I think Secondary schools should go back in September but with compulsory mask wearing and lashings of hand sanitiser.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 09/06/2020 12:59

I've signed.

Greysparkles · 09/06/2020 13:00

Have signed.

Our children have been so badly let down and forgotten. It's fucking outrageous

If you want to stay home with yours, do that.
The rest of us should have a choice

ChaoticCatling · 09/06/2020 13:02

Signed. My 14 year old is already attending under keyworker provision but he desperately needs to be back being taught in normal classes.

Completely agree with you.

I'm only interested in my son's mental health

Do you mean he’s unhappy and complaining, or is he becoming a case for CAMHS?

Is there a petition for the scientists who know more about Covid 19 than randoms from the internet to make the decision about when schools should open? I’d sign that.

No idea, why don't you Google it!

I'm only interested in my son's mental health which, as an only child, is rapidly deteriorating and with no health conditions he would be at minimal risk of catching anything. As a mum, and a teacher currently working from home as my year group isn't yet back, I'd be more than happy to take the risk going back to normal schooling for all given that IKEA, the pubs, McDonalds are open, people are pretty much ignoring social distancing when you go out shopping etc so why are our children being made to suffer - no parks, no friends, no education, no swimming, no library, no museums - but hey we can go and wander round IKEA and as of 22nd June sit in a pub garden. Where's the science in those decisions?

Glad you are all low risk and have the privilege to make these decisions. I’m a teacher and a Mum also but one of mine is clinically vulnerable. His surgeon has said he can’t go back to nursery yet, wish I had the luxury of worrying about his socialisation.

I am in work full time and I don’t disagree with schools opening. I’m not moaning about it before anyone jumps on me.

ILoveMyMonkey · 09/06/2020 13:11

@Useruseruserusee. I'm really sorry to hear about your son, that must be hard on you all.

I'm with you all the way op.

Many kids are going to be damaged for life by the lockdown. Many kids are being damaged every day by being in abusive or neglectful households.

In happy supportive households many kids are doing fine but even in these situations many aren't because emotionally and mentally they need more stimulation and social contact that even the best parents can't provide.

3 months is 1/24 of a 6 year olds life. That's a hell of a chunk to be missing out on their right to education. I can remember how long 6 weeks used to seem at the beginning of the school holidays. It's not a long time to an adult but it sure is to a child

ILoveMyMonkey · 09/06/2020 13:12

@HopeClearwater

He's sad and very fed up but not complaining and not a case for CAHMS.

Thank you, I appreciate the supportive post.

As a teacher your child can access key worker provision at school.

Send them in.

ILoveMyMonkey · 09/06/2020 17:35

shellysheridan

His school have made it very clear they won't take kids if you are working at home - which I am and they know it so I can't just send him in - unfortunately.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 09/06/2020 17:38

Maybe if you send a petition against covid the virus will disappear?

WoWsers16 · 09/06/2020 17:46

They may have made it very clear however if one or more parent are a keyworker you have the right to use that service so instead of fighting a system that is trying it's best and will not be able to take all the children before summer- maybe focus your energy on your child's school that are doing the dis service to your child- not the government.

ILoveMyMonkey · 09/06/2020 17:57

@PineappleUpsideDownCake

Wow do you think that'll work 🤔👍

OP posts:
ILoveMyMonkey · 09/06/2020 17:59

@WoWsers16
I think the school are doing the best they can with limited staff, resources, space so will follow their rules. And it wouldn't solve the problem for all the non key worker children who all have a right to a proper education.

OP posts:
Raaaa · 09/06/2020 18:01

I'm all for getting back out there and getting my DD back to nursery, I'd rather catch the damn virus and be done with it. I'm at my wits end trying to work full time from home. The virus won't be going anywhere for months/years anyway

WoWsers16 · 09/06/2020 18:03

So if you think they're doing their very best with limited staff, resources and space for key workers - how one earth do you think inviting the whole school back is going to help and realistically be done!

AlternativePerspective · 09/06/2020 18:43

I am prepared to be flamed for this but IMO all the talk of MH and children being damaged for life is completely over dramatic in most instances.

I’m not talking about children who already have known MH conditions and are under treatment, but people who say that a child missing their friends is going to damage them for life, or missing out on a few weeks education.

As society generations have come through far worse than this in the past and haven’t sustained lifelong damage because of it.

Children these days have become over entitled and used to always getting their own way and IMO need to learn some resilience.

Yes, it’s tough. It’s tough on everyone.

But in the beginning most were saying that they hoped schools would remain closed until September, and now with just a couple more weeks of the term left keeping them home for a few more weeks is hardly going to lead to lifelong damage.

WoWsers16 · 09/06/2020 18:56

Alternative perspective - totally agree with you- children can be so resilient - I think more often than not it's the adults passing their insecurities n to their children (not in all cases!!)

Boxachocs · 09/06/2020 19:35

I agree also. If I were to take on the same mindset as the OP I’d say that my children are coping fine not going to school, so they shouldn’t open further. That’s a bit selfish though isn’t it to only consider my own situation? Schools will open to everyone when it’s deemed safe enough for everyone involved.

RuffleCrow · 09/06/2020 19:39

What a load of rubbish. Based on the idea that children should go back to school because they get it less severely. Yeah, that's fine, because children live in houses and within families solely populated by other children Hmm

600 odd signatures. Not looking good op.

GinWithRosie · 09/06/2020 19:53

I am a 56 year old, Year 1 teacher, with asthma...so got it ALL stacked against me! I'm not allowed back yet as I'm classed as vulnerable (asthma and age too I guess 🤷‍♀️) but I'd go back tomorrow if they'd let me...in fact I have actually begged my head to let me back!! I've even asked my GP to give me a letter to say I'm ok to work (he refused!)

So I've signed the petition 👍

Working from home is actually killing me...I'm working more hours now than I did pre-Covid (and I worked a lot of hours then!) I want to go back!! I miss my gorgeous class, I miss my fantastic colleagues and I HATE that so many children are not in school!
