Pedants' corner

What do all you pedants do in RL?

I'm just idly wondering where all you pedants are in RL since I never seem to meet any pedants outside of MN . Am I right in thinking that there are quite a few proof readers and editors inhabiting pedants' corner? Any linguists or translators? I'm just being nosy really.

sweetestthing did you get a reply?

I'm a lawery policy wonk edity type. ie I take other people's work and turn it into stuff that makes sense. And is readable. I worked as a journalist for 3 years, with a most excellent editor who taught me how to write. And I did English grammar and Latin at school. And I'm a Virgo. And - just in case anyone complains - I think using and, at the beginning of a sentence, on a chat forum is ok.

Botbot · 27/03/2009 13:26

Editor. Don't think I've posted in pedants' corner for a while though.

[whispers] I'm a Virgo too.

SweetestThing · 28/03/2009 07:54

hatwoman, yes I did get a reply. Apparently I can rest assured that their marketing department has been informed.
:-D
I am a Virgo too......

TheKingAndI · 30/03/2009 17:33

Freelance editor and proofreader - and also a Virgo.

Quattrocento · 30/03/2009 17:42

I was born a pedant. My parents were ashamed of me. I subsequently followed my natural inclinations and became a lawyer.

Quattrocento · 30/03/2009 17:50

for RG, definition of a participle

I should add that my claim to shame fame as a pedant was that I marched the manager of my local supermarket up and down his aisles showing him examples of apostrophe abuse. For which I received a voucher.

SweetestThing · 31/03/2009 22:37

Well done, Quattrocento!!

Biccy · 31/03/2009 23:00

Do I qualify as a pedant for pointing out to DP's old firm the mistake on the strap line embroidered on their uniforms? They had 50 odd shirts that said "XYZ Ltd. Central heating at it's best." They replaced them.

BitOfFunnyBunny · 31/03/2009 23:14

Winebeforepearls, may I place an order for that uniform?

ScottishThistle · 31/03/2009 23:30

Hello all! Oh, I finally found my home!

Born to be a pedant. Drives a friend of mine utterly crazy, spelling is my passion!

FairyCCTaleEnding · 31/03/2009 23:35

Part-time writer and editor, full-time pedant since birth.

I don't carry a black marker, though (must rectify). Chalk is handy for greengrocers!

Jackbunnysmama · 31/03/2009 23:51

We sit around and read the dictionary and theaurus on a full-time basis. What did you think we do??

FairyCCTaleEnding · 01/04/2009 09:34

Actually, we don't need to read dictionaries and thesauri (!) because it's just there, in the blood, every cell and nerve shuddering as we walk past pubs and greengrocers, or read an email from a teenager

TheOldestCat · 01/04/2009 09:36

Like hatwoman, I translate policy writing into plain English. I enjoy making my pedantry earn money!

midnightexpress · 01/04/2009 11:02

Actually jackbunnysmama, that is what I do for a living . I'm a freelance dictionary editor/project manager.

Jackbunnysmama · 01/04/2009 16:09

But it could be argued that we sit around reading dictionaries and thesauri because it's in our blood and every cell...

I've often thought that I would enjoy being a professional editor. Or perhaps a librarian. Reading for a living??? Bliss. However, then I considered that as an editor, I'd have to do something about all the atrocious spelling, plot inconsistencies and inaccuracies, rather than shut my eyes, grimace and read on... DH says I'm hell on wheels to watch medical/ forensic shows with, as I get too aggravated at inaccuracies. It must not be easy living with a pedant...
