My dog ate...

a pack of raw sausages tonight. I fogot to take the bin bag out with me and when I got home 20 minutes later, the contents were all over the kitchen floor. From what I CAN remember, he ate the sausages and some stale (but not mouldy) bread.
How ill he is likely to be?

I think the sausages should be fine, but our vet told us dogs shouldn't eat a lot of bread, but it probably depends on how much, and I think its bad for them longer term if they eat it on a regular basis rather than making them ill at the time, so once probably wouldn't hurt.

Jaynerae · 21/12/2006 23:02

Sorry Kid - nothing to do with Sausages - but just read this and made me laugh - my dC's put chocolates on the tree the other night, DD is 3 so can not reach high up - I did not want to move them in front of her so made a mental note to move them later as DS 7 quite rightly pointed out ' the dog might eat them!' SHE DID! took the DC's upstairs for bath - came down - lots of foil and string - no chocolate. Very sick dog later in the evening! OK by morning thank goodness. She is always tearing up the bin bags as well if I forget to put them on top of the toy store outside if the dustbin is full. Came home one day to find used sanitary towels spread all over the garden - dashed out with my rubber gloves in case the neighbours looked out their bedroom windows!!!

LadyOfThePoinsettias · 21/12/2006 23:04

i guess the sausages were off if they were in the bin?
if yes, he may throw up. mine have done when they have stolen something off. otherwise fine.

naughty doggie!! lol

MerryPiffmas · 21/12/2006 23:08

my dogs eat each others poo. I'm sure even slightly off sausages will be fine.

kid · 21/12/2006 23:08

the sausages were best before 21st Dec, I knew I wasn't going to eat them today so threw them out.
I figured the fact that they were raw might be a problem for the dog. He is such a scavanger. I left a carrier bag with toilet roll in a few weeks ago, the stupid mutt ate some of it!
He also ate through DS's lunch bag to get to an almost empty packet of crisp.

Jaynerae, I can just imagine your shocked face to finding the sanitary towels in the garden. Followed by the mad rush to pick them up.

kid · 21/12/2006 23:12

my dogs also like to shred pooed nappies all around the house if they get the chance, eating the poo first of course.
they also steal my knickers from the washing basket and chew the gussets out. they chew the toes out of socks and if my toddler is having some 'nakee' time and he has a poop accident they eat that too. they are so strong once they home in i cannot stop them! lol
one of them once ate my whole pair of knickers and the elastic was stuck hanging out of her bum. we had to take her to the vet to have it surgically removed!!

MulledWino · 21/12/2006 23:14

PMSL at "chewed gussets"

southeastastra · 21/12/2006 23:15

argh ladyotp!

poinsettydog · 21/12/2006 23:28

bllleeeeeuuurrgghhhh. Dirty dogs.

I think they have iron stomachs. I once saw a mangy neighbour's dog fast-trotting round the streets with a mouldy pack of edam in its gob.

12yeargap · 22/12/2006 00:03

My dog ate a set of shark jaws. Honestly. Beat that.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 22/12/2006 00:08

My DP's parents dog had 3 - yes 3 gastric torsions operated on (medical miracle apparently). This was because he regularly ate the contents of the bin. On the last op he had (poor thing has died now - of a heart attack not due to his eating habits), the found the string net you get wrapped around joints of meat, a bottle top, a carrier bag and a yoghurt pot - amongst other things.

He often and regularly ate other dogs shit, which, as an Old English Sheepdog, I'm sure you can imagine - his facial hair was pretty unpleasant after.....yick!!!!!!!!

snig · 22/12/2006 00:10

my friends dog ate a sock, the first thing he knew about it was when he noticed a purple thing hanging from the dogs bum. my friend just pulled it out, he didn't wear it again though.

DingDongDraculaOnHigh · 22/12/2006 00:10

He will be fine
dh's parents dog ate

a whole stilton
most of a turkey
a quarter of squidgy black

amongst other things and he was fine

snig · 22/12/2006 00:14

Dingdong that must have been one very stoned doggy!

Joannie2 · 22/12/2006 11:34

He'll be absolutely fine - dogs bury raw bones and then dig them up to eat months later.

Jaynerae, I would keep an eye on your dog for the next couple of days. The effects of chocolate consumption on a dog can take upto 72 hours to show itself. I have known several dogs that have become seriously ill after eating chocolate - eating chocolate can lead to death depending on how much and the size of the dog. He should be fine though considering he brought most of it up.

Chandra · 22/12/2006 11:38

My dog ate a full pack of my birth control pills.

kid · 22/12/2006 11:42

My dog keeps weeing now. He did 2 last night and 3 this morning. Lucky we have laminate flooring.

Chandra · 22/12/2006 11:47

Probably he drank lots of water to compensate for the salt in the sausages...

poinsettydog · 22/12/2006 12:36

lol @snig's sock anecdote!

Isn't it just amazing what manky dogs'll eat

Are you sure they were not drinking too?

mammaduck · 22/12/2006 13:30

A friend of mine's dog once ate a pack of firelighters. What amused me was her DP smokes and she was really adamant that he shouldn't smoke near the dog, just in case!

The dog later ate a full pack of philadelphia cheese (presumably to settle his stomach) and was fine!

Jaynerae · 22/12/2006 21:10

Joannie2 - thanks for that - I assumed she would be alright if still ok by the next morning - I'll keep an eye on her for a few days. Appreciate the info.
