To find UK emergency vehicle sirens too loud?

Hulabalu · 11/05/2025 22:32

They aren’t this loud in France or Netherlands for example.
i believe they’ve got louder with new sirens fitted at some point over the years designed to be felt as well as heard within modern insulated cars.
I have found this petition on line & will sign.
Please sign if this bothers you too.

( if link won’t post then google 38 degrees petition for regulation of emergency sirens )

Yabu

I can count on the fingers of one hand the amount of seconds in a month I’ve found sirens too loud to be comfortable.

Cars are far better insulated and drivers are far less observant than they should be these days on our roads.

There’s always one isn’t there. A siren can be a siren without being bone shatteringly loud. Here’s an alternative! Stop in car stereos going past a certain volume so ordinary sirens can be heard. If you haven’t had any ear troubles or witnessed the torture of a loved one with them, then think yourself blood well lucky.

You know I think the problem might not be motorists with loud stereos as much as fucking stupid pedestrians with headphones in or glued to their phone. And I say that as someone who is a pedestrian more often than a motorist.

I remember arriving at a pedestrian crossing in the centre of town early one evening. There was a siren and an emergency vehicle was approaching very quickly. All the motorists had clocked this and pulled over. Most of the people waiting to cross had also noticed. Apart from one young woman with earphones, in staring at her phone, completely oblivious to the outside world who just walked out in to the road. The ambulance was able to stop but everyone around just looked on incredulous as she strolled across the road totally unaware of what she had just done.

Loud sirens are fine with me. They are what they need to be. Definitely won't be signing.

Abominolom · 11/05/2025 23:14

Yep. Always one…

@Itsoneofthose OH THE TORTURE OF EAR TROUBLES (versus the torture of being trapped in a car wreckage. having a heart attack, suffering serious burns, needing an ambulance, being violently attacked…)

Why is it that mumsnetters are totally unable to see the grey area in a debate. I not saying ABOLISH EMERGENCY SIRENS, I am saying they to NOT need to be EXCESSIVE. Can you understand what is being said here and the difference between saying no siren and not so loud siren. All the Karen’s resorting to hyperbole. Yawn.

Motomum23 · 11/05/2025 23:21

I live on a main road and am plagued by sirens day and night... and even I'm mot daft enough to complain about it.

Completely agree re headphones.

I have read the petition content.

I will not be signing.

A siren is a siren. At any level that it can be heard by the people who need to hear it it will be loud, and it can hardly be a soothing calming sound can it??

It is a temporary (if frequent) disturbance of the peace for the greater good.

Ridiculous.

(If drivers of emergency vehicles use their sirens improperly, that is a different matter. I always notice that in our S London traffic they turn them on when they need to, a quick blast when traffic has a chance to move)

you wouldn’t like to know quite how many times I’ve experienced exactly that actually.
And no that’s not what I said- did I suggest the government enforcing anything? I mentioned the stereos being limited as I imagined you’d be the exact kind of Wally driving around ignorantly with music blasting. But ultimately yes, the sirens are TOO loud, and yes this is an issue for those with any hearing difficulties (which if you have a read, is far more complex than being just a bit deaf!!)

Of course you imagine that. @Bundleflower doesn't agree with you, so you attribute all kinds of "appalling" behaviour to her 🙄

Blackcountrychik83 · 11/05/2025 23:23

I think they should be quieter after a certain time at night . There isn’t so much noise generally so they don’t need to be so deafening . They scare the life out of you when they just approach and boom full sirens next to you as you’re walking down the street,

😂 I’m not that stupid that I don’t understand what you were trying to say. You’re just being ridiculous. I think the “Karens” are the ones that think emergency vehicles should hush their presence a little for the sake of their own precious little eardrums.

Thanks for the psychoanalysis @Isittimeformynapyet very helpful

For anyone who's wondering, the petition "content" contains the same amount of actual evidence as this thread i.e. none.

Isnt It interesting how a shared experience can make us differ? I’m grateful we could be heard coming.

But you’re suggesting that if people had quieter music then sirens could be quieter. So if sirens are turned down tomorrow how will there be confidence people will have music quiet enough? Trust alone?

It’s quite an extraordinary leap and deduction that I drive around with music blaring though. That part is utterly illogical.

Apao · 11/05/2025 23:25

Yabu, (and yes I’ve read the petition) if you’re struggling with noise sensitivity, you can get loops or similar to reduce the sound. But people already don’t move out of the way for blue lights always and hearing them from a decent distance away is helpful, you can plan a pullover etc, blue lights rapidly approach when moving fast, giving people some time to decide safely the action to take is a win all around.

Again, did any one say hush the sirens? Really? Has it been suggested anywhere in the thread?

I read ‘of course’ like Shrek. Unrelated but probably typical of me @Itsoneofthose ?

Edited as in textbook Wally behaviour I thought donkey was the Scottish one for a second.

NPET · 11/05/2025 23:27

I think it's because we use the American style sirens. Last time I was in France they were still using the old fashioned da-da ones.

Yes we switched to those at some point I read - the old fashioned sirens were tolerable compared to current ones

I might have to try those loops

You said sirens should be “not so loud,” I said you wanted emergency vehicles to “hush their presence a little” 🤷‍♀️

Regardless, I’m finding you very amusing. Carry on.

One of my DC wears them often. Really helps makes the ‘noisy’ noise tolerable in a world that has to exist around them.

Supporting posters who call people ‘Karens’ because they have a different view is not likely to increase signatures, OP.

Well there’s no need to resort to derision and mockery is there?
