That's the approximate number of rogue 'of's I have seen on Mumsnet posts today alone. 'Should of', 'would of', even an 'I of' somewhere. It is spread by repetition. Should we counter by correcting every instance we can, and enforce the correct use of 'have' by repetition?

Incidentally, my title is an old crossword clue. Do solve it if you like.

YABU: no, we should leave the 'of' people unchallenged;
YANBU: yes, let's have a campaign to correct each and every instance of the error.

I don’t mind it; it’s the oral version of should’ve.

What I can’t stand is ‘reaching out’ instead of ‘asking’.

I’m still trying to work out the Brickbiscuit clue,

😆

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 21/02/2026 21:26

BTW everyone:

It's "with regard to" and "in regard to".

"With regards to" suggests you're sending greetings and "in regards to" suggests your grammar is extremely poor.

Thanks!

Sorry.
I missed your earlier post cos I type slowly.

had to step away for an hour or two because while "wanna" drives me bonkers, the "gunna" i saw sent me into some kind of fuge state

Fugue state 👍 😉

Alainlechat · 21/02/2026 21:27

Pretty sure “try and see” is also ok to use. Certainly more correct than should of?

My husband and I were talking about it earlier. It was an attempt at humour.

I got it!

lifeisgoodrightnow · 21/02/2026 21:27

brought a house brought a car - aargh

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 21/02/2026 21:27

What I can’t stand is ‘reaching out’ instead of ‘asking’.

Yes, this is frightful.
When did this become common parlance?

Unforgettablefire · 21/02/2026 21:29

No. Because not everyone is perfect.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 21/02/2026 21:29

Oftentimes it’s annoying…

Funnywonder · 21/02/2026 21:31

I annoys me too, but YABU for not posting this in Pedants’ Corner where it belongs.

I’m still trying to work out the Brickbiscuit clue,

The actual clue, as I really should have stated it, was:

Of of of of of of of of of of (10)

I don't think I got it first time, and had to wait for the solution next day. There are a couple of suggestions hinted at upthread, but they don't quite get there.

The incorrect use of myself and yourself is driving me crazy atm! It is EVERYWHERE!!

Leave people alone. You know what they're saying.

Eye no wot there c'esting but it hardly helps clear communication.

Yes, lets have a campaign to bully people off MN.

C'mon- bully? I'm not British and I'm actually thankful when someone points out a mistake I've made. As long as it's done nicely and not mockingly.

I have OFTEN (yey, I got it) noticed how people tend to mistake bought-brought and loose-lose which I don't really get. But then I have had to learn expressions as "taking the mickey" (thought it had to do with Mickey Mouse first) and "clamp my fanny shut" - laughed out loud when I got that one.

Oh, and something I love but I can't explain why, it's just so endearing when people use "me" instead of "my". Like me dad and I.. Don't know if it's just in certain parts of England it's used but it's adorable. Can't use it myself without feeling like an impostor though.

Ahhh, oftentimes when I'm solving crossword clues I find the number of letters most helpful

AWedgeOfLemonAndASmartAnswerForEverything · 21/02/2026 21:37

Most people are idiots. What will you achieve by educating them? You'll only make them as good as you, and lose your advantage.
