Pedants' corner

What do all you pedants do in RL?

I'm just idly wondering where all you pedants are in RL since I never seem to meet any pedants outside of MN . Am I right in thinking that there are quite a few proof readers and editors inhabiting pedants' corner? Any linguists or translators? I'm just being nosy really.

I work for a regulatory body and we have our own set of rules for letter writing etc.
However, I have been an apostrophe fiend since early secondary school.

Habbibu · 16/03/2009 14:05

Some would say I'm the anti-pedant! I no longer do language for a living, but I've got a PhD in English Language, and used to work on the history of English... Mostly I don't miss it, but just lately I've been enjoying debating it (and pissing off all the pedants in the process)

RamblingRosa · 16/03/2009 14:06

Yes, I have memories of being accused of pedantry at a very young age too

I am the daughter of a pedant

Babbity · 16/03/2009 14:08

I work in the NHS. I know pedants from all walks of life.

doggiesayswoof · 16/03/2009 14:08

I am always the one asked to proof read documents at work, but it's an unofficial role - which I relish

RamblingRosa · 16/03/2009 14:09

Why don't I know any fellow pedants? I'm clearly moving in the wrong circles!

Doggie, I'm secretly offended if someone else is asked to proof read something

KiwiKat · 16/03/2009 14:13

RamblingRosa, I'm offended too! How very dare they ...

vonsudenfed · 16/03/2009 14:21

daughter of pedant, married fellow pedant, live very happily together.

My job does involve a fair amount of writing, but pedantry isn't a qualification really.

doggiesayswoof · 16/03/2009 14:22

Rambling and Kiwi, so am I. Don't they know who I am?

Hobnobfanatic · 16/03/2009 14:31

Former English teacher, turned writer, editor and proofreader.

Getting paid for pedantry is cool!

girlandboy · 16/03/2009 14:33

Libary assistant.

I have instant access to a dictionary, thesaurus etc.

fircone · 16/03/2009 14:34

Used to get paid for pedantry, but now I wander round sadly shaking my fist at "Three items or less" signs in the supermarket.

RamblingRosa · 16/03/2009 14:36

I think I'd like to get paid for pedantry. I'm in the wrong job. How did you get into editing and proof-reading HobNob?

OP posts:
girlandboy · 16/03/2009 14:38

I did a distance learning course that covered proof reading and editing.

vonsudenfed · 16/03/2009 14:46

Do you think we could form a crack team of freelance pedants?

We'd come into your office like a horde of locusts and strip it of any useless apostrophes, misusage and general redundant verbiage. You'd be a leaner, meaner clearer-speaking place afterwards...

RamblingRosa · 16/03/2009 14:48

Where can I sign up to join the crack team?

I'm a lawyer. Born to be a pedant. Speaking of which would you correct your ds's reception teacher who insists on writing 'independant' on his work?

squeaver · 16/03/2009 14:52

Bit of this, bit of that. Most of it involves writing. I think you're born to be a pedant.

HensMum · 16/03/2009 14:54

I work in publishing, but not editorial. To be honest, I wouldn't want the responsibility of being a proofreader or copy editor. Much more fun to point out other people's mistakes! I am a lazy pedant.

Hobnobfanatic · 16/03/2009 15:36

MollieO - I'd have to correct it! I sat on my hands for two hours before finally changing my LO's 'spelling practise' exercise book! The irony was too much for me to bear!

MoshiMoshi · 16/03/2009 17:22

Lawyer. Looking for somewhere in the virutal world to vent while I gestate [with] baby number 4...

MoshiMoshi · 16/03/2009 17:23

Clearly being pregnant has affected my ability to spell "virtual". Either that or my typing has goen toe potte.

ShowOfHands · 16/03/2009 17:24

I'm a SAHP but used to be a professional librarian.
