What is this?

§

It's on the top-right of my keyboard, sharing a key with the plus-minus sign.

§§§§§§§§§§§§

I haven't a clue what it's for. Anyone know?

And the cats ears are actually 'to the power of' so 2^2 is 2squared or for those who are feeling smart 4 .

HeadFairy · 16/12/2008 16:58

oh thanks notevenamousie

AdvocaatSlubberdegullion · 16/12/2008 17:57

~ this here is a tilde. lapin told me.

¬ I do not know what this is called but MrsBadger told me it is used in printing.

I know nothing else apart from # is an abbreviation in medical spk for a fracture.

PortAndStilton · 16/12/2008 18:01

¬ means line break

I have actually used section signs for real. You may all form an orderly queue to touch the hem of my robe...

Donk · 16/12/2008 21:01

~ in maths means 'of the order of' - i.e within a factor of 10.

ZoeC · 17/12/2008 10:08

I've generally come across as meaning 'number'.

georgiemum · 17/12/2008 10:12

Looks mathematical to me...

NotQuiteCockney · 17/12/2008 10:16

is hash sign, or 'octothorpe'. It can mean number.

| is a pipe, it's used a lot in scripting ... um ... in computer things. (tbh, people not knowing what it's for is like not knowing what ! is for, to me)

NotQuiteCockney · 17/12/2008 10:20

I can't find any explanation online about ¬. I think we may just be imagining it.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/12/2008 10:22

OMG. ¬ is 'not'.

I can't believe I forgot that.

I'm going to go hide under my bed.

EachPeachPearMum · 18/12/2008 21:42

What is '±' this for please?

EachPeachPearMum · 18/12/2008 21:44

All I know is it looks like Kanji for earth, but I cannot understand why it would be in the top corner of my keyboard (above §- which I always thought meant 'paragraph' for some reason)

NotQuiteCockney · 19/12/2008 07:14

It means 'plus or minus'. So, say, in market research results, you say that all results are ± 0.5%.

EachPeachPearMum · 19/12/2008 13:07

Ah- thanks!

prettybutterfly · 19/12/2008 17:11

What about this little chap " ¦ " ?
Anyone know?

prettybutterfly · 19/12/2008 17:12

Might be good for
