End British Summer Time and make it easier for kids to sleep in the summer

I am fed up trying to put kids to bed in UK summertime. It gets dark at 10.30 and kids don't sleep when it's bright daylight outside. There is no reason for the clocks to go forward. We should stay on GMT. There is no logical reason for British Summer Time. We stick with it because our politicians can't be bothered to change it. There is currently a UK parliament petition to get rid of the clocks going forward and keep GMT all year. I have attached the link. Please sign it. Thanks

Petition: Stay on Greenwich Mean Time

I would like the UK to always remain on GMT, with no use of daylight saving time.

I shall start a petition to stay on BST permanently. I love the longer evenings.

I live in Scotland and my kids go to sleep in the evening because they're tired, but the 1yo had started waking up inconveniently early (i.e. before I was ready!) until I fitted some blackout blinds yesterday and then had to go in and wake him up at 7:30. OP I just got a temporary stick-on blackout blind from John Lewis for £12 and it's lovely and dark in there now.

I love the late nights in summer- we have black out curtains in all the bedrooms

minnienono · 19/06/2025 11:06

It’s the opposite in my opinion, too light in the morning! Buy blackout blinds like I did, problem solved.

the reality is if you live above about 45 degrees the light difference between summer and winter will cause some issues whatever the clocks are set to, you just need to make reasonable adjustments to make life as easy as you can. Try living in Scandinavia!

Norugratsatall · 19/06/2025 23:01

No! The long light evenings are the best bit about summer. It’s all too short as it is.

cheesycheesy · 20/06/2025 09:47

I love the long light days. It improves my mood massively. No way am I wanting to change that and I have 2 young children. Just sort your routine out!

Mercurial123 · 22/06/2025 19:55

OP's petition has 89 signatures ...

BendingSpoons · 22/06/2025 19:58

I'll sign a petition for BST all the time. Why waste the daylight when people are sleeping? It already wakes me up early when it's light at 4am ish. I wouldn't want it light any earlier.

LlynTegid · 22/06/2025 20:02

I have not signed it.

I would prefer BST year round, though GMT year round would be my second choices and what we have now is third.

What we have now leads to increased road crashes in November, has an impact on people's health with the sudden plunge into winter, and I think more use can be made of light in the afternoon. I think it would lead to a small decrease in energy use as well. Since industry such as mining reduced, far fewer people start work at say 6am any more.

Other way round. Let's have BST all the year round. I hate it getting dark so early in winter - and especially hate the change

Wish we still had the laughing emoticon.

Do you know, I miss it so much!😔

I love it getting dark at 4pm. Nice and cosy😊

signed it. Ive wanted this for a while. Nothing to do with children. I just think it makes little sense in our modern world to mess around with the clocks. Too many accidents happen.

here’s the evidence. You’ll find it if you google it: :

“Road traffic collisions increase during the two weeks following the switch from British Summer Time (BST) to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in autumn, with an average increase of 278 collisions. This is largely due to the earlier darkness, which can impair visibility and driver performance, leading to more accidents, particularly during rush hour. While there is a decrease in collisions after the spring switch to BST, it's not as significant as the autumn increase”

Buy some bloody blackout blinds and stop enforcing your children's needs on everyone else.

Long may the long June nights continue.

This.

Which is surely an argument to keep BST and not change to such dark evenings in winter!

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 22/06/2025 23:34

As others have suggested remaining on BST has far greater benefits to the economy. And arguably society in general. But nothing is going to change in our life time.

CrushingOnRubies · 24/06/2025 13:52

Yabu. I like the lighter evenings. Means I feel
like doing stuff when I get home from work more. Also every kid who grew up in the uk has dealt with/ adapted to the clocks changing twice a year, why can’t yours?
