M&S Little Shop plastic promotion - petition

hbowyers · 16/07/2019 09:25

Our petition against the M&S Little Shop promotion has now reached 2000+ signatures in 4 days and we need your help.

We have all watched Blue Planet and War on Plastic and been shocked by the scale of plastic pollution. Yet now M&S are giving away mini plastic versions of the plastic rubbish we are trying to get rid of!

75% of the items are new virgin plastic and cannot be recycled (except by taking them back to the store - how many people will do that?). M&S are supposed to be reducing plastic, but appear to have binned "Plan A" with this wasteful promotion.

As a mum, I am appalled that a trusted brand with eco-credentials is running this promotion and have boycotted M&S until they see sense.

If you care about the environment, the planet and our kids - please sign the Petition! chng.it/qxGNBJ7Z and take a look at the website we are currently setting up littleshopoftat.co.uk/ for more information.

I would imagine all the stock has already been produced. What do you want them to do with it?

hbowyers · 16/07/2019 09:37

we want them to stop production, commit to not running this promotion again and to responsibly dispose of the stock.

Totally agree with you - I felt sick when I first saw these vast piles of utter tat. Signed.

The petition link to Change.org is [[http://chng.it/ZqVGSsLQKx ]] The Little shop promo teaches a terrible message about sustainability and is the complete opposite to that of M&S Plan A. Our Oceans are being polluted with plastic please sign and share this petition

Really sorry, but we've got to move this over to Petitions.

What's the point of them? They look to small to be used as toys, and pictures show them in a display case, which I can't imagine any adult actually wanting. Confused

Sparklingbrook · 16/07/2019 09:52

M&S have said this-

M&S Little Shop collectables are made from a combination of cardboard, foil and plastic. All the packaging they come in is recyclable, and all the paper and cardboard used is approved by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

M&S Little Shop collectables are made to last and to be shared. However, if your child no longer uses them, we have a plan in place to dispose of any unwanted collectables. Collectables made from cardboard can be recycled at home. For the plastic and foil collectables, simply bring them to the M&S Foodhall information desks and we will recycle them to help make children’s playground equipment as part of our plastic take-back scheme.

hbowyers · 16/07/2019 09:52

It is the M&S new Little Shop campaign giving away free, 75% plastic, miniature replicas of their food items, eg plastic milk bottle. You get one free with a £20 spend on food. Been on TV ads and ads on social media.

OP posts:
hbowyers · 16/07/2019 09:53

they are 75% plastic which can only be recycled by returning to the store.

ATrampsVest · 16/07/2019 09:56

OK, so they are basically toy items of some of their foods? Like the kind that you would get in a doll's house or play kitchen?

I mean, I hate the plastic tat that my kids seem to accumulate, but why just the focus on M&S? Why not Kinder Eggs, or any other blind bag toy, or party bag tat etc?

hbowyers · 16/07/2019 09:59

there is a lot unnecessary plastic everywhere, but M&S have stated that they will reduce unnecessary plastic, then produce these to giveaway, which is unacceptable

“When Little Shop has ended, leftover collectables given back to stores will be recycled into children’s playground equipment as part of our plastic take-back scheme“

I wonder what % will be returned to store for recycling vs % which will languish in toyboxes and coat pockets? Very short sighted of M&S.

Maybelle15 · 16/07/2019 10:12

They are not free, if your child wants to collect them and you do not normally shop in m&s it will cost you £500 to collect all 25. You are also not guaranteed to get all 25 so in that £500 you could get multiple double ups. I hav asked if they will do a swap event and no stores (i have asked 3) can give any information on this. We have 2 of the little items and 1 is cardboard 1 is plastic. We are using them for our dolls house but i do not think m& have done enough research i to this promotion. I can not see their target market. In store i was told under 3s, however the items are so small I wouldn’t suggest under 3s. The items are also too small for play kitchens so really unless you have a dolls house I can’t see the appeal and would think children will get bored quickly with this promotion

hbowyers · 16/07/2019 10:18

Maybelle15 it says on the packets that they are a choking hazard, only suitable for over 36 months, so very strange that the store are saying that they are for under 3's. Mind you even store managers are telling customers they are all cardboard when 75% are plastic (as confirmed by M&S in The Grocer). The percy pigs are made of plastic foam in a bag that looks just like the sweets - irresponsible
