Please help support motion for women to meet peacefully

Hi everyone, I am looking for a wee bit of help to support Jenny Marra’s motion (S5M-17604) in the Scottish Parliament for the right of women to be able to meet to discuss their rights in peace. The motion makes reference to last week’s events in Edinburgh, where Julie Bindel was subjected to a horrible attack.

If anyone would be willing to write to their MSPs using writetothem.com, I’d be very grateful. If you want to, use the following wording or feel free to use your own. The title should be anything related to the petition itself (the title, the number and/or the general subject). It’s drafted for a woman to send, so men need to adjust it!

Maybe say if you are an academic or have any special reason for writing. But if you don’t have time to do that, just send it as it is!

I am writing as a constituent to ask you support motion S5M-17604 in the name of Jenny Marra.
The motion notes that a well-attended discussion on women's sex-based rights took place at the University of Edinburgh on 5 June 2019; asks MSPs to agree that they believe universities should be safe places for complex and sometimes controversial discussions to take place; and also that they strongly believe that there is no place for violence or threats of violence towards women engaging in public life in Scotland. You may know that after the meeting one of the speakers was subject to an attempted assault.
Please support the right of women to meet to discuss their rights peacefully and respectfully, as was done on 5 June, without the fear of violence; and the right of universities to host such discussions, even when these are the subject of controversy. [As a woman,] I look to my MSPs to place beyond doubt that, whatever position they take on the issues here, they place fundamental value on my ability to take part safely in this debate and on the ability of universities to help those discussions take place.
[Best wishes/Yours sincerely - add your name]

Thanks so much to anyone who is able to do so. Every e-mail adds to our case.

Right, I’ve just checked and as far as I can see, still not one of mine has signed it. I am not impressed. And hearing that those clowns in the Green Party are still bleating on, it’s fair to say I’m actually raging! Angry

Whatever Cole-Hamilton's views on trans rights, why would he not be able to condemn violence against women?

Mbwashenzi · 12/06/2019 14:13

Ive just seen a clip of Cole-Hamilton. Standing under a rainbow brolly saying it's an outrageous lie that trans women pose any danger.

Mbwashenzi · 12/06/2019 14:17

If any MSPs, other than the presiding officer and ministers, refuse to sign, we need to think about how to make them see what they are doing.

Are they really not prepared to say that women have the right to engage in public life without fear of violence?

Alison Johnston and Kezia Dugdale are the only two of mine who haven't signed and are eligible to do so.

Cole Hamilton never misses a chance to virtue signal...

Whereareyourshoes · 12/06/2019 19:43

I watched the clip of Cole-Hamilton outside Parliament. Interesting choice of words from him. 'We have to strangle these arguments'. Yes, must silence those women who dare to ask questions about their sex based rights.

Harvie was there too, rabble rousing.

Sorry about the spamming - not sure what happened there!

I think we need to show some love to the Labour women who made this possible, along the lines we did for Joan . Not sure whether to start new thread but I think cards from anyone in whole of UK whoever supported Labour to Jenny, Johann and Elaine would be a fantastic idea

Whereareyourshoes · 12/06/2019 23:08

I will start writing thank you cards to them tomorrow.

Mbwashenzi · 13/06/2019 07:07

I'm sending cards to all the women, of whatever party. And possibly Andy Wightman because I suspect Chapman, Harvie, Greer are giving him hell.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 13/06/2019 07:24

Joan's speech here. It's a belter!

Also pleased to hear Tavish Scott being so firm on women being heard. Nice contrast to A Cole H!

Hi all

We're just moving this thread over to the right topic. Flowers

resisterpersister · 13/06/2019 12:27

Since when was this the petitions and activism board?

Didn't it used to be the petitions board? (And full of tumbleweed).

Where was this before it was moved, was it FWR? Surely it's better there?

This isn't about a petition, it's about a motion in the Scottish Parliament.

BetsyM00 · 13/06/2019 17:01

I agree. @MNHQ is it possible to move this back to FWR please?

Gagagardener · 01/12/2024 13:33

Bump for info re request to MNHQ for petitions thread
