I am bias

Just seen this again in another thread. Why is bias the only noun that people are regularly failing to turn into an adjective?

Is it because similar ones have a different ending as a noun whereas bias only has something appended?

I've never seen anyone say I am amaze or I am disappoint but in those cases you have to change "ment" to "ed" which is harder to do than just forget to add "ed".

But then I've never seen anyone say I am surprise either and that works the same as bias.

He text me. Where in the shuddering hell did that come from?

Fingalscave · 09/01/2026 12:15

Bias for biased is my top hate of the moment. It's followed by tex/text instead of texted and breakfasses instead of breakfasts.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/01/2026 12:45

Ladies who lunch

Pedant5corner · 09/01/2026 15:15

Why is bias the only noun that people are regularly failing to turn into an adjective? It's not.
It is often used on baby name threads. 'Q: Arlo, Bear or Charlie?'
'A: Bear, but I am bias. My LO is Bear.'

dairydebris · 09/01/2026 15:18

Yes.

Along with: I am AD, DD is SEN, etc.

Hope I used colon correctly.

Aarrgh. Yes that is exactly how it appears.

It makes me think of a minor Greek God. I am Bias. Minor deity of misjudgement.

Mite bee myself but am astonish. (Might be me but I'm astonished.)

I can sort of see why the -ed gets left off text but not bias.

Pedant5corner · 09/01/2026 15:21

I give you 'I have mental health'.

So with biased the root is a noun, and you add -ed.
With amazed the root, amaze, is a verb - but bias can also be a verb ("these new girls bias the outcome because in previous classes only the boys studied engineering").
That may be what's causing confusion - they have heard bias in more contexts.

Text is fairly standard as an unchanging past tense like "bet" - it already has the xt sound at the end like "faxed" or "axed" so when people started using it as a past tense it became irregular because it's so much like those in its unchanged form.

”He sent me loads of texes”. I’ve heard that one recently.

Pedant5corner · 09/01/2026 15:52

@drspouse , bias is a noun. The verb is to bias.
The 'I am bias' isn't likely to have come from that confusion. The verb isn't used that much.

“I am Bias. This is my son, Bear. My husband is Bernard.”

Pricelessadvice · 09/01/2026 15:54

This drives me insane!

TallulahBetty · 09/01/2026 15:56

Drives me mad - also 'I am prejudice'.

I also hate 'chill' instead of 'chilled'.

Whosthetabbynow · 09/01/2026 15:57

Bloods. Didn’t it used to be blood test back in the day?

So "bias" is both the noun and the verb. Not too sure on your point here.

Whosthetabbynow · 09/01/2026 15:57

Bloods. Didn’t it used to be blood test back in the day?

Suspect that's from medical jargon - where there would also be "vitals", "gases" etc.

Piglet89 · 09/01/2026 16:06

@drspouseI think she means the verb must have “to” in front of it: the infinitive of the verb. It’s a pedantic point - but this is Pedants’ Corner.

Lollylavender · 09/01/2026 16:06

I am sat

I am bias

He text

These are all sooo annoying and wrong!!!

AngeloMysterioso · 09/01/2026 16:07

”I am so OCD about…”

Are you? Are you really the human manifestation of a debilitating mental health condition? Are you sure?

In the sentence "we bias the findings by including older men but not older women" there is no "to" and it is still a verb. It's just not in citation format.

DeQuin · 09/01/2026 16:08

No! I am bias!

Joolsin · 09/01/2026 16:09

"That's so cliché" - no it's not, it's so clichéd.

RaraRachael · 09/01/2026 16:14

I can't stand "I text her" when it should be "texted".

I've also seen "chill" a lot when it should be "chilled" like, "I'm having a nice chill day".

Just wrong

I saw a cracker on here recently- "I live in a terest house"
