What is the breed of your cat and how smart is it?

Along time ago my parents had a cat (probably tabby) and we could play Hide and Seek. We are thinking of getting a cat in the future, may be in a year time or later. So please tell me about your cats. The reason why I am asking is because tabby breed is not amongst the 10 smartest cats in the world purrfectcatbreeds.com/top-10-cats/top-10-smartest-cat-breeds/ but for us he was quite smart. So I wonder whether the cats in the link are really that smart. I guess they are also very pricey.

3 mogs, all girls and all rescue kittens. Two of then are fairly smart (aside from one having a penchant for chasing her own tail) the other very very stupid.

Had the brother to one of the smart ones but he unfortunately died aged 3. He was apparently the runt of the litter and the softest and loveliest but also dimmest cat we have ever known.

We have a beautiful white persian, she's very very affectionate and is by my side wherever I am in the house! She's very daft though and extremely clumsy. Lovely breed :) I would love a Siamese too!

Needapositivechange · 16/10/2014 11:48

Mine is tabby and not really clever, he is really needy, follow us all around, wake us at 5 am to be let outside, piss under our bed if we don't let him. Shit or piss in the corner of the bathroom if something stresses him out, last week we had builder ! But he is really affectionate, likes to spoon in bed with us, welcome my husband when he comes back from work. I wouldn't exchange him for anything !

Black with black stripes sounds like a black smoke. All black cats have a tabby pattern that you can't see, because it's black too. But in black smokes there are white bases to the hairs on the bits that don't have the tabby stripes/swirls, so the tabby pattern is visible (esp when the cat's moving) even though the whole cat still looks pretty much black.

Grey with grey stripes would be a blue tabby. Not to be confused with a silver tabby, which is silvery grey with black stripes.

girliefriend · 16/10/2014 11:57

Needsa if that is a picture of your cat - I wouldn't call him a tabby!! He looks like my boy cat who is black and white. (He is gorgeous though Wink )

girliefriend · 16/10/2014 12:04

Have just discovered my black and white boy is officially a bicolor cat and actually termed as 'tuxedo' here he is
He is well posh Wink

teenagetantrums · 16/10/2014 12:12

I have brother moggies , one is smart, plays fetch, can open cupboards, the fridge and the cat pouches if I leave them out, the other is a bit thick to be honest, does not understand playing at all, gets all confused if you move anything around and regularly falls off things. The clever one is a black and white cat and no one else wanted him as his brothers and sisters were all pretty looking tabbies, so we took him with one of the tabbies.

Tanacot · 16/10/2014 12:16

I have a black and white moggy and he is remarkably dim. Regularly leaps at closed windows, loses his food bowl if it's moved six inches, has never killed anything more challenging than a large piece of string (he was so proud, bringing that home!).

I love him. He's the best. Sorry, I know you all think yours is but mine really is.

We are still working on the cat flap. He is 12.

Needapositivechange · 16/10/2014 12:29

And what is she ???

GerundTheBehemoth · 16/10/2014 12:43

Need - non-pedigree cats are sometimes known as moggies. A tabby cat is one that shows a stripy or swirly pattern, basically. Stripy is a mackerel tabby, swirly is a classic tabby. (There are also 'ticked tabbies' which only show clear stripes on their faces - they are rather rare though.) The pic you just posted is a long-haired brown tabby-and-white.

The tabby pattern can be shown by any cat, moggie or pedigree, though some pedigree breeds aren't allowed to be tabby (eg Korat mentioned above has to be a solid blue cat). But you can get pedigree tabby Maine Coons, Norwegian Forest Cats, British Shorthairs and lots more.

tabulahrasa · 16/10/2014 13:20

I think there is somewhere that calls moggies tabbies, maybe America?

AmeliaPeabody · 16/10/2014 13:49

We had a Rex with lovely tabby colouring. Specifically a grey smoke tabby point (tabby markings on head, feet and tail only).

I thought Americans called them (non pedigree cats) domestic shorthairs (or moggies of course), just as we do. Interesting. I've never heard 'tabbies' used in that way, personally.

MrsCharlesBrandon · 16/10/2014 13:51

I have two moggies. The black is as dumb as a box of hair, but can open doors, and the 3 legged tabby is bright, vocal, and getting old so seriously grumpy.

The tabby is part Siamese, i'm sure of it. Although she will sleep on my feet or behind my bum, then get annoyed when i have to move.

MrsCharlesBrandon · 16/10/2014 13:54

Needa you have a pair of moggies there, one a bi-colour shorthair (B&W) and one bi-colour tabby longhair.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 16/10/2014 13:54

sssssssssssssssssssssssssss

^ my moggy typed that
not sure what it means but I'm sure its super intelligent cat code for something

My persian is very clever only she is just too posh to show us

tabulahrasa · 16/10/2014 13:55

Wiki under Domestic shorthair says...

"The term tabby cat technically refers to a coat pattern, but is also often used as a general term for cats of this sort."

But not where it's used, annoyingly, lol.

I would use moggy or DSH, well mine happens to be a tabby as well, but I've just got it in my head a sort of vague memory of it being used instead of moggy somewhere, but I'm not sure where, lol.

micah · 16/10/2014 14:05

I don't know whether mine is the stupidest or cleverest cat on the earth.

He looks dozy, falls over all the time, can't find food unless it's in front of him, and is just generally stupid. He couldn't survive without a human carer.

However he has us all (and most of my neighbours) trained to within an inch of our lives. All he needs to do is miaow in a certain way and we know exactly what he wants.

He can do tricks. But he will only do it if there's something in it for him. It's more he's trained us to do the tricks.....

optimistikcolouristik · 16/10/2014 14:55

Oh, so many interesting stories and lovely pictures too! I am off to school. Will read the thread this evening.
Has anyone ever had a Cornish Rex? They look like Spynx but with fur. Do you think such strange looking cats get accepted outside by other cats?

See you later! and thank you everyone for making this thread interesting!

MrsVamos ours wouldn't tolerate being inside! He's King of the street, all the others cats terrified and he rules with an iron paw. He has got himself lost a few times though, as his territory is so huge he couldn't find his way home Hmm

Cirsium · 16/10/2014 15:07

Very large grey tabby moggy. Clever in a manipulative way, such as having no time for the dog except when he wants something. Then he cuddles up to the dog, rubs around him, etc because he knows I think it's cute and will give in quicker. The only time he has brought prey home, despite neighbours telling me they see him hunting lots, is when he was on a diet. Jumped through an open window with a live mouse and let it go in the bedroom for a few days. Sure it was a 'well that's what you get for starving me' protest.

Also seems to have some notion of time, I used to live in a second floor flat and take him down the communal stairs and out the back door. The door had to be shut behind him. If I said, in jest, "I'll let you in in an hour (or half hour, etc) he would always be sat waiting when I went back down. If I said nothing it would take ages and lots of calling for him to appear from really far away.

Lweji · 16/10/2014 15:14

Do other people's cats understand television?

I think mine does.

I have no idea of breed, he's all black, from a black and white family.

I think he's quite clever.
He can open the wardrobe's sliding doors and follows me around when I play hide and seek with DS. He'll pat me to get cuddles and he knows how to annoy me to get food.

teenagetantrums · 16/10/2014 15:58

oh forgot to add my stupid cat will watch Tv and try to catch other animals on it, clever cat just ignores it clearly knows its not real...

TranquilityofSolitude · 16/10/2014 16:52

You see, I think mine is even too stupid to notice that things move on the television. He doesn't even face the television when he sits on the rug. It's nice that you think your cat is too clever to be taken in by it. Perhaps I'm the one who is stupid!
