My friend was killed and didn't get justice. Will mumsnetters help to stop it happening to someone else?

In 2015, nearly 5000 people were killed of seriously injured in hit and runs in London alone.

This number is on the rise. Leaving a fatal accident scene benefits the perpetrator as if they are caught they face a much lesser sentence of Leaving the Scene rather than Death by Dangerous Driving.

My friend was one of those killed and his family are trying to change the law so that leaving the scene of fatal hit and runs is a comparable offence and remove the once incentive to drive away. He was left to die in the road aged 36 and the man who killed him served just 61 days in prison.

This crime can happen to anyone of us. Children have been killed in hit and runs. Elderly people have too.

Children have been left without a mother or a father because of this crime.
For those who callously drive away and leaving someone dying in the road to get a sentence of days or weeks it's vile.

Imagine how you'd feel if this happened to a loved one? I really hope it never happens to anyone reading but it could.

Please help change this law so that justice can be done for victims and their families.* *

I don't understand how fleeing gets you off the hook for being charged with dangerous driving? I get that if you're drunk then they can't prove it if you flee and sober up before they catch you. But otherwise I don't see how fleeing benefits you?

LiquidCosh · 19/06/2018 08:54

I think is because they can't then prove that you were drunk, on drugs, using a phone, speeding or otherwise driving dangerously CanaBanana

I get that they can't prove you were drunk or on drugs because it's too late to test you. But don't see how they can't prove you were speeding or on the phone etc? Surely they can still take your car and phone record, and there's just as much evidence as if you'd stopped at the scene? Not being funny I just genuinely don't understand how evidence of dangerous driving is erased by leaving the scene?

Whatsmymethod · 19/06/2018 09:19

It just doesn't make sense does it CanaBanana.
I can't get my head around it either .

How can they prove you were on your phone? I left it at home. One of the DCs was using it. I only used it after the accident. Oops I’ve just dropped it in the bath.

I know someone who crashed into a hedge whilst drunk. He walked home and picked the car up the next day. Could have killed someone but no consequences at all.

Good luck OP, I signed from your previous thread and shared in SM.

1234hello · 19/06/2018 10:14

Cana I suppose unless there is CCTV or witness then they can’t tell the exact time of the accident so can’t prove phone use.

Speeding - ditto. I don’t know enough about forensics but I’m not aware you can prove dangerous driving purely from the physical state of a vehicle.

alreadytaken · 19/06/2018 10:15

it's mainly the drink and drugs - and I dont think I want to explain the others, might help other people evade justice.

9780 now - so still looking for more support

1234hello · 19/06/2018 10:28

You’ve got me paranoid now alreadytaken Grin

There is always the chance of witnesses and (private if not government) CCTV being there, even if there doesn’t appear obvious people and cameras around.

Furthermore forensics and car systems are getting more and more sophisticated by the day.
