petition.parliament.uk/petitions/106539

Sorry, this website only lets U.K. residents sign!

Please sign, whenever I am out shopping and see foie gras, I feel sick!

I'm vegan and have problems with lots of animal rights issues, but things can only change one step at a time. Please sign this petition to make a difference! Smile

I'm fairly certain my DS had it for Christmas lunch at his (state-run) nursery in France spell99. They're having roast duck for lunch today [jealous emoticon]

BeccaMumsnet · 10/11/2015 14:24

Hi all - we're going to pop this over to Petitions.

MaidOfStars · 10/11/2015 14:39

I am vegetarian and think the practice of forcefeeding to make foie gras is disgusting. I (obviously) don't eat it and I boycott restaurants that serve it.

I'm not signing the petition though. I agree with goodnessgracious.

And before anyone jumps on me, I don't lecture people about eating it either. On their conscience, not mine Wink

MaidOfStars · 10/11/2015 14:40

I wonder if I can start a petition to get it on the school lunch menu

Having said I don't lecture, that would entice me to open my mouth Smile

WoodHeaven · 10/11/2015 14:45

Not signing that unless you also want to start by banning chicken and turkey too, unless it's at least free range, if not organically raised.
Oh and if you are also happy to ban mass produced milk.
All of those are absolutely horrible to the animals, more so than the duck/goose who have been fattened.

WoodHeaven · 10/11/2015 14:49

Oh and the mass produced eggs too.

I'm always amazed at how people scream about foie gras but accept things that are just as bad if not worse when it comes the eggs and milk etc...
And would probably be outraged if the price of a pint of milk was going up because you can't use mass production techniques for it anymore (same with eggs, chicken etc....)

Just asking out of interest but have you seen it sold in the UK?

Anywhere "up north " for example?

MaidOfStars · 10/11/2015 15:26

Anywhere "up north " for example?

What. The. Actual. Fuck?

Are you being really rude or am I overreacting?

JellyBaby26 · 10/11/2015 15:26

I don't think I have ever seen proper stuff sold here.

I care about animals, but I don't suppose I'm fussed about the ones that will end up on a plate.

Foie gras is bloody delicious!

TwistInMySobriety · 10/11/2015 15:50

fat, stupid and greedy humans

Au contraire. South-western France, where foie gras hails from, is renowned for its paradoxically healthy diet. French women don't get fat, remember?

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 10/11/2015 16:00

I'm neither stupid or greedy. I am rather fat though all the foie gras I eat

BuggersMuddle · 10/11/2015 16:21

MrsGray I can confirm that it's entirely possible to get foie gras in Scotland Hmm. We have restaurants here too and some of them have even diversified from turnips & oatmeal...

Not signed. I don't often eat it, but I find it hard to get excited about a high end delicacy far more animals suffer due to intensive farming practices used to produce cheap dairy.

Even if I did agree, I couldn't sign a petition containing junk science. I also don't think tortuous means what Ms Macdonald BSc Hons thinks it does

MaidOfStars · 10/11/2015 16:38

We have restaurants here too

Shock

Shut the door.

Grin
MrsGradyOldLady · 10/11/2015 18:07

Calm down I'm from Yorkshire myself!

I only asked because last year my Mum wanted some for Christmas and I had to order it online from France. I've genuinely never seen it for sale anywhere locally - except restaurants of course.

MaidOfStars · 10/11/2015 18:41

Apparently, you can buy it at Costco (Sheffield)? My local deli has it, I think (NW).

Manamanah · 10/11/2015 19:32

The fact that this thread has managed to turn from an attempt to get people to sign a petition into one about where to source fois gras in the north of England has really made me smile.

Branleuse · 10/11/2015 19:36

its no more cruel than a lot of meat farming practices. Why do we always get british petitions against foreign food, yet our own farming practices leave a lot to be desired.

By all means boycott foie gras (its gross anyway) but im not sure why anyone would pick on that specifically

kinkytoes · 10/11/2015 19:40

Wish you hadn't mentioned you're a vegan OP. It really puts people's backs up.

MaidOfStars · 10/11/2015 20:13

Wish you hadn't mentioned you're a vegan OP. It really puts people's backs up

Do other similar disclosures of ethical/philosophical stances also annoy?

I'm a Christian.
I'm an environmentalist.
And so on.

ClangerOnaComeDown · 10/11/2015 20:43

Unfortunately there is something about mentioning you're a vegan which turns people into crazy ass wierdos who try to poke holes in your diet/ethics.

Everything from 'I couldn't give up cheese' to 'naw you just want a Bacon buttie' and a whole range of bizarre outraged questions and comments.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 10/11/2015 20:53

It's nothing to do with saying you're a vegan and everything to do with trying to get people to sign stupid, badly done and nonsensical petitions. Rather obviously Hmm

kinkytoes · 10/11/2015 22:11

Every thread I've seen where the OP mentions they're a vegan, it's like a competition as to who can make themselves appear the least vegan! Like the sole aim of their response is to upset or offend the OP. I don't understand it. If you stated you were a christian or an environmentalist you would never get the same reactions.

Personally I respect veganism and I think it's a shame that it elicits this type of reaction.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 11/11/2015 10:58

I think you missed the point, its not just stating you are a vegan, its the rest that goes with it. It's "I'm a vegan and you should all stop eating foie gras", or "I'm a vegan because xy a z is cruel and you should all stop doing it too".

Nobody gives a fuck if youre a vegan. But the very fact youre telling us is generally a prelude to something else.

Branleuse · 11/11/2015 13:01

i dont have a problem with veganism. I think its worthy and a good thing to aim for. Still not signing the petition because whats the point. They dont even make foie gras in the UK, and I expect if you try and get foie gras banned in france, then theyd react with bemusement in the same way my french MIL reacted when I talked about free range eggs - " but......theyre just chickens???!!?"
