Pedants' corner

I am a mean, uncharitable person.

But, really...

It's "lose", dudes. It's "lose".

If I see one more thread/post about "loosing weight" or "loosing a job", I'm going to blow a blood vessel in my eye. All I can think when I read them is either, "Yeah. Get loose, babies. Shake it on down. Get jiggy with it", or, "Loosen the bonds. Release the hounds."

Help me, pedants. I know I shouldn't care. It's an internet forum, not a spelling contest...

Clearly I do not have enough in life to worry about.

Sigh.

Oh yes, I'm with you on this one. Drives me demented. Mind you, "cancel" for "council" is today's squesky-chalk-on-blackboard.

TackyChristmasLights · 13/12/2008 13:11

mmmmm and relax

FabioTheLiterateCat · 13/12/2008 13:12

Some peeple is just fick innnit.

Penthesileia · 13/12/2008 13:17

Sad, but true, Fabio. Not everyone can be as literate as you.

Have you listened to the Mitchell and Webb radio sketch "Looser"?

Penthesileia · 13/12/2008 13:20

No, PortAndStilton... Will it just feed my madness, though?

TinselianAstra · 13/12/2008 13:20

Can I be reassured that I was not the only one to think maybe the 'cancel' should pay for the child's transport to a private school, if only so that he would grow up to have better spelling than his parents?

Unfortunately it was a drama school.

I am such a bitch. I hope no-one does a search on my name to check how annoying I am...

UnquietDad · 13/12/2008 13:22

I'm glad I'm not the only one to think that if people want to send their children to snobby schools they should at least be able to spell.

That goes for all those who want their children to go to "grammer" schools as well. Aaaagh!! HOW HARD is it to get right?!

PortAndStilton · 13/12/2008 13:33

No, it's very funny (in a dark and sick way). It's available as a bittorrent if you are sufficiently geeky and don't have ethical objections, or the CD (Series 3) is very reasonably priced...

Quattrocento · 13/12/2008 13:34

?? my head hurts.

InSearchOfLostKeys · 13/12/2008 13:49

Ooh yes, 'loose' for 'lose' has me biting the keyboard. Also people sometimes 'weight' themselves instead of 'weigh' themselves (which actually sounds quite painful).

Have noticed a lot of 'rediculous' for 'ridiculous' on mn recently.

Oh, I'd better stop now, there are too many to mention...

Thought that 'cancel' thing had to be a wind up!

P.s If you think it's bad on mn, don't dare venture on to a certain website with the same initials as MN but reversed, you'll never recover I still have nightmares.

alexpolismum · 15/12/2008 20:40

Can I just add 'definate' and 'indipendant' to the list? I find them really annoying, especially 'definate'.

And when you see 'there' used in place of 'their' dpesn't it just make you cringe?

squeaver · 15/12/2008 20:44

And it's "hear hear" NOT "here here".

alexpolismum · 15/12/2008 20:47

oops, I mean doesn't, obviously!

alexpolismum · 15/12/2008 20:53

I had to come back and add 'would of/ should of'!

Grrrr!

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 15/12/2008 20:57

ahh but weight could easily be a slip of the fingers adding the extra letter .

everGreensleeves · 15/12/2008 21:01

and "a lot" is two words

biskybat · 15/12/2008 21:03

I definitely can't stand definately either, but thought that 'cancel' was deliberate on the op's part to get across her accent (cockney)

WalkingInAWonderStuffingLand · 15/12/2008 21:16

PMSL at the idea that children should only go to snobby/grammar schools if their parents can spell. I find definite difficult and missed an apostrophe in a thread title this week
I am glad that Mozilla now has a spell check, does make life easier. At least there isn't too much text speak on mn. That really winds me up.

Jux · 15/12/2008 21:21

I am really fed up with being 'lead' to something as well.

And to add insult to injury, in the last couple of years dh (who is a greater pedant than I!) has started saying 'reckernise'. At least he spells it right. God knows why he's started that one.

Quattrocento · 15/12/2008 22:15

I need to seek refuge in pedants' corner. Tonight someone has a "hate on Alexandra".

WalkingInAWonderStuffingLand · 17/12/2008 12:07

I've been up at night thinking about the whole loose/lose thing and the problem is it just doesn't make sense, its a stupid, stupid word, it should be spelt loose or louse or luse, spelt lose it should be pronounced lOse iyswm, I bloody hate words that don't make sense, why is it spelt like that??? WHY?
[goes off to get a life/ finish reading really dull data report]

alexpolismum · 17/12/2008 15:19

if we are talking about pronunciation and silly spellings, how about ough in

bough

bought

rough

through

cough

Jux · 17/12/2008 22:44

Does anyone remember the George Bernard Shaw take on English spelling? It was how you could spell "fish" - phough, or something.

Panta · 17/12/2008 23:40

You really are getting P.'s Corner a bad name with this one. It isn't pedantic at all. Just simple stuff. Let's not lower the bar, eh?
