Get the one that is cutest and friendliest?

Astrophe · 26/08/2006 09:42

girls are less likely to be aggressive. I would def get a girl. girls need more excersize as they get fat more easily (or at least labradors do)

Astrophe · 26/08/2006 09:43

yeah, and true about the bits as well...yuck!

chonky · 26/08/2006 09:44

Agree with scummy - I'd choose the best puppy from the litter - going on health and personality i.e not too forward, not too retiring.

Scoobydooooo · 26/08/2006 09:44

Hmm but you also have to think about girl dogs have periods....

Girls are messy when having a season but can be neutered at 5-6 months before periods.

Boys are lovely and although get there bits out when excited etc.... you learn to ignore it.

What breed is it?

Chandra · 26/08/2006 09:51

When he sees him ask him to hold puppy as a baby, the puppies who show their tummy are normally very docile, while the ones that refuse point blank... will need more work in the discipline area.

We have a boy and a girl, the boy (who unashamedly showed his tummy) has been so easy to train. The girl, who didn't, has taken a few hours and three dog trainers to learn what the other one learned with 2 biscuits!

Astrophe · 26/08/2006 09:52

if you get a boy and get it neutered (which you def should whether boy or girl unless planning to breed, so as to avoid lots of unwanted abandoned puppies)i think they are not agressive.

Chandra · 26/08/2006 09:52

Wasn't the staffordshire bull terrier in the European list of dangerous breeds? I know is not in the british one but I'm sure we have had a thread about that some years ago.

Believe me, you would want the dog to have it too! (especially after they start using your cushions for sinister purposes! )

Scoobydooooo · 26/08/2006 09:56

We had a staffy & we read alot up on them it does say they are very good with children, we had a male staffy & he was a lovely dog, the only thing i will say is if you have young children they are very powerful dogs.

I agree you need to get them neutered.

Chandra · 26/08/2006 09:59

I think any breed is fine as long as you know how to handle it. Have seen some nasty Chihuahuas behaving worse than rottwailers, so, it's just about the "education" they get. If you have a soft side and tend to let them to get away with everything, stay clear of most dogs!

Chandra · 26/08/2006 10:02

I think the following is very useful, it tells you how to "test" the puppy.

I've read that staffies have a good reputation for being great with kids too.

magnolia1 · 26/08/2006 10:05

Oh excellent!! I have staffies, have just homed 6 lovely puppies

I would definately say a girl, a little less jumpy and although not always the case they are normally better with other dogs.

I paper trained my puppies that were bred here but when I got the 2 I have now I never used paper just put them outside every hour and after sleep, eating and play.
Reccommend crate training, Staffies love a good chew and will not ask permission to Eat what ever they want including things like plugs and dining room tables

Ask Sparklymeiow too she knows lol

vnmum · 26/08/2006 10:05

the best way to house train a puppy in my opinion is with a cage. its not cruel but they learn to keep themselves clean and its less mess. they also come in handy for when they start chewing, for your stuff and also for their safety. get a cage the big enough that they can lie down and turn around in comfortably and put the bed at the front and paper at the back. then during the night they generally use the paper as they dont like to sleep where there is dirt. this is also useful when you need to go out so you dont come back to mess everywhere. my dog loved his cage and would put himself to bed in it when he wanted to sleep.

when they are not in the cage you need to take them out to the toilet as soon as they wake, after theyve been playing and after theyve eaten. this is better than getting them to go on paper as you dont need to then retrain them off the paper and into the garden. if they start to do something in the house use a loudish noise to distract them \then quickly pick them\ up and put outside. give a treat when they do something outside and lots of praise. its important not to shout when they have an accident inside as they dont connect the two and just think youre shouting for no reason. just ignore the accident and clean it up. dont rub their noses in it, that is just cruel.

most of all it means keeping a very close eye on them all the time to watch for signs they want to go. the signs to watch for are sniffing and circling.

i used all these methods and my puppy was asking to go out at the door within a week and was fairly clean overnight within a few weeks, obviously they get better at holding their bladder as they get older.

I feed mine once a day, I try to use dry food because it is easier to keep things clean and because it helps to keep their teeth in good condition. (Says Chandra, whose dogs lost half of their teeth after indulging them in wet food for six months! -I'm mortified.... they are old but the teeth were perfect even for their age before I switched!)

magnolia1 · 26/08/2006 10:08

Mellowma, they need feeding 3-4 times a day until 6 months then 2-3. I still feed my adult dogs twice a day.
At this stage puppies will eat anything so the best time to introduce them to whatever you want to feed them on. Just mix it with whatever food they are already on and give less of that each day until on the food of your choice.
We give biscuits as it creates firmer poos (sorry TMI)
