Currently GP surgeries can use £1.4 billion for 2023/24 to fund up to 17 roles to help patients... as long as they are not practice nurses or GPs. Yes, you did just read that. The fund being used to finance roles to help with a shortage of GPs and practices nurses cannot be used to reduce that shortage.

Many surgeries are having to rely on ARRS funding to employ staff. I, and many other GPs believe practice nurses, salaried GPs and locum GPs should be added to this list of 17 roles. Please sign this petition if you agree:

Petition: Allow ARRS funding to be used for practice nurses and GPs

The Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS) has made available to GP practices £1,412 million in 2023/24 to employ people in 17 new roles. We would like GP practices to also be able to use this money to pay for practice nurses, salaried GPs and lo...

There are GPs who are struggling with mortgage payments and using food banks. It’s so crazy that at a time of GP shortages.

The government have come up with this INTENTIONAL scheme, so that the GPs we do have are not employed but instead FREE money is given to practices to employ NON doctors with No medical school training- a 2 year course! And these non doctors are seeing patients in
surgeries INSTEAD of the GPs who are
not able to obtain the opportunity to work. The PAs etc are directly replacing GPs.

i know that I’d much rather my parent/child or loved one looked after by a GP with a minimum of 10 yrs training, than someone who has done a 2yr course, cannot prescribe and needs to be supervised by a GP!!! (Oh the irony!)

it’s a really scary thought that the government are pushing GPs out and many will quit the NHS or leave the country.

where will that leave the public? With no choice but to see PA’s and accept that level
of ‘care’.

Shamalambam · 22/12/2023 17:14

There are literally thousands of GPs out there who are out of work. I have family members who are out of work opportunities overnight. Believe me, this is a serious issue. Let’s just hope they don’t all just mass emigrate- so the only option you’ll have is to see a PA in your surgery on the NHS or go for private healthcare! Be careful what you wish for. I would hate for my family to emigrate, but to be honest if they are not valued here, then I absolutely do not blame
them. .

Shamalambam · 22/12/2023 17:17

There is an almost overnight shortage of work affecting some areas more than others ie Yorkshire and North West are badly affected and the GPs with young families cannot take up the commute or commitment to work at significant distances, without huge disruption to their families. This is a very real problem for GPs who rely on locum
income to live.

RSA · 22/12/2023 17:23

Yes 3 -4 post there only x
not enough for the number of GPs qualifying or qualified recently

Shamalambam · 22/12/2023 17:27

This is not true at all! There are hundreds if not thousands of GPs who are out of work. Primarily those who were locums and were not in a regular job, as the regular hours are 8am-6:30pm - but more like 8pm - so carers or single parents etc who cannot commit to these jobs you are referring to, would do locum work around thier commitments! It is these GPs that have been hit the hardest. I for one, would much rather be seen by a GP, who has a wealth of experience and is medically trained via 5 years at Med School than someone with little experience with a 2 yr ‘course’. I wouldn’t feel as safe. The numbers of errors from
the non doctor practitioners are going to be significantly higher as they are just less well educated and trained. That’s a fact. This workforce does not replace Experienced and trained GP’s in my opinion at all!

tokesqueen · 22/12/2023 17:51

I'm a part time practice nurse. My part time colleague retires next year and I'm out in three. We've just had another retire early. Can't recruit despite advertising.
It's a timebomb.

Practice nurses are worth their weight in gold, they are knowledgeable and experienced! However there is no incentive to become a practice nurse vs the new PA roles which only take 2 yrs training and ARE PAID MORE than PRACTICE NURSES! It’s is unreal! So there it is.

I think the issue is practice are not employing locus GP, however, I heard from partners that often these locum GP are not taking partnerships or salaried post. To be honest, I noticed there has been an improvement with ARRS roles.

Shamalambam · 23/12/2023 13:38

so you are suggesting that you are in agreement with the government, to only use the funding they have provided to practises to employ anyone OTHER than a GP or a practice nurse? So you would want your medical care to be delivered by a PA with 2 yrs training vs that of a GP who will have gone to 5 yrs of medical school and at least 5 years of training after that minimum. Interesting. . . Good to know that you have so much confidence in the limited training that they are given and happy to have your loved ones managed by them. I do not have the same confidence in them as you. Especially after more and more fatal errors are coming to the fore. Seems they lack clinical experience but not confidence and they are 100% working outside thier competence. This screams safety issue to me. Time will tell. . .
