"I'd not..." vs. "I hadn't..."

Two contractions for the same thing: "I had not considered..."

Opinions?

both grammatically correct, regional variation only

former more common in Scotland IME

ILikeLentils · 16/12/2009 10:15

I use them differently. I was brought up in NE with a strong Scottish influence which may explain 'I'd not" if Mrs B is right.

I can't quite put my finger on what I use when.

Bucharest · 16/12/2009 10:16

Both correst.
I would use the second. (East Midlander)

SantaIsMyLoveSlave · 16/12/2009 10:18

Both correct. They flow differently so I'd use whichever came naturally in a particular sentence, but probably "I hadn't" more than "I'd not".

OliviaMumsnet · 16/12/2009 10:19

ooh. I dunno.
Maybe "I'd not" when the emphasis is on the negative
and "I hadn't" when using as an auxiliary verb (if that's what I mean, brain has rusted since my last Latin exam)
i.e.
I hadn't considered defecting to Netmums
but
I'd not long come over from the darkside

saintnickelas · 16/12/2009 10:21

i can think of another reawson for the variation:
i would use both, but if i was trying to convey it was something that i had previously not considered, i would use "i'd not" but if it was something that i generally had not considered, then i'd use "i hadn't"

as in:

i'd not considered that until....

and

oh, i hadn't considered that.

okay, they sound like the same variation now i've put it in writing, but i know what i mean!!

waitingforbedtime · 16/12/2009 10:24

I would use them in totally the opposite way to saintnickelas

I'd not - emphasis on the not as in 'I'd not considered that.

I hadn't - emphasis on the hadn't for comparative use with but now I HAVE....

saintnickelas · 16/12/2009 10:26

oh, that's weird.

you do know, that now i'm going to be saying "i'd not considered" "i haven't considered" all day now till i decide which one fits which usage!

RamblingRosa · 21/12/2009 09:19

I use second. I agree both are correct and it's a regional variation (Northern/Scottish?)
