Collect 7 year old somali tomorrow called Liam - just don't like him having a proper name anyone think of anything that sounds like Liam that he might be okay with?????

Am so excited & nervous as when I went to visit he cried & meowed the whole time so am not hopeful of quiet nights at first.......

Plus I've never had a pedigree before.......

TIA

When we adopted our cat, she was called Clive. Spent a drunken evening with a few friends suggesting names. She ignored all of them except one. We tested her by coming up with others but mentioning the 'one' again and it was very clear that there was only the one word she reacted to. Worth a go!

Siamese are very vocal, btw, it's not something that will change. When ours got to be an old lady she used to yowl on the stairs in the middle of the night for some company...

lima - but maybe abit girlie?

AllBuggiedOut · 24/11/2006 20:53

How about just changing the first letter and making it Kiam? Or Miam?

Or rhyming with museum?

Good luck!

Whooooosh · 24/11/2006 20:55

Kia?
Keo?
Leo?

tigertum · 24/11/2006 20:59

What about Schnarf (like from the Thundercats) it's different and would be funny to stand at your back door shouting SCHNARF! when you call him in at night. Well if I had a cat, that's what I'd call it and as I am allergic anyone is welcome to the name. Does anyone else find it strange when pets get given adult names? My friend had a horse called 'Mathew' and I always founf that so odd.

northerner · 24/11/2006 21:05

Leo
Lima
Llama?

We just got a kitten and have had huge debate about her name. Ended up with Tallulah.

zephyrcat · 24/11/2006 21:11

A cat called Liam??! A siamese called liam??!

You could just call him Li or Lili! - probably used to it and feels more siamese!!

Aero · 24/11/2006 21:14

Ours (adopted from a mner) were called Ronnie and Charlie. We thought about changing their names, but at 7 & 8 years old, it soon became clear that they were very used to their names, so we decided not to change them after all. Strangely, we now feel they totally suit their names, despite not being ones we'd have chosen (R in particular) ourselves, and they've grown on us much more than we expected them to (the names that is - not the cats of course - we adore them totally ).

RTKangaMummy · 24/11/2006 21:18

Aero I was thinking about Ronnie and charlie the other day and was going to ask you how they were doing

Aero · 24/11/2006 21:35

They're 'deffo brill' RT! (to quote a well known phrase ). They bring much joy to our family.

Is it a Somali, rather than a siamese??

How about Marley.

As in soMALI, but still has the Li sound of LIam.
Rather good I thought.

They are beautiful cats and not noisy like Siamese, but just as sociable.

How come he's coming to you at 7?

BuffysMum · 25/11/2006 20:28

Well he's here - I collected him from his foster home (someone who baords for a living and fosters voluntarily). He cried all the way home and the first hour in the house - he's only just stopped! He's fawn silver & warbles when he eats!!!!!!!

None of us like the name Liam even if he is a champion pedigree not sure why - we shall see what happens! Our old cat was called Rubber (not named by us) which was fine as he "rubbed" constantly for attention plus it was a cat name.

His owner/breeder has taken ill and RSPCA have been helping rehome her 15 cats! The foster mum had 2 of her pedigree somalis (william & Liam) and 2 cross somalis (Thomas & Mouse) but the crosses came as a pair only and we didn't feel we could home two.

He is beautiful but would still like to rename him - keep those suggestions coming!

expatinscotland · 25/11/2006 20:30

How about Warbler?

BuffysMum · 25/11/2006 20:34

belive me warbler has crossed my mind.....we nearly keeled over laughing - hope it's a nervous reaction to new house not at every mouthful for evermore......

MrsJohnCusack · 25/11/2006 20:36

am PMSL laughing at LIam - might as well call him Colin or Noel and be done with it. Or Limahl...

he sounds lovely though.

expatinscotland · 25/11/2006 20:36

How about the Somali word for cat?

Don't know what it is, though.

BuffysMum · 25/11/2006 20:50

Dp has suggestions of

Dune (really good but dp can't say it easily!)

Merlin

Gandalf - too topical we think at the mo!

OP posts:
MrsJohnCusack · 25/11/2006 20:50

here's where we find out that Liam IS the somali word for cat...

can't find it right now but have discovered that 'Mau' is the egyptian word for cat.

BuffysMum · 25/11/2006 20:52

Somali were bred from Abyssinian (sp?) cats.

He's finally thinking about sitting still and has just done the most smelly cat fart!

OP posts:
MrsJohnCusack · 25/11/2006 20:53

ah

in somali Bantu 'ycaaycuur' is cat. i think you'll ALL have problems saying that!

Merlin is a great name for a cat - one of my cats I had to rehome a couple of months ago when we moved here was called Merlin and he is the loveliest cat ever

expatinscotland · 25/11/2006 20:54

Mau is a good name, though.

I knew a cat called Chairman Miaow.

MrsJohnCusack · 25/11/2006 20:55

I like Mau too. generally I'm a fan of comedy names for cats such as Colin etc., but LIam? nope, can't see it.

LadyTophamHatt · 25/11/2006 20:58

What about Umbro.....they make footballs IIRC

expatinscotland · 25/11/2006 20:59

Get out of here, you cat hater !
