That's the approximate number of rogue 'of's I have seen on Mumsnet posts today alone. 'Should of', 'would of', even an 'I of' somewhere. It is spread by repetition. Should we counter by correcting every instance we can, and enforce the correct use of 'have' by repetition?

Incidentally, my title is an old crossword clue. Do solve it if you like.

YABU: no, we should leave the 'of' people unchallenged;
YANBU: yes, let's have a campaign to correct each and every instance of the error.

It’s mumsnet ffs their not sitting an English language exam. Think some people need to get a life.🤔🙄

*they’re

AgnesMcDoo · 21/02/2026 23:38

It’s web chat not an English exam.

LaMarschallin · 21/02/2026 23:40

I'd use the same English here as I would in an exam. Why would anybody use different SPAG depending on where they're using it?

MO0N · 21/02/2026 23:34

Sometimes people are typing as they speak, ie in dialect.
But when you see things like 'hare's breath away from death' it's got to be didn't pay attention at school/never read a book issue- surely?!

Well, if a fox or dog were chasing it...? 🤔

5arahM · 21/02/2026 23:41

Get a life and stop picking on people who don't know any better.

We don't need to alienate and shame disadvantaged people for their poor spelling and grammar, of which they're probably already painfully aware.

I think it's generally better to quietly lead by example - show how you write well - rather than bullying other women over their substandard writing skills.

Let's not make grammar a hill to die on - especially not when someone is dealing with tough stuff, sharing their story, or seeking advice.

Mumsnet shouldn't be as toxic and "Shame on you!" as it is. And yet it is. A high horse rodeo.

If you're smart enough to write genuinely well, you already know all of that.

“I think it's generally better to quietly lead by example - show how you write well - rather than bullying other women over their substandard writing skills.”

That’s all very well but I see incorrect versions as much as correct ones on the internet. People who don’t know which one's right won’t be able to tell. Is it really bullying to say “by the way it’s should have”?

Poptartz · 21/02/2026 23:47

The judgement 🙄
dyslexia op?
I think different areas/accents pronunciation comes across particularly when typing a short message.
I can write an essay in a very different way to a text message for example!
I will own it, I cannot remember everything I learnt at school.

Not irony, satire. Which you missed.

Very true, could be moving poetry about the dying moments of a hunted leporine😥.

I hate "off of" as in "him off of the telly". But I can't be bothered to correct every error.

I know you speak for some people, but some of my friends make plenty of errors and none of them are disadvantaged in any traditional way.

A couple of them ask me to proof read important things before they send them, but they're not cowering with shame as people tend to imply on these threads.

Freya1542 · 21/02/2026 23:51

As did you with yours. Threads that focus on bitching about others are generally popular.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 21/02/2026 23:53

Most I can let slide, but not this one...

Many a time on local social media pages I've seen posts where people write "bin looking for a set of Chester draws"

Come on now.

Incandescentangel · 21/02/2026 23:54

At Least correct the whole sentence! Though I think perhaps the writer was being ironic…

I like the idea of a fudge state, it describes something quite well
