here, can have treks out at 3 but lessons from 5

Pixel · 16/06/2007 15:43

Hi all! Have just got off the phone after arranging to go and see a pony on Thurs evening . Of course I just twittered on and forgot to ask all the important questions so am now cringing to myself. The seller sounded really nice though and the pony sounds just perfect (apart from being a mare when we've always had geldings)so hopefully we won't be disappointed.

Eve · 16/06/2007 16:00

Hi again.

where abouts are you all and where do you ride?

I am in New Forest.

Was out riding this morning, but schooling, Sunny hates it, refuses to go in an outline! but hes in for a shock we have got a medium level dressage rider to school him for a few weeks over the summer.

When he charges round the field he has a lovely extended trot and canter.. under saddle! lazy... hes 7 and reminds me of getting DS1 who is 7 to do his homework!

Haribosmum · 19/06/2007 20:24

Not been back to this thrwad for a couple of weeks so sorry if I appeared rude not saying 'hi' back.

Well only 3 days until we go back to New Zealand and I get to ride my boy back again. He has been shod, teeth rasped, clipped and will be delivered to the livery yard on Sunday. Ordered a new saddle and new rugs etc on their way.

I really can't wait. Not seen him for a year I hope he remembers me! Can't wait to jump him again and then off to some comps!

manuka · 25/06/2007 22:17

BIG BUMP!

Loshad · 25/06/2007 23:04

mine have sprouted flippers and gills poor things
however idi do a dressage test on sun with the mare and she got 70.5% and was 1st was was quite happy, partic since she can definatley do better than that

MummyWilliams · 08/07/2007 14:44

BIG BUMP!

Pixel · 08/07/2007 19:47

Hi all, I'm still here. It's just that I think we've found our pony at last but didn't want to jinx it by putting anything on here until it was definite iyswim. Hopefully good news soon! .

manuka · 09/07/2007 14:16

I hope it is Pixel! Good luck!

MummyWilliams · 09/07/2007 18:25

Good luck Pixel.

I too am looking. Ideally a Haflinger gelding, 14 - 14.3hh, 6 years old are above or anything else like this but must be able to carry 13 stone.

I check all the horse/pony sale websites everyday. Mainly, HorseMart, Horse & Hound, Horse Deals, Horse Quest, Equine World & New Rider. If anybody knows of any other good sites to look at please, please let me know.

Bamzooki · 09/07/2007 18:33

mummywilliams - I know someone who breeds haflingers - will ask if she has anything suitable at the moment.

looseleaf · 09/07/2007 18:55

MummyWilliams I can understand your dream of having your own horse; I'll be so excited if you find one soon! We have a lovely Highland gelding but my favourite horse in the world died last summer as I'd had her since I was 11; she was an Arab cross and just such a kind horse and would let me lie with her reading when she was sunbathing.

Pixel · 09/07/2007 20:56

Mummywilliams, where are you? My sister sent me this advert. I expect you've seen it if you've been looking at Horsemart already and it is miles away . I'm in Brighton and all the ones I like the look of seem to be in Yorkshire!
