Spell Michael properly!

I'm so TIRED of seeing Michael Jackson written as Micheal. "Heal' is pronounced 'heel', so obviously it's wrong. If you're unsure, just look it up FFS. (Can't hold it in any more. I've come on here for a therapeutic moan!)

Ha ha, love total new level unlocked! She is Keeva and HATES Queeva and she speaks the language too! I call her Keeves.

People can’t get my name right
I sign my (named) email as Danielle, I get back Daniel
i introduce myself as Danielle, I get Daniel
i am not male!

Came here to say this too as my friend Caoimhe and I had this exact conversation last week! But I don't think other people should find offence on behalf of others - if it's their name, it's for them to feel one way or another about. Why would you insert yourself into the argument?

I say this as a Welsh woman who has a five letter name that people regularly get wrong. It's FIVE letters! And it's not short for anything! But I wouldn't expect people to get cross on my behalf. In an email do I give a monkey's? Not really. But on a certificate or on my bank card - of course! My baby bracelet from hospital was spelled incorrectly too... and I was born in Wales!!

I have also met Micheals in my life...

Edited

The vicar spelled my name wrong on our marriage certificate! I pointed it out when we were signing the register after the ceremony, so I have a certificate with the relevant letter crossed out, corrected and initialled by him!

That's actually really relevant to me too! I was a witness for Caoimhe's wedding and my name was misspelt as the witness and I had to initial all manner of nonsense to make it legal! I mean... FIVE letters! Come on! I had to show you my passport!!

ETA: Love the name Maude, that was my auntie and I know your reference, but it always puts a smile on my face. We had the same birthday too.

I’ve seen people named Micheal and it always makes me wonder if their parents just didn’t know how to spell the name correctly!

Micheal is the Irish version of Michael. It is pronounced Meehall. There’s a QVC presenter called Micheal.

And Isreal for Israel. That’s bloody annoying, too!

That’s how Americans even pronounce it!

Cutchemist · 19/05/2026 17:50

Michael Jackson is spelled paedophile

I used to know a Rachael. Her own parents were never sure which way round the a and e went.

I am a Rachael, i never struggled with which way round the A and E went, neither did my parents even my severely dyslexic brother got that hang of it but to schools, workplaces and everyone else it appears to be the hardest thing in the world and being spelled Racheal drives me mad.

But it has a fada in Irish.

We knew someone who's son had a very odd spelling of his name, turned out she was dyslexic and her own name also had an odd spelling because her mum was dyslexic.

Son had a teacher with a very solidly English surname and strong accent. He was a Michel not a Michael. It didn't suit him.

PleasantPedant · 22/05/2026 10:25

The -el ending or El- beginning in names from the Bible refers to God.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 22/05/2026 10:53

It's one of my names, so I get people spelling it wrong all the time. It's really not the end of the world, especially when it's not even your own name you're getting irate about!

PleasantPedant · 22/05/2026 11:25

@VimesandhisCardboardBoots , you're in Pedants' corner. I can't get too worked up about it either, but it's not my name.
Misspellings of my name annoy me because they happen when the spelling matters. They're usually of the Ms Peasant Pendant variety and in an admin context.

Michael is easy to remember. It's alphabetical.

Likewise Reuben. Not Rueben

Like ABC? As easy as 123 I would suggest.

HesterLee · 22/05/2026 11:33

A friend got married in a Church of St Michael - it was spelt Micheal on the order of service. Don't think she ever realised.

Berlinlover · 22/05/2026 11:34

CmonBobby · 18/05/2026 16:25

Micheal is the Irish way to spell it (and AFAIK it’s pronounced Mi-harl with a guttural consonant. Although I agree this doesn’t apply to MJ.

It’s pronounced nothing like Mi-harl.

My husbands name is spelt Micheal as it’s the Irish spelling and it always gets corrected which is fairly annoying as even if you fill out a form correctly you have to send it back otherwise the name won’t match. On any important paperwork such as registry office there is always a note that it is spelt correctly

Yeah, I came in from trending and didn't realise where I was. I shall leave you all to your pedantry!

Really? I know one and that’s how he says it.
He is from Limerick if that makes a difference.

This is the Irish spelling - pronounced Mee-hall

Seeingadistance · 22/05/2026 12:36

There’s a Michael in my family and his name is regularly spelled Micheal. It’s laziness and a lack of care and attention to detail. And it does annoy Michael.

Yes. I have taught children called Micheal and had to remember to spell it that way.

Edit: not Irish BTW.

I know someone who deliberately chose the (incorrect) spelling Pheobe instead of Phoebe for her daughter 🤯.

OriginalPedant · 22/05/2026 12:42

I have an Irish in law named Micéal. He goes by Michael nowadays as he was teased at school (over it sounding like a donkey’s call).

houseofchaosandclothes · 22/05/2026 12:43

Just to clarify it is not the Irish spelling of Michael - it’s a totally different Irish name that is pronounced differently. It’s like saying Seamus is the Irish for James. A bit different as they obviously have the same biblical origin but a Mícheal would not answer to the pronunciation of Michael.
