I’m Disabled I also have to use straws. Tried the silicon ones but they are to wide like milk
Shake straws and I
Take in too much air, the steal ones keep hitting my teeth hate the texture.

Theresnonamesleft · 23/10/2017 22:53

Metal ones cause damage to teeth and gums.
Paper ones can be a choking hazard for biters/clampers as the break.
Silicone ones would have to be replaced on minimum a weekly basis because of damage.
The width of these other straws can be larger than a disposable one, for people who require them, taking in too much liquid can be a choking hazard.

Then how would this be managed in a hospital? Many patients are unable to hold a cup and need to sip and use a straw. Bring from home - how they going to get washed?

Islacornx · 23/10/2017 22:53

My DM is disabled and can’t eat or drink properly, using a straw is the only way she can actually have any form of liquid.
Yes there are alternatives to plastic straws, but as PP have mentioned they come with issues i.e paper ones get too wet and don’t serve their purpose correctly. There is definitely a place for plastic straws and I don’t think this petition has been thought through properly Hmm

Scholes34 · 23/10/2017 22:55

A lot of plastic straw use is avoidable and that's what we need to cut down on. Am also cutting down on use of cling film (I put a plate over my bread bowl over night last night whilst it was proving, where I would usually have used cling film). Cut down on disposable water bottles. And why does my four pack of baked beans need to be wrapped in plastic. The tills in a supermarket are sophisticated enough to be able to apply a discount for buying four cans without having to wrap them in plastic.

kali110 · 23/10/2017 22:56

Agree with others for the things listed above.

sunandmoonshine · 23/10/2017 22:57

Yeah, I won't be signing it.

sunandmoonshine · 23/10/2017 22:58

I have not bought straws, (plastic or otherwise,) in 10 years. So no, I won't be signing it.

BlueSapp · 23/10/2017 22:59

What a ridiculous idea.

Bubblebubblepop · 23/10/2017 22:59

Tbf the difference if healthy baked bodied people stopped using them would be huge

Bubblebubblepop · 23/10/2017 23:00

Able bodied, not baked

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 23/10/2017 23:00

They ought to be banned everywhere, not just in Tesco's.

Signed.

OkPedro · 23/10/2017 23:01

bubble Yum baked bodies 😂

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 23/10/2017 23:04

Why is it a ridiculous idea?

They are harmful and there are alternatives.

AlexanderHamilton · 23/10/2017 23:06

DH buys loads of straws in various different sizes for his work as a vocal coach. Paper ones just wouldn't do the job. Different sizes have different effects on the vocal tract.

Sparklingbrook · 23/10/2017 23:07

Why Tesco in particular?

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 23/10/2017 23:08

I don't understand why it's just targeting tescos instead of say the catering and hospitality industry where I imagine the majority of plastic straws are used.

I wouldn't sign anyway. As pp have said there is a place for them (have worked with a few people who wouldn't be able to safely use the replacements that have been mentioned).

CotswoldStrife · 23/10/2017 23:11

As I am old, we used to have paper straws when I w'kid and they were useless! No way do I want those back again Grin

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 23/10/2017 23:12

Would it not be better to be petitioning the likes of McDonalds, Starbucks, Costa etc who must get through more straws than Tesco.

BlueSapp · 23/10/2017 23:17

Not everything needs to be sidelined, there are other thing worse than straws, which are actually very useful

monkeywithacowface · 23/10/2017 23:19

I was wondering why tesco in particular? I agree would make more sense to target fast food places etc.

I don't disagree with the sentiment just won't sign because I don't understand why the focus on tesco (as much as I loathe the place!)

monkeywithacowface · 23/10/2017 23:24

Surely they should also then ban drinks cartons that come with a mini plastic straw too? Also like most change.org petitions the blurb is really badly written it makes me cringe a bit. If you really want to affect change and inspire people to sign then put together a well researched and well written argument.

Phantomoutforthechill · 23/10/2017 23:28

I've signed.

BadLad · 23/10/2017 23:33

That's a really good point cheese. I'm not actually sure what the alternatives are, as I just became interested in the petition after signing (I didn't start it). Would be very interested to know what else is out there to replace plastic straws.

Please sign this petition that I've given absolutely fuck all thought to and just blindly agreed like a sheep.

SophantToSuckYourBlooodMumsnet · 25/10/2017 17:09

We're just going to move this one over to petitions.

bakewellbride · 10/05/2022 10:54

Why just straws? Supermarket sell plastic everything, targeting something so small just seems pointless to me
