I am bias

Just seen this again in another thread. Why is bias the only noun that people are regularly failing to turn into an adjective?

Is it because similar ones have a different ending as a noun whereas bias only has something appended?

I've never seen anyone say I am amaze or I am disappoint but in those cases you have to change "ment" to "ed" which is harder to do than just forget to add "ed".

But then I've never seen anyone say I am surprise either and that works the same as bias.

“I was taken back”. To where?

“I was taken back”. To where?

To my childhood home?
Or do they mean "I was taken aback when my neighbour answered the door in a PVC apron and nothing else"?

CreativeGreen · 09/01/2026 16:18

I don't know how to do accents on MN, but one I'm never sure about how to respond to is 'that's so cliche'. Because if they know it's French and are therefore not anglicizing to 'cliched' that's fine....but it's just I suspect most of the time, that's not the case.

Yes, they say taken back instead of taken aback. It’s everywhere!

“Some of the women at work are in a click”

No! I am bias!

I’m bias and so’s my wife!

EyeLevelStick · 09/01/2026 16:26

Your thread title set my teeth on edge before I realised it was pedants’ corner.

Close instead of closed minded is a similar error to bias.

FrightfulNightfull · 09/01/2026 16:27

I’m coming back with my current pet hate - “was we wrong to x, y. and z?”
And yes “I am bias” is dreadful.
I often read posts on MN with the “he could have called in sick” or whatever and I think to myself - does this poster REALLY manage people/have a highly paid stressful job as they claim. I can’t imagine being THEIR superior and thinking this was a great hire ..

Posts by teachers tend to have some glaring error in the spelling or grammar.

I haven’t noticed that one, but agree with pp re text instead of texted. I have noticed when some people are saying it, they say something that sounds like tex-te. It’s as if some part of their brain KNOWS there should be a ‘d’ there for past tense, but their mouth is unable to fully articulate it because they have never typed it. Something like that🤣 Drives me bonkers.

honeylulu · 09/01/2026 16:37

I've noticed "I am bias" too and I hate it.

Along with: I am AD, DD is SEN, etc.

Hope I used colon correctly.

I hate that so much but it’s absolutely everywhere. No, you’re not Autistic Spectrum Disorder are you!! Imagine!

"The school mums are really clicky."

Bloody hell the noise at the school gate must be annoying.

As a recently retired teacher, lots of younger teachers (including the HT) would run things past some of the older members of staff before they went out to pupils or parents.

Some of the errors were shocking..

"That's so cliché" - no it's not, it's so clichéd.

To be fair, cliché is both a noun and adjective in French, and given it’s an imported word it makes sense that it operates in both ways in English.

It’s interesting that bias/biased prejudice/prejudice seethe same problem. I wonder what sort of hyper/hypocorrection is at play with avoiding the “st” sound at the end.

Yes, have seen all of those. "First come first serve" is, for me, the second most annoying after I am bias.

To be fait, the posters probably have a poorer grasp of French than English.

Oh yes, totally - I just never know whether to judge or not if I suspect that someone's using 'cliche' in the same way as 'bias', if that makes sense.

(and I'm aware of the irony that I can't do accents here 😂)

I have blood pressure

Oh, Lordy.

These both drive me nuts, as does “There’s family dynamics”.

I work in healthcare care, and it gets trotted out every time there are strained family relationships. I feel like screaming “EVERYBODY has family dynamics”

Posts by teachers tend to have some glaring error in the spelling or grammar.

Posts by some teachers. Teachers of subjects like science, maths and PE don't always have impeccable SPaG. Nor do quite a few primary school teachers, unfortunately. Mind you, quite a lot of posts in Pedants' Corner contain glaring errors and sometimes even a complete misunderstanding of the very grammar point about which they are frothing!

Pedant5corner · 09/01/2026 17:26

@OttersMayHaveShifted , I said tend to have.

The posters may not be teachers in real life.

Some posts in Pedants' corner contain deliberate errors as an in-joke and there is Muphry's Law.
