End British Summer Time and make it easier for kids to sleep in the summer

Concernedparent1234 · 18/06/2025 22:43

I am fed up trying to put kids to bed in UK summertime. It gets dark at 10.30 and kids don't sleep when it's bright daylight outside. There is no reason for the clocks to go forward. We should stay on GMT. There is no logical reason for British Summer Time. We stick with it because our politicians can't be bothered to change it. There is currently a UK parliament petition to get rid of the clocks going forward and keep GMT all year. I have attached the link. Please sign it. Thanks

Petition: Stay on Greenwich Mean Time

I would like the UK to always remain on GMT, with no use of daylight saving time.

Buy some bloody blackout blinds and stop enforcing your children's needs on everyone else.

Long may the long June nights continue.

DeSoleil · 18/06/2025 22:46

As suggested, use black out blinds and let us enjoy our lovely long light evenings.

Yes, pretty much this.

And I speak as a mother of 3.

You’re taking about your kids- not all kids.

To be fair mine don’t sleep whether it’s daylight outside or dark, but they have blackout blinds so the light outside doesn’t make a difference to our lack of sleep.

We do enjoy light evenings though, especially when we go out for walks at 8pm when it’s getting cooler.

Seawolves · 18/06/2025 22:49

Wouldn't they just wake earlier due to the light in the morning? As above, blackout blinds are your friend.

NerrSnerr · 18/06/2025 22:52

Did you write the petition OP? I have just looked and it’s just what one person ‘believes’. If something like this is going to gain traction then you really need some statistics behind it.

Don’t be ridiculous.

Am805463 · 18/06/2025 22:54

Nooo I love the summer nights! I just used blackout blinds for my kids but I’d hate to be stuck with dreary dark nights all year round.

JassyRadlett · 18/06/2025 22:56

If the light is stopping them sleeping at 10.30 it'll stop them sleeping at 9.30 just as easily. And then wake them up at 3.45am...

Agree with the others and get some blackout blinds. It's dark enough for the vast majority of the year in this country. Let us have our days in April when we're not coming home from work in the dark, and our handful of long evenings int eh summer when we can go for walks and sit outside and generally enjoy the outdoors.

lostinthesunshine · 18/06/2025 22:56

No!

TomatoSandwiches · 18/06/2025 23:00

Wish we still had the laughing emoticon.

IfYouDontWantMeIllJustDeemYouGay · 18/06/2025 23:02

No thanks. The world doesn't revolve around your kids.

BitOutOfPractice · 18/06/2025 23:02

Yes that’s a great idea. Ruin everyone’s lovely light summer’s evenings for your kids.

Lisbeth50 · 18/06/2025 23:04

The hours of daylight/nighttime will still be the same, regardless of whether the clocks change. Putting the clocks forward means it's lighter in the evening, which is better than it being daylight extremely early in the morning.

AmyDuPlantier · 18/06/2025 23:04

It’s practically still daylight in Scotland and my teens are asleep with their curtains open. The birds are singing. It’s lovely! Give over.

Smartiepants79 · 18/06/2025 23:05

Everyone else has said it. I have kids, they have blackout blinds and curtains. We sleep just fine.
I love late, light nights.

NigellaAwesome · 18/06/2025 23:08

I’ve just been working on the garden until half an hour ago. It’s glorious! I think we should keep BST all year round.

As everyone else has said, use blackout blinds.

pernice · 18/06/2025 23:25

lol no summer nights are the best

Legomania · 18/06/2025 23:47

Yeah, no

cheesycheesy · 18/06/2025 23:51

Most ridiculous thread I’ve ever read

Spanielstails · 19/06/2025 07:41

Shutters or black out blinds?
I ave friends who close all their shutters at 7:30pm to get their kids to bed 🤣
I actually don’t mind that we can do things in the evenings with our children but maybe I will feel differently when they are in proper school.

Notupmyalley · 19/06/2025 07:42

Wear your kids out more so they are actually tired.
Use blackout blinds.

How old are your kids @Concernedparent1234?

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 19/06/2025 07:44

Blackout binds, no screen time for a few hours before bed and tire the children out.

MoistVonL · 19/06/2025 07:46

Because them waking up at 3:40am is going to be preferable, is it?
