When did this mangled nonsense begin?

OP posts:
Buscobel · 07/08/2026 09:07

Some time ago. Together with ‘reach out to myself’ and other atrocities.

EveryoneIsPointingNow · 07/08/2026 09:19

I suspect it's a cross between people not knowing whether they should say me or I and liking the sound of their own voice so an extra syllable is a Brucie bonus.

Seymour5 · 07/08/2026 12:44

Hyacinth Bucket syndrome.🙄

People also start a sentence with the word me. It really is “mangled nonsense” @Roundthemaypole

Me is the centre of the universe.

Definitely!! It’s all about “my rights” but never my responsibilities!!

Behold… someone trying to sound much cleverer than they are.

Aluna · 07/08/2026 13:27

It’s one of my MN bêtes noires. Along with “Sat here in tears”.

And let's face it, nobody should ever "reach out" to anybody unless they are one of the Four Tops.

If you are hanging on for “dear life” you should probably try and “reach out” for something or someone!!

I suppose that could be one instance, should I have a hand free. Otherwise, just calling, or talking to someone is probably a better option 🤣

Morepositivemum · 07/08/2026 14:34

I say it!🙈 it’s because I never know whether to say my husband and I or me and my husband 🙈🙈🙈 (hangs head in shame)

Just miss out the other person in the sentence.

Me and my husband are going to the shops / Me is going to the shops.

Can you deliver the sofa to my husband and I / Can you deliver the sofa to I.

Myself is reflexive - I treated myself to a new handbag.

You use “I” if you’re the one acting and “me” when an action is done to you.

BeanNaGealai · 07/08/2026 14:51

It depends on your dialect. In hiberno english myself/yourself/herself/himself is used in a more informal way. But it is pronounced a bit differently. It's more mehself rather than myself. You might be more likely to say mehself and himself than myself and my husband.

A lot of these usages come from the Irish language and its grammatical structures.

Never standing or lying down in tears!!

It would be “stood” or “laying” down 😂

We’ve both messed up!! It’s “lying” if you recline on a bed. It’s “laying” if you place an object down. 🤣

It's whatever is right if you don't have the other person in the sentence -

My husband and I went to the park - minus husband = I went to the park - correct

Me and my husband went to the park - minus husband = me went to the park - incorrect

Myself can get in the bin, ridiculous word used in this instance universally by people who think they're smarter than you but in actual fact prove their ignorance the second they open their mouth.

I was laying down and my husband said to myself: “I am stood here like a lemon while you read MN”.
