Bare with me again

Bare with me. Do you really want us to strip off?

And a new one. Highering. Saw this yesterday, twice, so don’t think it’s a typo. Sorry, but they wouldn’t be hired if I was recruiting.

OP posts:

"I can't bare it" is in a thread title right now.

Have also seen on MN in the last few days: "whither away." Which would be okay - though archaic - if it had a question mark and was intended to mean "Where are you going?"

EveryoneIsPointingNow · 06/08/2026 11:40

Yesterday someone stated emphatically that it was a higher car that had done the damage. The accompanying photograph showed that the offending car was the same height as the damaged one. There was only one conclusion left to make 😑

ClaudiaNaughton · 06/08/2026 14:54

Anyone noticed something/someone “on the floor” when outside? The car hit him and he’s on the floor.

Highering.

I could not fathom what that meant initially - something to do with Scottish, post 16, examinations? I understand now.

I particularly like 'Here, here', often seen on Facebook, when one poster wholeheartedly agrees with another. I usually post 'Where, where?' then dash. Hopefully it's constructive...

I have to say I have never been sure about hear hear/ here here as both would make sense.
i hear you or I am here for this?

6ate9 · 06/08/2026 15:25

I can’t bear it when people write myself instead of I or me.

I am currently dealing with a staff member's "puncher" on a hire car. I was initially concerned that he had somehow managed to get into a fist fight with the hire company staff, but no.......merely a flat tyre.

My boss is an avid reader and a very intelligent woman. She keeps referring to large or heavy-going books that she's reading as tombs - and I don't know whether to correct her. I probably shouldn't, should I?

You definitely should correct her. How else will she learn!!

RaraRachael · 06/08/2026 15:41

Unfortunately it seems to be more common to see "Bare with me" then "Bear" nowadays.

PinkTonic · 06/08/2026 15:42

one of my favourites was being told by a mid senior person that they were introducing more rigger into a process

also can’t count the number of times I’ve been told someone isn’t adverse to something

This is where I'm conflicted - on one hand I think she has to learn, but on the other I think she is my boss and it's difficult to correct something so basic as this without sounding like I'm making fun of her. Decisions, decisions...

I do “Where, where?” followed by

“Ah, there, there!”

MeMyselfAndIris · 06/08/2026 17:49

We have a cupboard at work with a helpful sign stating it is not moving. No idea what’s in it.

Minasama · 06/08/2026 17:51

I didn’t know what you meant by “highering.”

I recently saw “peak” used instead of “peek” in The Economist, no less. Things really are getting bad.

All of that said, I used to work for an engineering company, and I will take a few spelling mistakes from someone who is getting stuff done. My scientific calculations aren’t up to much either. But when your entire job is writing/journalism/communications it is not acceptable.

I can understand your dilemma!! Could you casually drop the correct word into a conversation? 🤣

I tried this with a team member who kept saying things were mute. It just didn’t land no matter how often I worked moot into a sentence

It took me a while to sort out highering, too.

I have tried, but I have a sneaky feeling she thinks I've got it wrong and is too polite to point out my mistake!

The trouble is it confuses you. I actually googled “bear” or “bare” the other day because I was sure it was bear but questioned myself as i’ve seen bare so many times.
Predictive text also causes problems.

I am particularly fond of a post from here a while ago that made the mistake in the opposite direction. The poster in question had bear legs. It still makes me smile.

There was a printed banner outside a travel agent near me (part of a large chain so no excuse really) that said “please bare with us during the building work”. It was up for weeks 🙄
