Nor / peak

KaptenKrusty · 07/03/2020 11:24

What does everyone do with their kids then when they have no one to look after them? This is getting ridiculous now - if the virus is going to be here for a while we need to just continue living our normal lives ! People will get sick - most will recover and be fine! If you are in the category of people likely to die from it then maybe take extra precautions / work at home, pull your own kids out of school.

But for the majority of us it’s fine to go on as normal!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 07/03/2020 11:57

“Fine to go on as normal”

Not if you have health issues or are elderly. But they don’t count obviously🤔 and also no one has immunity to it either, so it is spreading like wildfire

mac12 · 07/03/2020 12:04

Genuine question to those who are so anti-school closures - why do you think China & Italy, which both tried to keep economy going & business as usual then decided to implement school closures?
What do you think will be different in the Uk?
Why will we be able to ‘take it on the chin’ and they couldn’t?
Do they not care about economy? Do their medical workers not have children & childcare responsibilities?
Do they not also have financially vulnerable populations? Do they not have self employed people or people who rely on state support?
What special & unique features mean we will have different outcomes?

MarieQueenofScots · 07/03/2020 12:10

That's why we have people trying to convince themselves it's just a cold; that preppers are deluded; that working life must go on

At the moment - until advice is otherwise then yeah, working life goes on.

And I’m not in a position that school closures etc or widespread closures will affect my line of work from home. But realistically until a plan is in place it is foolish to do anything but go about your normal life with decent hygiene!

KaptenKrusty · 07/03/2020 12:11

I can’t stop my whole life, going to work and earning money etc in case I spread an illness - I’ve got bills to pay! Are we meant to hi so shit everything down indefinitely - how will that work - a smaller number of people are at risk - so be easier if they stay in rather then the rest of the population!

AlternativePerspective · 07/03/2020 12:19

Except it isn’t spreading like wildfire is it?

20333 people tested
164 positive results.

Out of a population of 60 million people.

All the “life as we know it is over/we are all going to catch it” hysteria is nothing more than speculation at this stage.

In fact if you read the official thought process on this instead of resorting to panicmongerers.net the thought is very much that although a spike is expected, the spread is very much also expected to slow down considerably over the next few weeks/months.

As for people saying that we can’t go on as normal if you have an underlying health issue, of course you can.

People should be washing hands anyway so that’s a given. Anyone with an underlying condition would avoid others with cough/cold/flu symptoms as a matter of course. If you have an underlying condition then you will already be aware of symptoms where you need to seek help.

And there’s nothing that says that if you have an underlying condition you are going to die, just that you may be at greater risk of complications.

The only line I might draw is over going abroad, but I’d probably say that anyway, not least because I wouldn’t want to get stuck in some hotel room somewhere if the area was suddenly quarantined, not to mention being stuck on a cruise ship for weeks on end .

But as I have no plans to go abroad any time soon then yes, life goes on as normal.

And yes, I have a serious underlying health condition - heart failure, cardiac arrest in the summer, needs a heart transplant but healthy enough at the moment to not yet have to be on the list.

I know all too well the symptoms to look out for and the complications. Ironically heart condition was as a result of the flu 3.5 years ago so... been there, done that...

I have numbers for cardiology should I feel concerned. if any of my friends/family come down with colds/flu they avoid coming near me anyway so nothing changes on that score.

But i have no plans to remove my child from school or to isolate myself among a sea of toilet rolls and hand sanitiser.

As an aside, the majority of tinned/packaged foods people are suggesting contain enough salt to be detrimental to someone with heart failure so given I don’t buy those anyway I don’t intend to do so now.

What does everyone do with their kids then when they have no one to look after them? This is getting ridiculous now - if the virus is going to be here for a while

What does everyone do with their kids then when they have no one to look after them....and they're too sick or in hospital (or dead) so can't look after them?

The whole point of preemptive action would have been to prevent the virus being here for a while. It's still possible to slow the spread - and therefore lessen the impact if measures are taken asap.

