When did this mangled nonsense begin?

I was laying down and my husband said to myself: “I am stood here like a lemon while you read MN”.

🤣🤣

It’s one of my MN bêtes noires. Along with “Sat here in tears”.

I can’t say bêtes noires. It comes out as pet noir. Thank you, Victoria Wood.

Aluna · 07/08/2026 15:37

Pet noir - I’m going to use that!

Pet noir - I’m going to use that!

Especially apt if you have a black Labrador.

Joan Armatrading covered all options just to be sure

PleasantPedant · 07/08/2026 16:12

@Morepositivemum , Don't you mean 'Myself says it!'?

I never know whether to say my husband and I or me and my husband
Again 'Myself never knows...'

What are yourself like?

I really want that laughing emoji! 😄

Just miss out the other person in the sentence.

Me and my husband are going to the shops / Me is going to the shops.

Can you deliver the sofa to my husband and I / Can you deliver the sofa to I.

Myself is reflexive - I treated myself to a new handbag.

Why have you given two examples of incorrect usage? Am I missing something here?

PleasantPedant · 13/08/2026 11:12

@Dovesono , I think they're meant to show why they are wrong.

HoppityBun · 13/08/2026 11:16

True. But as others have said, I also can’t stand “me and my husband went / want / can’t agree” etc.

We’ve both messed up!! It’s “lying” if you recline on a bed. It’s “laying” if you place an object down. 🤣

It’s “laying” if you’re a hen

That's covered in the example (Me and my husband are going to the shops / Me is going to the shops.)

It's simple: List the other person first and add 'and [I/me/myself] ' depending on the sentence.

My husband and I went to the shops.
That happened to my husband and me.

She is going to Lisbon. Henry is going to Lisbon. Ergo(!!) She and Henry are going to Lisbon. It's the same lesson as the I/me/myself one. Think how you say it when there's only one person and then put them together.

A retired teacher friend said, "Him and her are going to wherever" and I just kept my mouth shut, but I can get it out here.😀

@Dovesono , I think they're meant to show why they are wrong.

I thought that initially, but then the third example is correct so I was confused!

Thank you. But I did know that. You are preaching to the converted.

I heard someone on a TV show last night say that "a letter was received by my husband and I".
