Please help support motion for women to meet peacefully

Hi everyone, I am looking for a wee bit of help to support Jenny Marra’s motion (S5M-17604) in the Scottish Parliament for the right of women to be able to meet to discuss their rights in peace. The motion makes reference to last week’s events in Edinburgh, where Julie Bindel was subjected to a horrible attack.

If anyone would be willing to write to their MSPs using writetothem.com, I’d be very grateful. If you want to, use the following wording or feel free to use your own. The title should be anything related to the petition itself (the title, the number and/or the general subject). It’s drafted for a woman to send, so men need to adjust it!

Maybe say if you are an academic or have any special reason for writing. But if you don’t have time to do that, just send it as it is!

I am writing as a constituent to ask you support motion S5M-17604 in the name of Jenny Marra.
The motion notes that a well-attended discussion on women's sex-based rights took place at the University of Edinburgh on 5 June 2019; asks MSPs to agree that they believe universities should be safe places for complex and sometimes controversial discussions to take place; and also that they strongly believe that there is no place for violence or threats of violence towards women engaging in public life in Scotland. You may know that after the meeting one of the speakers was subject to an attempted assault.
Please support the right of women to meet to discuss their rights peacefully and respectfully, as was done on 5 June, without the fear of violence; and the right of universities to host such discussions, even when these are the subject of controversy. [As a woman,] I look to my MSPs to place beyond doubt that, whatever position they take on the issues here, they place fundamental value on my ability to take part safely in this debate and on the ability of universities to help those discussions take place.
[Best wishes/Yours sincerely - add your name]

Thanks so much to anyone who is able to do so. Every e-mail adds to our case.

Thanks for this. I've already written to my MSPs, some of whom have signed. I've written to thank those who have, one of whom was a surprise!

resisterpersister · 11/06/2019 14:39

Shared on Facebook.

Afrojules · 11/06/2019 14:54

Thank you both. I just checked the list of those who supported it. Not one of mine did. I will be letting them know I am not impressed. Angry Should be interesting to see if they give any reason why they didn’t.

Fantastic, thank you. Looks like more are still being added. Apparently Murdo Fraser signed but isn't listed and the scotsman says even Richard Leonard who was backing self ID a few days back is going to do it!

I've written to my MSPs to say thank you if they signed and chivvy the ones who haven't!

Some great quotes here from Jenny Marra

How can you find out the signatories?

Afrojules · 11/06/2019 16:19

Thanks Alice, I saw Murdo F’s tweet. Fingers crossed there are more to come. Someone has tweeted that no one from the Green Party has signed. Haven’t double checked but it wouldn’t surprise me. Patrick Harvie really doesn’t like women, does he?

Youllhave, I saw it on For Women’s Twitter page.

Afrojules thanks - I just had a look. My SNP constituency MSP has signed it I see.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 11/06/2019 16:27

That's good! Check the other 7 too!

youllhavehadyourtea · 11/06/2019 16:28

Some have, some haven't!

I shall be writing.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 11/06/2019 19:14

Really pleased to see that Andy Wightman has decided to sign after the nonsense this weekend. I may have to throw a few quid at his legal crowd funder.

Scot Greens are batshit crazy and I don't trust them not to throw their most principled MSP under the bus.

Afrojules · 11/06/2019 20:27

Yeah, I saw that he’d signed. Wonder what the evil overlord, Patrick, had to say about that?

Thanks everyone who has already written to their MSPs. I think now is a good time to remind them that we make up half of every constituency.

I have written, and in my letter I asked my MSPs to get back to me and explain WHY if they did not sign. I shall bloody well chase them down if they don't sign and don't reply! And the others - 37 signatures so far, which means 92 haven't signed. Though I think ministers don't/can't?

FloralBunting · 11/06/2019 21:04

I'm not in Scotland or, indeed Scottish, so I can't, but I just need to register astonishment that such a placid, basic thing as being able to meet peacefully to discuss your rights should be something that needs to be asked for anywhere in the UK right now.

AncientLights · 11/06/2019 21:34

Totally agree Floral. Well, I suppose we all do. It's unbelievable it's come to this. I'm not in Scotland either so am outside the remit of this. Best of luck with it.

Manderleyagain · 11/06/2019 21:58

I am in england, so thanks to everyone who is writing to their msp. It is positive (though like others I agree that it's ridiculous that this is needed). When will it be heard, or does it need a certain number of backers to be discussed?
I have never heard of the msp who is behind it. Does anyone know anything about her? Is she already in this discussion/debate or is she looking at it purely from an academic freedom pov (which is good in itself).

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 12/06/2019 09:03

Manderley, I believe that Jenny Marra came to the Edinburgh University meeting last week (Johann Lamont and Elaine Smith definitely did too). Johann L has increasingly been finding her voice on this, so great to see the Labour women backing each other.

Richard Leonard made some ludicrous comments the other week in support of self ID. Not sure if he's just looking for attention or didn't really get it / wasn't worried that it would affect him. Hopefully the strong women will set him right!

A fair few more on there today! I think sending cards - especially to the more beleaguered ones is a really good idea.

Waiting with bated breath to find out what excuse Harvie and Greer will give for not signing.

Lumene · 12/06/2019 09:08

Thanks. Can’t see any reason for someone with democratic values not to sign this. Really pleased to see Ruth Davidson is supporting it.

Mbwashenzi · 12/06/2019 10:40

Last time I checked 38 had signed. Given that presiding officer and ministers don't sign, that means 102/129 MSPs could sign, and 64/102 haven't. I'm keeping a list, I'm checking it twice...
If they don't sign, that is tantamount to saying that universities are not appropriate forums for the debate of difficult ideas, and that women have no right to meet and speak without fearing violence.
They have to be held to account!

Whereareyourshoes · 12/06/2019 11:49

I have emailed my Constituency MSP (Alex Cole-Hamilton) asking him to support this motion. I have also emailed my Regional MSPs - either asking them to sign or thanking those who have already supported the motion.

Afrojules · 12/06/2019 12:08

Does anyone know the best place to check who has signed? I’m desperately hoping some of mine have by now.

OP posts:
Mbwashenzi · 12/06/2019 12:49

I will eat my hat if Cole-Hamilton signs.
Or indeed any of the Greens other than Andy Wightman.

BetsyM00 · 12/06/2019 13:11

I hear that Cole-Hamilton, and Patrick Harvie, have just given 'trans rights' speeches at the Scottish Trans Alliance protest outside Parliament. As has Angela Constance, though hers was more along the lines of her job meaning she has to listen to both sides and have the uncomfortable conversations.

Afrojules · 12/06/2019 13:21

Thanks Betsy Flowers