I can’t stop my whole life, going to work and earning money etc in case I spread an illness - I’ve got bills to pay! Are we meant to hi so shit everything down indefinitely

You won't have a choice in stopping your life if you get sick. This virus has left young healthy people bed-bound for several weeks. Some young healthy people have been hospitalised, some have died. You're not immune from its effects if you're young or healthy.

cologne4711 · 07/03/2020 12:24

I'll share this on FB and implore people NOT to sign it.

Why do some overanxious parents think they know better than the Chief Medical Officer?

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 12:24

I'm happy to do what it takes to slow the peak.
With an Easter holiday approaching, I think it's the perfect time to add a week at either end to close schools at least.

Surely we should all be wiling to compromise to slow the spread? What if we don't and we can't access health care in hospitals? We can't get oxygen?

Your delirious in bed for a few days, how will you look after yourself and sick dc then?. I'd rather be at home isolating in good health.

welshfishwife · 07/03/2020 12:25

If school closures happen who will look after the children of frontline NHS workers?

cologne4711 · 07/03/2020 12:25

Singapore has locked down

It has not. parkrun for example, has restarted in Singapore.

cologne4711 · 07/03/2020 12:27

If school closures happen who will look after the children of frontline NHS workers

or indeed farmers, delivery drivers, medicine manufacturers - oh and loo roll manufacturers! And anyone working for the NHS eg cleaners and receptionists.

Kokeshi123 · 07/03/2020 12:27

I really cannot see that happening, we would effectively be in lockdown and that is something that I think many in society here would struggle with.

Everyone on the planet hates being in lockdown, but it's something that gets done when the deaths have started to mount and people are getting alarmed (if not for themselves then for their elderly parents/smoker friends/diabetic sister etc.). Once you get to that stage, people start to accept that this is going to have to happen. It sucks but you just have to deal with it.

Of course people have to earn a living. So what happens is that everybody who can work from home, starts doing so; this makes life safer for those people who can't.

welshfishwife · 07/03/2020 12:27

@cologne4711 indeed.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 12:28

It's not like we don't have other scenarios to look at.

Italy is in chaos and crisis.
It's spreading like wildfire.
People are loosing their loved ones. They can't access beds and help.

Do people want to wait until we get to utter diabolical crisis stage?

cologne4711 · 07/03/2020 12:28

And what do teen dc know about how viruses spread

Probably quite a lot, as GCSE science, including biology, is compulsory. And some will be doing A level biology.

AlternativePerspective · 07/03/2020 12:29

What does everyone do with their kids then when they have no one to look after them....and they're too sick or in hospital (or dead) so can't look after them? they have to go into temporary foster care.

KaptenKrusty · 07/03/2020 12:30

Lolz it won’t happen !! Your all being crazy! I’m going to Japan on holiday as usual and working as usual - the world won’t close down indefinitely - especially not here ! There has been fuck all new cases today - fuck all new deaths! Keep wishing for it to get worse though and hide out with your precious tinned food and loo roll and stop your kids getting an education. 😂

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 12:31

BTW the petition doesn't have a click link.

It was over 100,00 when I last saw it. So the have to consider the debate.

Sleepyblueocean · 07/03/2020 12:31

I honestly think closing most schools, and only keeping some open for key workers (NHS staff, police etc), would be the best option.

So how practically does that work?

AlternativePerspective · 07/03/2020 12:32

You won't have a choice in stopping your life if you get sick. This virus has left young healthy people bed-bound for several weeks. Some young healthy people have been hospitalised, some have died. You're not immune from its effects if you're young or healthy. as is the case with any other illness.

KaptenKrusty · 07/03/2020 12:33

@Awkward1
Exactly!

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 12:33

Teens I'm with worry and talk abouts the virus but non wash hands before eating.

They still share drinks, hug each other, take bites of each others food, they pay using finger print systems with no gel available.

Seeline · 07/03/2020 12:35

If pupils are 'marjed absent' for their GCSEs and A level exams the normal process is they don't get a result unless they have completed 25%of papers. If no exams are happening, then they will have no results. Great suggestion by PP.....
