My neighbors cat has been missing for 3 weeks. They have just gone on holiday & he came back today (a bit battered)

They went at the weekend, we came back from a weekend away on Monday. They had left us their keys with a note saying they had given up hope - but I had promised to pop round.

Went round this morning - kicked the cat flap to check they had left it open, just about to leave again & heard a yowling. The poor cate was trying to get in but couldn't. I opened the back door & had to help him in - back legs dragging. He was so emaciated! & desparate for food but we took him to the vets before feeding him.

They think he has poss cracked his pelvis & been stuck somewhere. I can't keep him at our house as we have other cat & large dog. Have had to lock him in their kitchen, find him a bed, leave radio on & make regular visits. He goes back to vets on Thursday to see if recovering as too weak for an Xray just now. It may be that he gets constipated if pelvis heals wrong!

Neighbors are abroad for 2 weeks - hope he is well for their return.

Awwwwww good that hes back though. You are a GOOD neighbour:)
Can you contact them?

hulababy · 30/05/2006 20:43

Well done you for taking such good care of im, poor little cat. Your neighbours are lucky to have you there.

charliecat · 30/05/2006 20:43

On 2nd thoughts, I hope youve got the right catGrin

Milliways · 30/05/2006 20:46

I phoned them to see if he's insured (he's not!). They were soo happy that we have him & have promised to repay the vets bills (which will prob be quite high) - but we would have paid them anyway as couldn't leave him. I just feel guilty that he's on his own as if he was mine I would be cuddling him all night! At least he is now safe inside - but a shame he has 2 weeks before his "mum" is back.

Bless you for doing that, regular checks and food, litter tray and warm bed are best - keep him locked in.
Good neighbour award to you
Think our neighbours would bury our cat alive if they could ever catch her :(

Milliways · 30/05/2006 20:49

We had to buy him a litter tray at the vets today, & I found an old cat bed of ours as he only sleeps on their sofas - which they wouldn't apreciate as he was covered in ticks (& prob fleas) so vet has treated him & have confined him to kitchen for time being. Last time I checked he was curled up in the bed. However, he finds it hard to walk around the kitchen as slippery & he drags his back legs a lot.

hi,
i was just wondering how he was and wanted to say not to let him walk around at all.
If his pelvis is broken then just imagine how painful it must be. And if it needs to fix, walking around and maybe moving the fragments won't help too much either.
maybe put him in a cupbaord type area, where he has a food and water bowl and a litter tray and no wlaking to do. This will help him alot over a period of time.
And please moniter his urine output- sometimes if the pelvis is damged the nerves to the bladder are too and this can cause problems urinating.
Rest, rest and more rest!
And some nice food too

BTW you are very kind to take careof him like this for your neighbours Smile

Milliways · 01/06/2006 10:00

Vet said he should be ok in kitchen. She manipulated him a lot & he didn't show signs of pain but it "felt grating like" so prob healed. I have put a carpet mat under his food bowls so he can stand without slipping over. He is weeing but only just beginning to poo - constipation is something was told to watch for.

He is v.affectionate considering not mine. I go round a few times a day & let him curl up on my lap. He is v. happy in the bed I have found him as well.

We have a vet appt at 3:30 today so fingers crossed.

now I hate cats but this is a lovely story

xx

arfur · 01/06/2006 17:36

Milliways you are so kind! Dont get too guilty about him being on his own a lot - probably quite good for him to be kept quiet while hes recovering and hes obviously loving it when you do make a fuss of him. God Im so soft almost makes me cry this sort of thing!

lilibet · 01/06/2006 19:31

How did you go on at the vets?

what is the cats name?

I'm a sucker for cats Smile

and aren't you lovely!!!

pesme · 01/06/2006 19:55

you are a seriously kind neighbour.

Milliways · 01/06/2006 20:30

Well, he seems to be doing ok, major concern is if pevis narrows when healed leading to constipation or other probs. He has "been" a very little bit, but is having trouble - prob aggravated by no food for so long. This evening he kept getting back in litter tray, straining, collapsing & looked like he was going to stay there until I lifted him out - twice! Maybe that's where he'll sleep tonight!

I have moved his bowls nearer his bed & kept him in one small kitchen.

He is booked for an X ray on Tues, but vet won't do it unless she speaks to his owner first so they will call her. That will be another £120 + they will neuter him at same time for an extra £18.80. Neighbours are coming back to a serious bill! After xray, will know long term prognosis. He has a definite deformity of pelvis, very lopsided when sitting & one foot drags a lot. If all goes well he will have to be kept indoors for another 6-8 weeks.

I come back in & give my cat a big hug! (Sooo glad he is not using a litter tray as well - forgot that joy!).

Will let you know how he gets on - & his name is Toby btw.

Milliways · 12/06/2006 20:29

No! They gave me nice wine AND biscuits AND waffles AND sweeties AND a cheque for the whole lot!

and LOTS of Thank Yous. They are also transferring him to our vets as they were impressed with care & facilities (3 operating rooms, own X-ray machine, separate cat waiting room etc etc).

So, happy people all round :)
