In May last year my son was on a P&O Ferry crossing from Calais to Dover. He went on deck for a cigarette and never returned. He was never found and there were no CCTV cameras on deck to show us what happened to him. They have CCTV cameras to protect the duty free but not to protect the passengers. We don't know if he fell, or jumped or was pushed. Please help us to change the law so that ferries must have closed circuit television on deck.

Marina, I signed this a while ago. I really hope this petition can get CCTV on board, there is really no reason why it shouldnt. In the grand scale it is such a small thing that could really make a difference. Im so sorry for your loss.

Thanks

Thanks Thank you for your lovely messages. Please keep spreading the word as we need this to go worldwide so they can't just ignore us. We all want to protect our families and we want to stop other people going through such pain and loss Thanks

Signed. Can't believe they don't have cameras on deck, such a small step could help grieving families immeasurably. If a small paper shop can afford to run and maintain CCTV systems it's hard to believe that bloody P&O think it's a cost too far. You can't put a price on closure.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your son Richard Thanks

I can't believe P&O are saying it's not cost effective to do this as the occurance is so rare. I am wondering if it's really to do with footage potentially being available in the event of a disaster or health & safety breach so to minimise their loss it's not in their interests to have cctv available?

It's about the only place left that doesn't have cameras monitoring our every move.
So sorry for your awful loss.

I am so sorry for your loss Marina, and absolutely shocked that CCTV isn't mandatory on the passenger decks.

saintlyjimjams · 15/02/2014 09:59

I signed this and shared a while ago (quite a few people signed).

My grandmother lost her 17 year old son overboard in 1970 from a cruise ship. It was his first voyage (he was crew). After his death she campaigned for (& achieved) a change in the law relating to the ways people were called on & off watch. I signed it in her memory - she would have supported you 100%.

Marina211 · 15/02/2014 10:07

Thank you everyone Thanks and thank you saintlyjimjams. It's a terrible thing to lose a child and your grandmother must have suffered as we do. It's not just passengers who get lost overboard, as you have shown. Quite a few sailors go missing too and the seamen's union would also like to see CCTV cameras on deck, so we're fighting for them as well as for everyone else who has loved ones Thanks

Have signed. Such a tragic loss.

Nerfmother · 15/02/2014 10:29

I will sign, going back up to the link in a minute. It's absolutely shocking: I had no idea that so many people vanish on cruises and ferries.
I am so sorry for the loss of your son.

I've signed this. I never knew there weren't CCTV cameras on passenger decks on P&O ferries.

We regularly cruise and I know for sure there are CCTV cameras on the open decks on the ship we regularly sail on. I can't think why there wouldn't be.
