Scary government EHCP changes and petition

Hopefully all of us have already signed the petition which has been started by Special Needs Jungle to ask the government not to cut SEN support for children. There have been leaked suggestions that they are planning to remove all EHCPs in mainstream education. If anyone hasn’t signed yet and wants to then the link is here https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/711021

This doesn’t just affect children - EHCPs are active until the person reaches 25 and opens up supported internships and college places. You can’t access them without. So what happens then?

This really is the government throwing all children under a bus, as well as the teaching staff. If those who need support simply aren't given the help they need then it will be practically impossible to teach effectively. All children will lose out. I'm so disappointed, I really thought education was more valued than this.

Keir Starmer is such let down. It’s disgraceful.

@OnceuponatimethenThanks for the update I had not heard about the possibility of abolishing sendist and the right to appeal. That is appalling! Over 99,000 now keep sharing everyone.

Ok, but what are they replacing it with? I am open to listening to the proposals before protesting, as the way things are is unsustainable. But any replacement has to be protective and supportive.

I will take a look at the report, thanks.

Surely abolishing it altogether would actually be disability discrimination.

This government really has it in for disabled people and I hate them for it.

I am a life long Labour voter but I can’t reasonably vote for them again.

It depends what they replace it with. Abolishing it and offering absolutely no alternative costed and supported system would be awful, yes, but I doubt that's the plan. After all statements were abolished and replaced with EHCPs.

It's my area of work and it definitely needs reform. I want to know what they are suggesting, how that will work, and how children will be supported, before I can decide if it's a good plan or not.

Well obviously they would change the means of access?

100k achieved ❤️❤️❤️

Excellent news.

Onceuponatimethen · 12/06/2025 19:58

@SmotheringMonday I think if we look at PIP people are right to be worried. They are cutting access to PIP for many adults with SEND without having put in place any clear alternative support for them. I think we would be unwise to assume there is a good plan, any more than there was a good plan for supporting pensioners in fuel poverty, which was why they had to u turn in that.

So excited to see the rate of signing seems to be increasing and that the 100k point has been reached. Let’s keep doing this!

Another life long Labour voter (and member!) here. They will lose my vote forever if they remove EHCPs from mainstream kids.
